Actually if I remember correctly you can adjust fuel trims without replacing your car's computer by knowing the correct memory locations and just adjusting the information to them.

No matter though, my DMS is but N/A and I doubt I will have the money to do a motor swap on it to make it a turbo. Soon though, I plan to get a '99 GSX and do a 6-bolt swap on it or just an Evo setup. Then install the ultimate car computer. :)

  5. Why hasn't anyone actually monitored their car? on Linux Based CarPC · · Score: 1

Everytime I had ideas to build a car PC (always lacked the funding) I always wanted to not just play movies, mp3s, wardrive, checkweather, browse the web, etc.; I also wanted to know what was going on with my car. Driving a 1993 DSM this is a fairly easy task since the car already outputs data from the computer in standard RS-232 format and at least a couple of dataloggers is readily available from sourceforge for DSMs. I would think this would be even easier to do for any car manufactured after 1995 (or was it 1996?) which support the very standard ODBII. I mean c'mon? Who doesn't want to see the exact statistics of their RPM, Knock, O2, air temperature, coolant temperature, etc. as a nice screensaver?

  6. Won't happen. EOF on Half-Life 3 on the XBox 360? · · Score: 1

This simply won't happen. It would take Valve YEARS to develop a sequel to HL2. It is taking them well over a year to develop Lost Coast. Moreover, still under development is TFC2 and CS2. More likely is that HL2 will be ported to the 360 rather than the XBox so that no loss of quality (other than controls) is necessary (see Doom3 for example of quality loss). Unless the XBox 360 will be able to run Steam I highly doubt HL3 will be released for it anytime near the PC release.

This is all without having to know the ins and outs of programs like 3Ds, Maya, Lightwave, etc. and without rendering every single frame out with your CPU 3-5 times to cover the most used resolution, etc.

We spend enough time staring at computer screens and getting yelled at for improper syntax used on a daily basis. Why can't we have a break when communicating with human beings? Improper syntax usage still effectively communicates the message. After all, communicating is the only reason *any* language exists.

And it's about time that vet starts repaying me for all the hours I've put in fixing his computer. So far the pooch hasn't been ill, but then he only has about 500 parts. But when he does get sick, at least I know I'll be taking him to a fully qualified canine service engineer to be mended, not a local amateur.
Because the people who take their computers apart, use them daily, and usually teach the tech support weanies are really the amateurs. See to be really qualified you obviously need a piece of paper like the CompTIA A+ certification (most geeks, /.ers, and CS students can take that in their sleep). Yep... unqualified amateurs alright.

We built our systems, tuned them, made them perform better than they should, kept them virus free, and done it for less than going with a retail box just so we can be called amateurs. Sorry, but only pros can do things like that.

What's really sad though, is that all you need to do to use a computer and have almost no problems is well... RTFM. =/

Windows is easier to use. I can't use any distro of Linux and install programs the same way. Under Windows, most programs just run a setup.exe or install.exe (sometimes replace exe with msi) and the program installs for you. Sure Red Hat has it's RPMs and Debian has the apt-get system. However, in no way will this carry over to other distros. Linux is still very user hostile over all. There is no easy way to setup users and permissions or anything like that unless you RTFM. Most people simply don't want to RTFM =/
