Costs get pretty high quickly when your upgrade involves bashing out walls to replace data cables that were installed before the era when ducting became a thing.

The news folks went and interviewed random Joe/Jill-on-the-streets on this issue when it happened. The majority response was "What's an Equifax?".

  8. >> There should be an IQ test that needs to be passed before being allowed to vote.

IQ (Literacy) tests were used for many years to keep "undesirables" from exercising their ability to influence government. Wealth requirements (land ownership or poll taxes), race requirements, and other methods have also been used. Historically, these "undesirables" were poor rural black people. Maybe now these "undesirables" are poor rural white people?

The current method of "only people that care enough can vote" seems to be a reasonable compromise between the country being run by "only the not undesirables of the day" vs "everybody is required to vote, nobody cares, so the result is effectively random()".

The distributed nature of our elections means we can get the best security if each state implements different security measures, so an attacker would need to figure out the weaknesses of 50 of them, as opposed to a single monolithic system.

The way our voting system works, if one state was "hacked" then the worst that would come of it would be the electoral votes from that one state would be potentially affected. This could swing an election, in theory, if a swing state was "hacked".

That being said, "hacking" the election in a non-swing state like North Dakota or California wouldn't do much. Nobody would believe it if North Dakota suddenly went 90%+ Democrat, nor would they believe it if California went 90%+ Republican.

    In Oregon you have:
