I remember the original Ask Slashdot as well, and it was an amusing thread, in parts. I'm glad you came back to update us, not many people do. It's nice to see the thought process at work. I don't have enough books to worry about something like this (I have too good a memory, once I finish a book it's boring to read it again), but my beta version wife (aka girlfriend) is an avid collector... so I might score some points for passing on this idea.
Thanks, Ask Slashdot, for helping me get laid via a librarian question.
WTF is with you people? Ever since the Apple made iPhones "bricks", this erroneous use of the term has seeped into our technical vocabulary. Sheesh... way to brick the discussion... I'm stabbing you with my mind, right now. Can you feel it?
(and I will buy a plane ticket and come hunt down anyone who says I 'bricked his mind')
Thompson claims that the complaints violate state religious protections because his advocacy is motivated by his Christian faith.
That's right folks. You can be a douche, as long as you do it in the name of Christ. Jack Thompson confirms it. Douchebaggery == bad GodDouchery == good
I don't trust email at all, really. I mean, even if your end is secure, and the receiving end is secure, it still has to go through equipment that is either gov't owned, tapped, or "coerced into helping". That's why I've forgone email entirely, in favour of carrier pigeons. That's right folks, carrier pigeons. Used for centuries for quick, reliable communication across distance. And with advances in modern materials and technology, I can just strap a USB stick to their leg, and send them off. The gov't may have wiretaps and rubber hoses aplenty, but I'm quite certain they don't have people sitting out on rooftops with big nets, watching for pigeons. Security through obscurity, people!
However, thanks to Slashdot, I now recognize that STO isn't a foolproof method of protecting your data. With that in mind, I've started to randomize my data as well. Even if they found it, there's no way they could sort it out.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go throw another pigeon in the blender.
So, impeachment is proposed. Everyones going to vote against it. And then the REPUBLICANS, see a chance to embarrass the DEMOCRATS, and decide to vote for it. Because the DEMS would be shamed to express their views that the VP is a liar and a cheat. And then the DEMS, not wanting to admit their shame, bury this in committee. So the REPUB VP, a liar and a cheat, gets to keep lying and cheating. And even though there's a valid proposal to look into it, no-one is willing to.
Why wouldn't they just follow protocols used by ships in international waters? Because, then we'd have to send pirates into space. And peglegs and hooks rip through spacesuits.
I won't even go into the problems the ninjas will have...
Wow, I sure wish my company had a horrible reputation, so I could be a marketing droid who spent weeks writing up a longwinded guide on how to shop nicely at my store and then post it anonymously on the internet. I'm sure that would turn the reputation completely around, as well as net me that nice bonus trip to Florida.
Fun fact: What you write on a post card can't be used against you in a court of law.
Really? I suggest you write "I'm gonna fly a plane into the Sears Tower" on a postcard and see how much hilarity ensues. I'd be quite amused by the report, issued months later, entitled "$RANDOMLUSER determined to strike within the United States" In fact, I believe that's part of Bush's reelection plan...
The Red Cross are kind of jerks - they've harrassed game developers for putting red crosses on medical stuff and even sued the Red Cross pub in england. They lost that one due to the pub being 800 years old. Europe seems to have a habit of turning flags and symbols sideways to represent something new. I'm sure that would work here...
Hopefully, this is part of some backroom deal so Joss can secure the rights to Firefly (which expire at the end of this year).
Because, otherwise... Joss, buddy, what the hell? You're like a hooker who keeps going back to her abusive pimp for another shot. What's next, you'll add a secondary character for Nathan Fillion, just to ensure that Fox will cancel it?
I was around in the 90's when those bastard cheap hard drive companies decided to start measuring in base-10 instead of base-2. I complained bitterly at how crappy and cheap and market-speak it was. Now, 10 years later, something finally happens, but it's too late for anything to change, any money to realistically be returned, or for us to go back to the old, proper way. Ahhh, the sweet smell of justice....
I thought you Americans decided against that whole Aristocracy thing? Remember, democracy and all that jazz? How'd that go for you?
