I'm a liberal. Lets get that out there from the start. I saw f911 and personally I didn't like it that much. Nothing I didn't already know. The Bush Bin Laden connection is way overstated. The connection was nothing any reasonable person should be concerned with (though I've heard the arguement that it was a stab at bush's connecting saddam with al quiada, and though it would be funny if this was true, it seems to me he was quite serious). What I will say however in support of the movie is its a brilliant propoganda film. He may flunk journalism class but he could teach a class on propoganda. Thats not to say most of the movie wasn't true. Its the way he presented it that was quite brilliant. I don't want to sound machiavelian but I think in this case the ends justify the means. Kerry is too nuanced in his posisions (not that he's a flip flopper mind you). The general population doesn't understand it and its easily exploited by the bush campaign. This movie is good for convincing people that see things as black and white that bush is a bad guy. Bush is so bad that I don't really care if the movie is 100% true. People pay to see it, its not the news, so in this case it pains me to say that I really am ok with it. Having said all that I think moore's other movies were real documenteries and not propoganda like f911 is. Its just for this election that moore made this movie.
I don't want to argue on the rest of your points as I don't think politics.slashdot.org has been around long enough to make a judgement (though I do think slashdot does generally lean more liberal in its other sections) but the election is veuzuela was a fair one. Carters group and others did exit polls and they matched the official results. The opposition claimed they won by a huge margin. Theres no way the exist polls were off by that much.
I'm not trying to argue that slashdot doesn't have a liberal slant BUT...Whether or not a claim has merit IS the point. If that didn't matter than I could just call up CNN and tell them George Bush is a member of the KKK and they'd report it. But they obviously wouldn't. They'd check it out and if they found it to have merrit then they would report it (at least thats how the theory goes).
Honestly the whole thing is a farse. Only congress is supposed to have the authority to declare war. Congress abdicates its responsiblity when it passes a resolution like this. Besides which the war powers act already includes provisions requiring all sorts of notifications of the congress about wars. I know nobody ever fallows that law but its there, so the Iraq resolution was from a purly legal standpoint, pointless. From a political standpoint I disagree with the war it self, but thats not what im trying to say here.
I know that, and you know that but thats just too complicated for most of the population. It would have been much smarter politically to just say that he would have voted against the war if he knew the intelegence was bad and that the bush administration neglected to talk about the significan minority views in the intelegence community. Personally I wish he had voted against it in the first place, deep down he probobly wanted to but feared the political consequences. Just goes to show one shouldn't base their votes on the upcomming election.
Its not fast enough when you are using gigabit servers that transfer entire entire movies in just seconds. It probobly would be a good idea to use encryption but it just won't happen. Some servers do use encryption on the ftp connections but that doesn't really work for fxp very well and it makes it take longer to connect to the servers so even that is rarely used. These groups essencially use speak easy security, if you know the right people you can get onto these servers, its not totally effective but its effective at spreading large amounts of warez all over the world very quickly.
I'm not advocating trying this kind of crime at the hauge but if one was to do that I don't see why US law has anything to do with it. It would be international law that people would be tried under. I don't much like that idea though because it international law is farther from the people than national law. Its really quite simple. No extradition for crimes commited on Australian soil to the US. The example always given of somebody shooting a bullet across the boarder and killing someone does't work. Murder is in all likelyhood illegal on both sides of the boarder. If its not then there should be no extradition. If it is then the country that the person is in can try them because they pulled the trigger in that country. This same thing can apply to the internet.
What I encode it tends to be TV that I need to encode just about as fast as I capture it. I can capture in segments and then encode each two minute segment right after its captured. I would think that it would be dificult to coordinate multiple machines for 2 minute files that I encode in real time and must then murge into 1 file preferably only a minute or so after the show airs.
I, for one, would love that kind of processing power for video encoding. Of course, I also use a pirated copy of windows so if I wanted to game that wouldn't really be an issue.
The Yin and Yang is actually a Taoist concept but the principle still exists in buddhism. I think you are on to something though. The buddhists advocate elimination of desire as the key to happiness. Thats essencially the problem in this country, too much desire leading to stress.
This is actually an interesting point. The benefits of a society of pot heads may actually outweigh the costs. With stress costing that much theres a pretty good chance of it anyway.
I'd say its more of a permanent effect of capitalism. Capitalism is all about people constnatly trying to do more and more, and make more and more money, and get higher and higher positions, and get better and better grades and a million other things. No wonder people are stressed. If people would just sit back and realize that they are ok right where they are they would be alot less stressed. Life is like a dance or a song. You wouldn't dance to get to a spot on the floor or play to get to the end of the song.
Your numbers are a little off on the amount of music the RIAA releases per week. I just added up all mp3s released in one week last month on a server I have access to and it came out to a total of 66.83GB. Still not that huge compared to the huge amount of data already available on the internet though.
Who are you to say its a "behavioral problem" in nature. Its a behavior in nature, thats for sure, but home died and made you god to decide whats a problem and whats not. I'm reminded of something willy wonka said in the willy wonka and the chocolate factory. "If the good lord had intended us to walk, he wouldn't have invented roller skates." Most people see this as a joke but I think it is very, very true (whether you believe in god or not. I don't personally, but if you replace it with "If the universe had... it makes just as much sense).
So what? So maybe its not genetic. Whether it is or it isn't doesn't matter. Its something people do because they have the urge to do it. It doesn't harm anyone. Whatever the source of that urge is doesn't really matter. The fact that its something that happens means its natural. Anything a person does is natural, if it wasn't natural, it wouldn't happen in nature (and no, we aren't above animals in that sense, in fact we are probobly below them because we look down on such behavior).
when you really think about it its all meta like that, everything. Everything on top of everything, with nothing real underneath. Or look at it the other way and say all the meta IS reality, either way its fun to think about it.
I don't think its necessarily a moral issue as much as copyright is just absurd. I mean REALLY think about it. Think about it like when you were a baby, when you weren't just so used to hearing this bullshit it makes sense. What does it mean to own a thought? To own a pattern of sound played on a speaker? That would be like owning the act of running. Its just something the universe does, nobody can own it. When you really think about it, intelectual property is absurd. I would disagree with the best way to fight the law is to change it. I would agree with Henry David Thoreau that the best thing to do when the law is wrong is break it and accept the consequences.
The only sure way not to get in a car crash and die is not to drive. People are always gonna drive anyway. Thats why we tell them to wear seatbelts and not that they shouldn't drive at all. This same principle should be applied to sex ed.

I just spelled it the way the person before me did...I had no idea how its spelled my self.

This slows down the transfer of warez. Thats not really tollerable to these types of people.

It was supposed to say:
<CartmanVoice>Don't be a negative nancy.</CartmanVoice>
Should have used preview.
Don't be a negative nancy

heh nope, its a koan...if you answer it with words you are wrong.

How bout some pot in every chicken? That would be entertaining.

This is a nothing article. This is just part of the same + or - war thats been going on for a while now. 9 doesn't change that.
