  1. It's the weight game. on MS Patents IM Feature Used Since At Least 1996 · · Score: 2, Funny

Very simple, Microsoft gets patents on existing functionality or technology. If you use them, they go after you. Even if there is prior art, Microsoft can tie it up in court. Since Microsoft has a huge advantage in the money department, they can last longer, causing the victim to surrender or agree to some crazy license from Microsoft. It's basically being a bully.

It's smart business, however if we depended on "smart business" we'd probable be still living in caves after someone patented "shelters."

I don't know if it will or will not convert people to Linux, however it agrees with my belief/rules of "you don't support me, I don't support you." Since I don't run Windows, not releasing a Linux client fits into the "don't support me" category.

For example, I'm a mods/mutator creator for UT2003. If they stop porting to Linux, I can't play anymore, so there is no need for me to create mods and mutators. So not only do they lose a player who will pay for the new game, the lose the work I would do for their game. And I have been told that my stuff is the only reason why some people play UT2003. :)

How do you verify that the code SCO provides is the same code that is in UnixWare? Do they disassemble shrink-wrapped version of UnixWare and compare it to the given code? Do they force them to re-compile a past release of UnixWare and compare the binaries.

I hope they validate that what SCO puts forwards.
