I've got the iBook 600 (384/20G/12.1/DVD-CDRW/Airport), and I would definitely recommended one of these for what you want. When I initially bought mine, I got it for mainly the same reasons: small and light, rugged, plenty of features. I was also interested in OS X, but not ready to commit--the fact that I could use Debian was the only thing that cinched the purchase for me. When I received it, I reformatted, installing Debian alongside OS 9 and OS X. For the first couple months or so, I used Linux quite a bit, but recently, I reformatted and went all OS X. This is because OS X is fast and stable enough now, and any software I ever used on Linux could be used, all in a much nicer GUI than Linux ever saw. Obviously, the iBook isn't for everyone, but your needs sound rather similar to mine, and I have been nothing but happy with my iBook in the 4 months or so that I've owned it.

That's like saying that because my car requires gas to function, that it should be called a Nissan Texaco/Altima, or a Nissan Chevron/Altima. There will always be dirty pirates that want something for nothing, and there's nothing that will change that. 11. Re:why would you want to? on Hack Enables Quartz Anti-Aliasing In All Carbon Apps · · Score: 3, Interesting

Altogether, font anti-aliasing is really a niche feature that's best left off by default. Only a few applications really benefit from it--mostly graphic design and photo editing applications dealing with large fonts.

Personally, I prefer that it be on by default. Far more things than design and photo editing benefit from it--IE, namely. The text rendering in IE on OS X is just downright horrid compared to some of the other browsers available (Chimera, OmniWeb)--so much so that I had started to use IE less and less as Chimera matured, solely because Chimera looks so much better. After installing Silk, IE looks essentially just as good as Chimera. Now, until Chimera really advances in features and stability, I've got no reason to use it because the text in IE finally looks as good as the rest of OS X.

Beyond that, it has built-in CF/SM card readers and apparently will print photos right from the memory cards, although I've never tried. Just as my beef in that case would have to be with the oil maker and not Nissan, if I had a drive toasted by one of these discs, my problem would be with the disc's manufacturer, not with Apple. It is likewise absurd that Apple should just fix the machines and then turn around and try to bill Sony or whoever. Just the logistics in doing that correctly would be hideous, let alone trying to collect any actual money from the disc manufacturers. In the end, it sucks for the users, but the manufacturers of the discs are the ones to blame, not Apple.