I think they were just afraid that he would he would make all the candidates look really dumb at the next debate. And also that he'd siphon votes from whoever it is that they've decided they want to win.
We were on Slashdot. And the CBC (canadian national television), both TV and radio, and CTV (the other national channel) news. And all 3 of the major provincial news shows. And in regional and national newspapers. And international media, international magazines, TV news in some US states, and even Finland, off of the top of my head.
I'm the first to agree that some "fan films" do get a little too much into themselves. But I think being covered in every media form in multiple countries before even being released is a pretty good measure of notability. Even if it's not CNN, yet.
After drawing international media attention (print, internet, and TV) for our upcoming Star Wars fan film, we decided to add a Wikipedia article. We're not Wiki experts, but we tried to do our best with our first attempt, making a short article on the film, the coverage it had received, notable points about it, and sent it in. It was tossed as not long or detailed enough... apparently a few paragraphs was too little. So, we tried again, writing a long and detailed article about how the movie came to be, what it was about, etc etc. Again, tossed. Non-notable. I tried explaining how we'd received broad media attention (including Slashdot), and if I recall right, was ignored because the movie hadn't been released yet, and as such was non notable.
We wouldn't have minded cleaning it up, changing it, adding more references, doing whatever was required... but instead we were hustled off. We have thousands of preorders, thousands of visitors to our site every month, and coverage all around the world, all before even being released, all for an unfunded fan film made mostly with blood and sweat...but, apparently, we're not noteworthy enough.
I've had other, similar Wiki experiences, but this was enough for me to call it a day. I still use WP frequently, mostly for obscure stuff, but it seems the editors have an iron fist over the place. As such, I'll avoid subjecting myself to that.
So, lemme get this straight... Comcast charges you to send bits and bytes. And they have a finite limit on how much you're allowed to send. And now they're engaging in an activity that actively makes you send MORE bits and bytes... thereby getting to your limit quicker, and/or letting them charge you more (I don't use Comcast, but I know some providers will charge you extra $$ for buying more blocks of bandwidth. Or maybe they just cut you off...)
So, sorry, I'm not versed on american law. How is this legal? "You can only use X amount of Y. But we're going to surreptitiously make you use more Y. And then we're going to get mad at you for going over X."
I don't live that far from Bioware Edmonton, and I was wondering why I faintly heard screaming and sobbing today. Seriously, Bioware prides itself on being a tight, self-sufficient, family office that makes great games. There was enough worry during the Pandemic merger that such qualities might be lost... they seemed to have come through fairly unscathed... and no the behemoth that is EA is going to come play in the sandbox? The bad news is that I sense a lot of soon-to-be-unhappy people at Bioware. The good news is that if they move on, maybe I can live the dream and work there:)
Hey, I figure ya gotta look at the bright side with everything:)
Looks like the Union is staffing IT security now. Who was doing it before, the Confederacy? Who do you think strung up all those first gen coloured iMacs?
They decided to dock him the vacation time instead of fining him $3 Mil, because they realized that if they fined him $3 Mil, the only way he could pay would be to steal confidential data and sell it off...
Move to Alberta, Canada. They (rightly) decided a few years ago that such predatory actions were discriminatory. All drivers are now charged the same, regardless of gender, and you get fixed discounts for each year you go accident-free. Several other Canadian provinces have, or are planning to, follow suit.
Charging men more for insurance is nothing but profiteering discrimination. But they can get away with it because it's MEN, and apparently it's still acceptable to have male stereotypes. But, imagine the outcry if they started charging women more because everyone knows women are bad drivers.
Since this has pretty much been your baby for the last 10 years, what are your own personal favourite moments watching Slashdot grow up? God this place is odd...
(and I will buy a plane ticket and come hunt down anyone who says I 'bricked his mind')
The government of Canada is preparing to attempt to bring...
Preparing to attempt to bring? Wooooahhh there Johnny Canuck, slow down! What's with all your preparing? What do you think this is, Star Trek?
+1 Awesome.
(I was going to give you +0.00015 awesome, but I must have screwed up the math somewhere....)
