On a related note, one concern I have is "necessary plagarism." Sometimes, there is really only one logical way to make a particular statement.

    Typical idiot student....

It doesn't matter how you word something, if you are expressing an idea that isn't your own, you must provide a reference to the source that provided the idea. Word for word, paraphased, rearranged--it doesn't matter. You can say: "the XYZ does ABC every Tuesday" (Jones, 1998). Or you can say: On many Tuesdays, it is noted that ABC occurs (Jones, 1998). Both must be cited, otherwise you are plagiarizing.

There's no such thing as "necessary plagiarism."

No. $100 bills also must have a valid serial number stamped on them in two places in order to be genuine.

At any rate, the certificate and license key that comes with an unauthorized copy of windows isn't genuine, no matter how you slice it.

Actually, the volume license keys on pirated Windows usually are genuine, but Microsoft makes sure the licensors to whom they actually belong get a new key since theirs got leaked out.

    1. Someone might not have the right font.
    2. Someone might not have their system set to antialias fonts.

These are "real" concerns for "serious" designers who don't want their designs to be ever represented by something that might be fugly. The only way to accomplish this is with images or Flash.

My brother is currently one of these designers. His own web page is nothing but a table and a bunch of images. Not even any alt attributes. I'd link to it so Slashdot could ridicule him, but that wouldn't be nice.

It might be true that cell phone use is just as impairing as drunkenness.

But PLEASE don't let laws be made because of this research when there are plenty of other variables that need to be tested to see how they impair driving:

    1. adjusting the radio
    2. singing along with the radio
    3. eating fast food
    4. lighting a cigarette
    5. dealing with misbehaving child(ren)
    6. arguing with spouse in passenger seat

Until a study shows otherwise, I don't believe talking on a cell phone while driving is any more impairing than any other interaction with humans while driving. Maybe silence while driving will be required by law; then we'll see how much being dead bored impairs driving.

Personally, I think acquiring a drivers license should be much more difficult. It should certainly require testing under distracting conditions, and require complete retesting every few years.

(I rarely wait as long as 15 minutes at Costco.)

To be truthful, the wait isn't so bad for nearly half the day: between 11pm and 10am. Some of the other Wal-Marts in town seem to staff more cashiers and have a more reasonable wait, but I'm not driving out of my way for Wal-Mart.

I should be able to attend a movie theater with no less a level of decorum than I'd expect going to see a stage play, a orchestra concert, or an opera.

Keep around the current theaters at $5 a ticket for suckers who don't care if they can't enjoy the movie. But if I want an outlet to watch movie in a setting better than I can replicate at home, please--theater owners, I beg you--give me a location to do so.

Many (most?) people only vote if the ballot includes a presidential election. The closer to home the "biggest" vote on the ballot is, the fewer people turn out. If there was a vote with nothing but sheriff and coroner on the ballot, almost no one would show up to vote.

The best system for this country would be to have ONE election all year, make it mid-week, and close all workplaces (except emergency services, of course). It has to be mid-week, because otherwise people would use the holiday to go on vacation and not vote.

It will save the music labels the costs of manufacturing and distribution and it will make the portable music player manufacturers (read "Apple") more money as the last folks finally break down and buy and iPod since they can't get the stuff they want on CD anymore.

Music like older jazz, classical, other obscure music and anything aimed at listeners over the age of 50 will have a CD-buying audience for quite a foreseeable future.

Being "a complete idiot" really transcends education, wealth, and social status. I've met complete idiots in all levels of society. It really boils down to making decisions that, at the same time, benefit yourself, your family, your peers, and society as a whole.
