Cingular makes you pay to get recieve, though that might have changed in the last few months. You can just call them up and ask that they disable SMS alltogether. The problem is that messages (at least on my phone, then again there is problably some hidden option) come through automatically.
I agree completely that this format sounds superior to others. It does a very good job around 180kbps (note: MPC/MP+ ONLY does VBR, unlike MP3 where VBR was added later and Vorbis where it is optional).
Not only is hardware support lacking, but program support is lacking as well: there are plugins for most players (Winamp, XMMS, etc), but when it comes to downloading MPC files (read: p2p filesharing) most do not support the format (unless you search for all files). WinMX just started supporting OGG in the last few months, but none of the major filesharing programs support MPC. Unless one does, the format, which has been around for a couple of years now, will probably remain one used by only a few.
TIFF is a wrapper format (more or less). By default it is lossless-uncompressed, but there is also a lossless-compressed format (I think using deflate or LZW or similar), and some (Adobe) have even extended it to support JPEG (JPEG inside a TIFF file....) and ZIP (zipped photo data inside a TIFF file).
See the similar argument for ogg being a wapper format : OGG supports Vorbis (audio), Theora (video), Speex (speech audio), and FLAC (lossless audio, though I don't think its 100% integrated just yet).
As others may have already posted, UC Irvine is not the only University to do this. I attend the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign (UIUC, yes, the one that 'invented' the web browser and the www), and last year they started a policy of 3mb combined bandwith on all file sharing programs (at the time, Kazaa, Morpheus and *tella). 3mb/s across 10,000 people that lived in places served by the UIUC network (compared to the roughly 60mb/s pipe that they had access to) is VERY slow, even if only 1/10 of them are filesharing. And this is not in any particular direction. Upstream and downstream are shared in that 3mb/s cap.
This year they have expaned the ports covered to include WinMX and newer p2p clients (though there are a few extremely new ones out that get through), and I believe they still have the same 3mb/s cap.
Someone on my dorm's network downloaded it last night. I didn't watch it (would rather see it on a real screen), but I watched the 1 minute 'preview' file, and its not really worth it. There are better shaky cam recordings of movies out there...
I guess it would be an understatement to say that Lucas is mad

Right, like Compaq did this what, 5 years ago with the 3000 series (Chamelion or something like that).. Apple just finally did it, and now everyone thinks that they came up with the whole idea of an integrated computer/LCD.
Well, one slight correction, the LCD is still external from the computer. The Profile 3, as with all prior products, has everything in one big, bulky unit. The iLamp is uniqe in that the LCD is free from the bulk of the actual computer.
...English teacher Christy Wagner said her students suddenly became "irritable and easily distracted" and that she herself felt nauseous whenever she was at the school. In September, she took a medical leave.
"This overexposure to pulsed microwaves has been a personal tragedy for me," Wagner said in an e-mail interview. "I'm left hypersensitive -- even my mouse burns my hand when I use my computer now."
Question: Since computers put out a significant amount of electical waves, at least significant for people who may be "sensitive", why are they using computers at all? Don't forget power lines, which radiate a lot more (and some say cause cancer)...
Ok, I tried digging through the archives and I couldnt find it, but I swear that I have seen this on Slashdot before. It was at least a year ago, probably closer to two. Anyone else remember this?
Wasnt there a similar thread? Well, not one that directly adressed this, but talked about the improvements in RC2, and resulted in the usual quality comparison arguments?
IMPO, its too early to tell about OGG. Its not 100% complete, and im not going to take the time to convert my collection of a couple 1000 songs (all 192k+ mp3 / mp+) just to do a quality comparison on an format that isnt complete.
Wait until the full thing is out, then repeat the question.
Wrong: Watch ST: Generations (the 7th movie). This takes place about 15 years after the 6th movie, and about 70(?) years before TNG. Guinan is seen on a refugee ship headed for the Federation. She was not around before that (Enterprise takes place about 200 years before this).
There is a common audio skip problem, which has been fixed, but my ISP has caught on to my large quantity of upoloading and they are limiting my speed, so I can't reupload. Its NOT a big deal though.
As for how I did it:
http://planet.danwatt.dyndns.org/Computer/Articl es/2001/QuicktimeDivx/
Change that.... for some reason one of the programs I used outputed at 60FPS, though the video is only 24FPS, so the file sizes are way off. I added a new version. Here are the 4 versions and their correct sizes:
DIVX 3 @ 900k/s : 11.8MB
DIVX 4 @ 800k/s : 11.2MB
DIVX 4 @ 400k/s : 7.2MB
DIVX 4 @ 300k/s : 6.5MB
All versions have 128k mp3 audio, except the DIVX 4 @ 300k/s, which has 112k mp3.
I am still looking for mirrors, so please let me know if you have a FTP account for me to upload to. (danwatt@No.Spam.home.com)
After many hours of figuring out how to unfux0r^H^H^H^H^H^H^H convert Quicktime -> DIVX, I have done it and created 3 versions:
DIVX3 (the old format) at 900k/s : 19MB
DIVX4 (new format) at 800k/s VBR : 35MB
DIVX4 at 400k/s VBR : 20MB
All look very good, and the DIVX3 version is on par with the DIVX4 400k version in terms of quality.
Yes, the numbers are skewed (DIVX3 doesnt have good rate matching), but I have the 3 versions available. Could somone offer a mirror for me to upload these three to, since I have very limited bandwith? E-mail me at danwatt@NOSPAM.home.com if you have a mirror available.

