I agree, the Internet did not fail. What might have failed was users knowledge of where to look for info. Basically, user ignorance. One other thing: that user ignorance is curable.I personally appreciated having Slashdot in addition to CNN television coverage. Not sure I ever would have found ananova.com without it. Several other links led me to mirrored images and such, all info gleaned off Slashdot. Outstanding job guys, and thank you for the insight into how it was accomplished.

Has someone not taken their prozac today?

How the fuck do you know it isn't what is going to allow us to catch the perpetrators? How the fuck do you know that it didn't prevent another plane from being hijacked? I could speculate forever, but the question remains, how the FUCK do you know, you stereotypical slashdot arrogant know-it-all?

Catch them? Umm, they flew into buildings. We MIGHT find the backer, we might not. Did having this monitoring stop this plan? Maybe it did stop others, but NOT THESE. As to being an arrogant know it all? Actually, I do not know what will catch them, I did not claim to. This is not speculation. Having Echelon in place, and monitoring of cell calls did NOT stop those planes.
Listen bud, the more I read your reply, the more i wonder what your level of comprehension is.

  4. Re:To everyone complaining about Carnivore on More WTC News · · Score: 1

Ok.. I empathize wholly with your vehemence, but there are some points to consider.
Did you or I commit atrocious acts of violence? No, of course not. Will having our rights trounced on fix this? Hmm.
Think for a moment. NSA has already admitted to listening to recordings of ALL cell phone traffic from NY that day. Did having access to all of that data make one iota of diference? Apparently not. Did Echelon "protect" us? No, apparently not.
Along with the rest of the nation, I watched radar images tracking these hijacked planes. Was anything able to protect us? Apparently not.
What did mitigate this act of terror? That is easily answered. Folks like Jeremy Glick spring to mind. A braver person than most I must say , who was willing to stand up tall and give his (their) life in an effort to save others.
All the data processing and collection in the world is easily circumvented by simply reverting to a simpler technology...word of mouth.
As a nation, no as a world society, I belive we must band together as one to fight this type of mindless terror, but taking steps towards turning my home country into some form of police type state will only make matters worse.
Once again, let me reiterate: I wholeheartedly feel your pain. Since this act of terror unfolded, I have not slept more than about 30 minutes. I find my nerves shattered, my ability to function rationally a bit diminished. I have donated blood in some sort of attempt to just DO SOMETHING.... preferably something positive and helpful.
At some point, the attempt to understand this incident, and a resolve to comprehend the circumstances leading up to such a loss of life MUST be attempted. We must strive to COMMUNICATE with each other as human beings sharing a common planet.
Please, reply if you'd care to. I strive not to degenerate into mindless rantings of rage, and I urge others to do the same.

Don't get me started about IE for the Mac. There is actually 3 distinct browser types I need to be aware of.
Performance wise, IE has it...hands down. Try loading slashdot in IE, then wait to see how long it is in Netscape from download time to rendering. Amazing difference.

Its a different standard, slower, and I have been waiting too long for the new "features" to smooth out in Netscape.

To be real blunt, any business schooled music exec that cannot see the demand for free music is blind. What a HUGE opportunity to develop a new market. For crying out loud, people are begging for free downloadable music.
I would much rather spend time debating ways to provide a sampling of music for free. What if .... an artist released a lower quality digital version online...then , used some form of advertising to entice you to buy the full quality cd for a *reasonable* price. Mabbe there are better ways to implement something like this, but the main point is to give your customers what they are asking for, a simple business concept.
Anyone familiar with the business model at your local convenience/grocery store? Know what a loss leader is? It is a planned loss to achieve a bigger gain. Works real well for 7-11 and the like. I think it would be cool as heck to get officially sanctioned mp3 music ripped by my favorite bands. Mark my words, some other band will come along and lead the way, it is only a matter of time. Some band will figure a way out to get real rich and famous for figuring out a way to provide mp3 music to their listeners. Especially now that so much attention is being paid to the matter.

  19. Re:Theft on Will This Genie Ever Go Back In The Bottle? · · Score: 1

Not to get too offtopic, but what exactly would it take for a band to "Make It" in the land of mp3? What a cool concept. You would have to have massive banner placement or something else with a sound clip. Maybe in tandem with a cool video with TV advertising it could be done. Now to approach this from the other end of the spectrum, an already established band could really pave the way for something like this. Aren't there artists already releasing singles and such? I wonder how history will look upon the beginnings of the internet as such.
