It's all crap. It's not even Think of the Children (TM), it's just some senator looking to get some media attention that will be in the back of everyones mind at election time.

I won't even go into all the other things that generate more risk than your kid having a myspace page. It just hurts my head.

Isn't there at least one senator, somewhere, who will introduce some sort of "Responsibility in Parenting" act, which will say things like "It's your responsibility to teach your children not to put their full name, DOB, picture, address, physicals, schedule and phone number up on the internet for everyone to read. If someone uses it to get to your child, you are partially responsible for raising a STUPID CHILD."

I vote that the acronym for this particular act be: DARWIN

On another, slightly more serious note... how is it that MySpace is responsible for people putting their vital information up on teh intarwebs, but McDonalds isn't responsible for people getting unhealthy, sick, and dying-earlier-than-they-should from their food? (The "Cheeseburger Bill")

So, although I'm sure there's loopholes that will be pointed out... the basics of it is that I'm paying for the content. The CRIA is just giving it to me at a discount, because I'm doing the downloading and burning myself instead of them having to press a CD/DVD.

It's not piracy if I'm paying for it. And I'll happily buy a spindle of DVDs to support artists. ;)

Although I was being 60% funny, I was 40% serious. Unfortunately, while I can give you examples of people arrested both in the US and overseas, sent to an offshore, unmonitored "detention camp", tortured, degraded, and humiliated for years with no end in sight, or sent to 'friendly' countries that engage in torture that would make Guantanamo marines turn pale.... I'm afraid I can't give you any concrete examples of people executed. Mostly because no reports are allowed out from these 'secret prisons', and the people we send to 'friendly country' secret prisons are also not reported on... so while people have gone missing, and mysterious deaths have happened, the very people possibly responsible for those deaths have told us "Hey, it was an accident, everything is fine"... and we have no choice but to accept their word on it.

    Sorry to disappoint.

I guess that one could make the case that India's space program is an investment in the future, but I wouldn't want to be the one to try to sell that to people who don't have enough food.

You know, I was in the USA last year, and the poverty and malnutrition were heartbreaking. Millions of people with no health insurance, 1 in 10 citizens below the poverty line, hundreds of thousands of people living in the streets across the nation. As a long-time "one meal a day" guy who's trying to get out of that habit, it really depends. Currently I usually throw a few packets of instant oatmeal into my bag. For the rest of the day, a piece of fruit, some microwavable lunch or leftovers to reheat, and I'm set.I tried getting up early enough to cook something good, but as a poor sleeper, it just never really happened.

I wish slash had an ascii art translator, so I could make a picture of a gagging face as I think about having pop for breakfast. Ya'll are freaks. Lunch? Sure. Pick-me-up when you really need it? Why not. But breakfast? And what's with some of those quotes in TFA? "I get headaches if I don't drink it". Wow, there's a good sign. I'm sure nothing is wrong at all! "Keep Consuming!(tm)". Am I the only one who wonders if Coke has gone back to putting... coke... in their drinks?

Anyways, I digress. Now, if I don't have to be into work early, I'll stop by the greasy spoon up the street, and grab eggs and meat, with extra eggs and meat on the side. 4 or 5 eggs over hard, a double handful of sausage and bacon, tea and fruit juice... but no hash browns, I'm trying to watch my weight. ;)

On a related note, I'm about to switch over to a more socially-conscious breakfast. There's a fair-trade market a few blocks away, so I'll be making my own oatmeal with fair trade oats and dried fruit. Aside from being healthier, it's also a small step towards better karma. I'd encourage everyone who has the opportunity to "help out the little guy" when possible... get your lunch from the hot dog cart or the privately owned deli instead of McD's. Go hit a fair trade store for your goods. It isn't much, and it doesn't cost a whole lot more either... but it's usually healthier, and also usually better for people who really need your help. You don't have to change everything you do, just one thing is better than none.

Well the most intelligent use of a mass driver I have seen in SF (and envisioned real space projects) is to use a mass driver to send the product of moon or asteroid mining back to the earth. IIRC, it requires more than 100 times less energy to send something out of moon's gravity well than to send it out of earth's, so a shot of 100 tons of titanium a day could well make a moon mining facility profitable.

Yes, let's shoot 100 tonne chunks of rock at the earth, on systems undoubtedly made by the lowest bidder and maintained by a minimum wage space-monkey. I can't see anything at all that would go wrong with that.

What made DX great was that you could go about the same task multiple ways, and the coders made efforts to make this happen, and it was great. The first few times on the first level on DX I never even realized you could storm the front door and kill everyone... I always snuck around the back, jumped up the crates to the walkway, through the air duct, and into the top level, and then snipered my way down. It fit so well with my preferred method that I didnt even think about doing it a different way. One day, when hell freezes over and I work for BioWare, I'll make a game that shares that level of open-concept gameplay.
