If anyone has ever read and of Iain M Banks' culture novels (fantastic if you love really good sf), you'll know he comes up with some excellent names for ships. A few I remember are "Up Close and Personal", "Not Invented Here", "Shoot Them Later" and "Attitude Adjuster". How does U.S.S Attitude Adjuster sound eh?;)
When you start using a simple definition of right and wrong, it almost seems like you're living somewhere else.
Well, I don't live in the States, but I'm guessing thats not what you meant. Indeed it is more complicated, and perhaps the definition of stealing doesn't apply exactly in this case. At the end of the day though, people are downloading material without paying for it, and then claiming they wouldn't have done so if they could obtain the songs they wanted at a fairer price. While that may be true, it doesn't make it right. If I wanted a new car but wasn't willing to pay the high cost, would it be right for me to steal it, and then claim I wouldn't have done so if it had cost less? Quite obvisouly this would be a ludicrous defence. Why is this any different?
Indeed, there is definately a market out there. Whats I was ranting about was people trying to hide behind some dumb excuse, rather than just admit they were stealing it because they could.
The only reason I've used p2p networks is because while I'm willing to pay for one or two songs that I like, I'm not willing to pay for the 10 other songs on the CD I don't like.
In other words, since you can't get exactly what you want by paying for it, you'll steal it instead. This type of piss poor excuse really annoys me. Look, no one is forcing you to buy these albums. If you don't think its worth the price they're asking, then don't buy it. And if you do feel the need to steal it, don't try and hide behind some bullshit excuse.
If I could just plug a chip in my brain and suddenly be able to speak, say, japanese fluently, I can't see a problem with that. Certainly for some people the act of learning is as much of a reward as knowing something. I enjoy learning, but there is only so much time in the day. Besdies, it's what you do with the knowledge that counts, not how you obtained it.
I don't condone piracy but this is the way most geeks learn about stuff they don't teach in school - by seeing if it can be done.
Seeing whether it can be done, and providing the tools for others to easily and cheaply pirate software are two totally different things. Hacking on such things is good if all you're doing is trying to learn, imho. If you're setting out to make, or deprive others of money, then I can't see how anyone can claim it's right.
GIF's drawbacks are well known, and are not limited to the patent. For example, 256 colour palletes are very restrictive especially now virtually everyone has high colour displays. PNG isn't going anywhere, I use it for all my images and I'm very pleased with the results. If IE's support was a bit better things would be perfect.
You US folks could really do with a constitution to stop this sort of crap happening. Oh wait, you do have one. Oh well, back to the drawing board. Land of the free indeed.
That's the biggest load of bullshit I've ever read. If you think Windows is such a bloat-ridden insecure piece of crap, why are you still using it? The truth of the matter is, you can get away with not paying for it, so you will. You're a thief, end of story.

Uhm...Windows has native support for multiple desktops and it works just fine. And you're trying to tell this guy that multiple desktops is easier to work with when both of your methods seem to have the same number of advantages and disadvantages. Two-keystrokes vs a mouse click...who gives a fuck?
I never said they didn't work, I just never found it as easy to use and as configurable as any of the X window mananager ones. It a matter of preference of course, I find multiple dekstops easier, perhaps others don't. I'm just giving my opinion.
And I don't know why in god's name you would need 26 windows open at one time...it seems goddamn wreckless to me. Two mozilla windows open side by side?? Do you perhaps suffer from ADD? And don't try to tell me it's because you've got the mad skillz. I do everything from graphic design to web development to app coding and I rarely have more than 10 windows open.
I can't see how its wreckless, but okay. I have about 10 xterms open, several logged into remote machines. I generally don't close them as I use most of them on a regular basis. I happen to prefer 2 moz windows, even though I use tabs too. Just suits my working style. Gimp accounts for 9 of those windows atm, so I guess I don't noramlly have that may open. So if thats reckless, well, frankly I couldn't give a shit:)

I have to admit that I might be a strange case, since I like to have ~10 windows open at the same time...
10? I have 26 at this moment in time. I also have 5 virtual desktops, so very few of my windows are covered by others. A taskbar or alt-tab is never required. Switching desktops is a 2 keystoke affair, and if you're sensible you'll keep similar apps together on the same desktop. For example I always have 2 mozilla windows open, side by side, on desktop 2. It never has anything else there. It's one reason I find Windows so difficult to use. Those few virtual desktop packages that are available for it just don't work anywhere near as well as Window Maker.
I'm guessing there's some creative making-up-of-numbers going on.
Not necessarily. I work for one of the numerous Cambridge Colleges, and I know that several of them have 80%+ of P2P traffic. We have somewhat less than that, but thats because we're slightly more aggressive with our policing. It is a real problem, and it's certainly not decreasing.
Okay, explain why the Intel isn't of similar performance at the same clockspeed? Especially considering Intel's vastly superior R&D and financial support.
Of course, they don't have to, since they've got the fastest chip on the block.
Yep, they have. But I find it interesting that if both chips were running the same true clockspeed, the AMD would be faster. It leads me to believe that Intel rely far more on being able to ramp up their clockspeed than they do on creating a better chip. For that reason alone I prefer AMD.
Both call into question the validity of AMD's CPU rating system
Unofficially perhaps, but officially the comparison isn't to Intel chips, but to AMD's older Thunderbird processors. A 3200+ is supposed to give about the same performance a tbird would, if it was clocked to 3.2GHz.
Just blame yourself if you can't find a use for it.
If someone doesn't have a use for a program, I don't see the need to blame themselves for it. All to often there are solutions looking for problems. I'm not saying this is one of them, but I agree with some of the points the guy was making.
The guys interviewed all guessed it would be a hundred years or more before we began truly understanding what "functions" do what in the DNA strand and how it affects the organism in question.
These developers, they never document anything. Would a few comments really have been all that difficult?!;-)
NetBSD can run on more platforms than you can shake a stick at.
Well, my stick shaking was known to be legendary, so I'm sure I could have handled the job. Unfortunately I lost said stick during an incident with a live chicken and a Rabbi. But I won't go into that here...
It would be extremely useful to be able to see the output of a terminal/irc beneath another window. I rarely overlap windows. I think it's a very poor way to work. Same with having icons on the desktop. If they're all covered by other windows they're not easily accessible. I just use virtual dekstops, and lay my windows out in a tiled fashion. Flicking between desktops is a two keystroke job. Simple and convienient.

Well, you're obviously not moving anywhere.
No doubt this will end in the usual arguments about who did what and when. It always does when money is involved. Humans are just too greedy.

Not that I know of, although a couple have banned it altogether. Copyright issues play a part in that too. Not that it'll stop the kids using it...

Yeah, because its really difficult to put something over the lens, or turn it off, right? Geez...
are there Nvidia drivers for the BSDs?

An older version, but its there. I'm guessing it'll be updated soon.