Here Microsoft, take my personal data. You can have it for free. I don't care what you do with it. Oh, and here is my CC# so that you can charge me to access my data. Oh, and go ahead, if my friends want to look up my name or email address, they can pay as well to see it.
After all, you are Microsoft, and we love ya, so here is our money!

Doing work on my carmp3 player, which was also to serve as a small desktop capable of gaming, I have had some experience in this area. Book PCs are VERY nice and are by far the smallest (I have one 3x10x12 inches), while small PC cases (Micro/FlexATX) are a bit bigger (about 6x13x14, basically twice as big). The main difference? Book PCs are NOT expandable, while small cases are. You COULD always go the rackmount (1U or 1/2U) way and get a PCI slot, but still no AGP.
My best bet (and the system that has worked the best for me): Find a case with 1 5.25 (CDROM), 1 3.5 (FLOPPY) and 1 internal 3.5 (HARD DRIVE), that has 3 or 4 bay slots in the back. Then get a good motherboard (I have an Amptron 805LMR, integrated sound and network, 1 AGP, 1 CMR, 2 PCI) with as much integrated as possible. Avoid integrated video, that can be messy at times. Also, on power supply: I have run this computer with a TNT2U, Duron 650, 2 7200RPM hard drives, 1 CD-R, and 192MB of ram, PLUS my power hungry video capture card (takes a LOT of juice), all on a 150W power supply. I was warned time and time again that this would not work, but I have had NO problems with power. The only issue is heat, and that is because I do not have a fan in the front of the case.
As for fast equipment for gaming, AMD CPUs ROCK (my duron 650 blows away my Celeron 800, even though the 800 is MUCH faster than its predicessors) and are cheap. Duron / TBird 900 should work great. 7200RPM hard drives are by far the best choice for gamers. I have tried Maxtor 20GB 7200 (dont recall model) drives and IBM 75GXP 45GB drives, and both work very well. The IBM is faster, IMPO. Video brings up the usual debate: Top of line (Geforce 3/2) or budget (GF2MX or ATI Radeon). Go with what works for you. Sound is not an issue. My integrated sound card sounds just as good as my SBLive, minus the environmental audio.
"Possible applications for the memory include hand-held computers and mobile phones, which require large amounts of memory in a compact form. "
Um, I don't know ANYONE who needs 10.8 terrabytes in a mobile phone, or even in a hand-held computer. Want I WANT is 10.8 terrabytes (These are the size of credit cards, and only $50? Give me a RAID-5 of 10 or 20 of these;)) in my DESKTOP. Something in me is wanting to believe this is 10.8 TB, but reality kicks in and 10.8GB seems much more feasable. Can anyone validate the claim of TB or is it a typo for GB?
If you want to stick to strat. games, try Homeworld or Homeworld: Cataclysm (though being newer, might not be as good for your study). Not only is it RTS, but the gamer has to think in 3, not 2, dimmensions.

Why is that there if dos is no longer used BEFORE windows is loaded?
I need to try putting a 16bit executable into autoexec.bat and see what happens
Except worse. I remember reading once that some small computer shops were shipping "P2-266's" when in reality the chips were Cel-266's (NO cache)... Remember, it is not always the chip manufacturer's fault. It can be the shops fault also

WTF? In this government study on the content of Gnutella files, look at the list of top matches:
divx
porn
star trek voyager
sex
xxx
teen
Ok, maybe I am assuming things wrong, but WHY would there be more searches for Voyager than sex? WTF is that?
