No, we haven't. This setup works for SERVER software. Do you really think Microsoft would give up the billions they make from DESKTOP users who would happily run their Windows XP with no support option if they could just download it for free? Think THEN post.
Well, I've got this little free software program called ssh - perhaps you'd like to try and crack it.
Um, is ssh even at all the same thing? No. Give me a copy of SSH that uses a serial-key registration system (since that's what we're talking about with Windows 2003) for installation, and is open source, and yes I'll crack the install protection on it in a heartbeat.
It is kinda funny how the parent post, and all the other similar child posts were written by people who don't know the difference between a general cryptographic system and a registration/serial-key system.
What happened to this individual, while unfortunate and in my opinion indefensible, is nowhere near what happens to those "disappeared" under totalitarian regimes. Say what you want, but I seriously doubt he's going to be tortured, killed, and buried in an unmarked mass grave.
Yeah but the problem is one of a slippery slope. Maybe the current administration won't torture and kill him, but they are setting an insanely bad precedent that may be used by someone else, in the future, who will.
It isn't enough not to be an 'evil government', you also have to do everything in your power to make it harder for administrations who come after you to LEGALLY be an 'evil government'. The Bush Administration isn't doing this at all..they are passing all sorts of knee-jerk laws that might not be *COMPLETELY* abused by them, but now they are on the books forever.
Of course the problems with this approach is that it's way too easy to use the IDE as a crutch - especially Intellisense. One day you'll be in a situation (like a technical quiz for an interview) where you won't have these tools available, so unless you're paying attention you won't know what to do.
If I were on an interview and they were asking me such an API-specific question that Intellisense would have helped me answer it, I wouldn't work at that company anyway.
I must agree. People like to tout how DeCSS exists "to allow DVD playback under Linux", completely ignoring its shady warez-kiddie (and very Windows-specific) origins.
There is a reason why most places only post a single April Fools Day joke -- it isn't because they don't have enough material, it is because "trick" jokes only work in isolation. If everything you say/do/post is a joke, for the entire day, it is nothing but annoying, and any jokes that may have worked well on their own don't work at all because it becomes WAY TOO OBVIOUS when you have them all huddled together.
This would be a pretty cool game, IMO. Seems to be a joke for sure. The quote in the writeup on Shacknews pretty much confirms this (or alternately, makes Frank Miller look like an ass) for claiming to have been "a fan of Rockstar since the first GTA". Of course, there was no Rockstar when the first GTA was released.
If this is supposed to be a joke, I think he forgot to add the humor. If it is supposed to be for-real, why not throw in some more devices that really have nothing to do with each other... say a pacemaker, a microwave oven, or, like, the wheel?
The market for programmers slowly moves away from Microsoft.
Companies more and more switch to non-Microsoft solutions, meaning that they must switch programmers too. Knowing UNIX is becoming more and more of an asset;
This is exactly the kind of advice people were giving for job security back in the early to mid 90s -- except reversed.
Hey chill out, and while you're at it, maybe you could learn to read. I wasn't calling him a dumbass because he decided to stop shopping at Office Depot, I was calling him a dumbass because he ever shopped there in the first place.
7. Text Adventure
Nethack is still one of the greatest games ever.
That's all well and good, but Nethack isn't a Text Adventure game. The fact that the original implementation used ASCII characters doesn't make it a text adventure. "Text Adventure" as a game genre means things like the old Infocom games.
From everything I see, it's too late in the game to make a new graphical interface - unless it has a compatability layer to work with X apps.
Compatibility at the X layer is overblown, how many people really run apps from so long ago? Sooner or later you need to cut the ties. A new GUI system compatible with QT libs or GTK would be good enough for most people. The people who want to keep using X can, its not like X11 will completely disappear just because focus shifts to something else...
Not likely. Nothing of this sort would ever occur without first having massive changes in campaign law. It is damn near impossible to hold a national office without being completely financially indebted to all sorts of commercial interests want copyrights EXTENDED, not reduced...And that explains why this is the current trend, and will be for a long, long time.
Sorry, the Microsoft VS 2003 (currently in beta for marketing reasons, though the code is really finalized) C++ compiler is THE MOST standards compliant C++ compiler you can get after Comeau C++. It supports every feature, with rock-solid stability, except for the 'export' keyword, which is useless anyway. And unlike Comeau C++ it can be used to generate real-world optimized code.
I guess they don't have humor where you come from.

Idiots.
He must mean "popular" in the sense of "according to a survey of, well, me"....

Monty Python just isn't funny. Never was, never will be.
FIRST "TurboTax is the work of the devil" post with +1 karma bonus.
Satire implies funny. The article wasn't funny, bitch.

Were you already shopping at Office Depot?
If no..they've lost nothing
If yes...fucking dumbass.
Yeah that's a great plan, guy...Now what if you want to run more than one application on your system, say one from Adobe and one from Macromedia?
That's all well and good, but Nethack isn't a Text Adventure game. The fact that the original implementation used ASCII characters doesn't make it a text adventure. "Text Adventure" as a game genre means things like the old Infocom games.
Maybe those tinfoil hat people are on to something after all.

Yeah you can see how badly its worked out for them... Bill Gates cries himself to the bank every day over this.
I hate Farscape. You stupid nerds.
