Except that the two outside forces which would have a noticeable effect on the experiment, the Sun and the Earth, are in equal and opposite directions at the Lagrange point. The Hill sphere does not matter in this situation.

I REALLY don't like this Backslash idea. I think the Slashback features are good enough. There's a reason the moderation system is in place, and that is to highlight the good comments. It seems that the admins feel that they do a better job moderating the comments than we do.

  4. Absolutely Wonderful! on The DS Lite U.S. Launch · · Score: 1

This is the best portable console that has EVER been released. I could not be happier with it. It's cheap, there's a ton of games, the battery lasts a long time, the screens are bright, and the colors are vibrant. Nintendo really did a great job with this one.

  8. I Don't See the Point... on MIT Plans To Convert Cell Phone Users Into Podcasters · · Score: 4, Insightful

I mean, leaving video messages back and forth is no more useful than leaving text messages for one important reason: You lose the fluidity of real conversation/discussion. If I'm having a heated discussion with someone about something, it's nice to be able to get a word in edge-wise so I can properly have a conversation with them. And facial cues/expressions kinda don't work when you can't gauge audience reaction.

  9. I'm Excited... on Three Neptune-sized Planets Found Nearby · · Score: 3, Interesting

  10. Re:Not Unique on Microsoft Releases Vista Hardware Requirements · · Score: 1

People in this thread are not getting that Mail, iTunes, etc, are not exactly resource hogs anyway. I guarantee you that Vista will run all these meager apps (or rather, the Windows counterparts) just fine with only 512 ram.

My machine has 3 gigs of ram, which is sufficient 99.999% of the time. However, having used plenty of Macs with only 512, I've found Photoshop, Mathematica, Final Cut Pro, etc, to choke quite noticeably.

Perhaps I should have been more specific in my "couple of apps" remark. Anyhow, the point is, 1 gig of ram is not a ridiculous requirement anymore these days. Hell, even 15 gigs for the install is not ridiculous when you have drives getting close to 1Tb.

  11. Not Unique on Microsoft Releases Vista Hardware Requirements · · Score: 1, Troll

I know that OS X 10.4 runs like complete ass with 512mb of RAM and a couple applications open (and don't pretend it doesn't!). I just think this will force computer manufacturers to slap more ram in the cheapo models. 1 gig isn't terribly expensive at all anymore. And by the time Vista is FINALLY released, it will be even cheaper... :)

Well, to be fair, what department WOULD regulate nanotechnology? I mean it's quite new, and has applications in MANY areas, including foods and drugs. Someone's going to regulate it eventually. I mean, congress COULD directly pass laws to regulate it, but that seems far less friendly to industry.

I will agree that iTunes is the best solution...on a Macintosh. My G5 runs iTunes so smoothly with 12000+ songs, and is easy on my system resources.

However, I have found the Windows version of iTunes to be sluggish, even on newer machines.

  18. Stupid on Radioactive Warning for Future Generations · · Score: 1

  22. This is Completely True on Leaving Early May Cost You Time · · Score: 1

I can say that what this guy found is completely reasonable. I commute from central Los Angeles to Malibu, and if I leave for work at 8am, and leave work at 5pm, it takes me about 50 minutes each way. If I leave an hour later, I can shave 10 minutes off both ways on average, and an hour after that, I can cut it down to 35 minutes each way.

However, I'm lucky in that my job has very flexible hours. If I wanted to, I could go in at noon and leave at 9pm. MOST people do not have such a liberty, either because their bosses won't let them, or because they can't be as productive during non-business hours (Especially people who collaborate extensively).

The other issue is that a lot of my friends DO work the regular hours, and since I get out of work 2 hours after they do, it's difficult to coordinate after-work activities. So, there are ups and downs to both methods. It depends strongly on your personal situation.
