PARENTS ARE OBLIGATED TO DECIDE FOR THEMSELVES HOW THEY WANT TO MANAGE THEIR CHILDREN'S ACCESS TO THE INTERNET. Please do NOT ask the government or buinesses to become the ethics police, that's MY job.
While I agree with your argument that it ultimately lies with the parent - Yahoo in particular has gone overboard with lack of moderation
Plus - I don't understand why they would allow their servers to be bogged down so with all the fake profiles, personals, auctions - not to mention the perverse and strange groups and chat rooms.
Yahoo IM and Yahoo personals have become the EXACT same as their chat rooms - just ways for the sexually perverse, incredibly strange, or overly obnoxious marketer to gain attention.
Yahoo Personals/Yahoo Profiles for instance are about 60% fake - there to be front end or link builders for XXX chat/websites
Yahoo IM has become almost unbearable to be visible with fake "bot-women" IMming me and inviting me to sex cam chats
Yahoo auctions are over 90% fake - just look at the Mac Category - I don't think there are but two out of the 45 auctions that are currently up in the Mac category that are legit.
I've also seen a few linux drivers for modded devices that use the top serial port (next to the headphone port) - something the Apple firmware doesn't allow.
Question - if a device has Linux (Desktop drivers) - does that mean it could be modified to work with the iPod - just recompiling the drivers for iPodLinux?
... has been made better by a college education.... leaders are born. (Cliche=yes)
He also said that he furthers his education every day and reads a lot on the net.
lso of note during this event:
Several students asked Jobs to hire them
An environmental group flew a plane overhead protesting Apple's lack of an iPod recycling program
I guess the environmental group didn't get the message that Apple has an iPod recycling program. I also would assume that these protestors don't know that planes are fueled by fossil fuels. DOH!
It was extremist, disruptive, uncalled for (at this venue) and possibly unauthorized as I think college events were placed on a no fly list after 9/11 without authorization from the state. I have a private pilot's license and know this to be true for my home state of South Carolina - California law may be different.
A real education only comes through talent, responsibility, and willingness to be be the best person you can be.
Actually it was a great idea and started to be successful - the company's CEO was the problem - he went through 200 milion in seed capital - I have been told by employees that Plasma screens were plentiful (when they were $15,ooo each) and gold bathroom fixtures were the norm.
The cuecat marketing was poor only in that it created a problem that sought a solution.
Schools having different grading systems, different books, different base ciriculum is unfair.
When I was in school - I live on the border of two districts - I could have gone to the school closest to the local University (wealthier, smarter kids) or the rural school (poorer, less intelligent kids)
The grading system at the rural school was 90-100 = A
The grading system at the wealthier/university town school was 94 -100
I ending with about a 92 average = I was a B+ student at the wealthier/university school - but I would have been an A student at the other school.
The wealthier/university school had all the technology - the poorer school had little if any computers (back in 79-92)
This technology if not granted or present to all schools only serves to further separate students by the example I have given here.
for IM alias phishers to just plug IDs into Yahoo or AOL IM - have a bot or boiler room chatter talk with you through IM and try to scam you either A) Out of money or B) Into visiting some porn site.
Apple WAS a MAJOR developmental partner in ARM for the Newton - the processor line was GREATLY enhanced during the Newton run.
So was Sharp - probably shoulda googled before that statement!
Apple Already Uses Intel-Intel Uses What Was Apple
on
Apple to Use Intel Chips?
·
· Score: 4, Insightful
Apple no longer owns a stake in ARM (sold it all to Intel), but they do have experience and could easily hire/rehire programmers that worked on Apple/ARM devices (read as Newton)
My guess is that this will be for a new ARM processor for the iPod - the custom chip is probably too weak for advanced features.
Intel has been wanting to move to RISC chips for some time - maybe they want to become a CELL/PowerPC production partner to catch on the wave - 100% of the gaming world will be using PowerPC or PowerPC deritives in the next year - year and a half -
Intel now owns the largest stake in ARM (bought from Apple) - this is the processor in the majority of PocketPCs, Palms, and GPS units. So - this Intel processor is most likely for a new device or even the iPod.
Also take into account that USB2.0 chipsets are currently made by Intel (and others) and that Apple uses Intel chips in the XServe line for RAID I/O.
I think most of your points are picky... but this one is easily explained...
1. 3PO and R2 have their memory wiped. Fine, but how does that explain that Vader doesn't exclaim upon first seeing the droids in the 2nd trilogy "3PO! R2! I remember you two!" It's not like they even changed their names so they could start 'fresh' in their lives as androids.
These were standard protocol and standard astromech droids... they were named just like many Johns, Marks, Micheals on the planet. R2 was an R line astromech - we saw several R4's and R2's in the other movies.
In this movie there were AT least 5 protocols that looked identical to C3PO - in the original trilogy, Anthony Daniels even voiced another protocol droid and said something like "Eechoot tah" when 3PO addressed him.
You say, the exile and Yoda failed like it was a short period of time for Episode III to transpire - when in fact - Episode III was over an 8 month period of time. So, 18 years isn't long in the Star Wars galaxy. After all, the transition between Anakin in Eps I to Episode II was 11 years and to III 8 years. Luke from IV to V is 4 years and to VI is 6 more years. So, in those terms the time passage is relatively short....
"I doubt that many of the TigerDirect customer base give a damn about either Apple or Geek politics. Let's not take ourselves too seriously here"
That's the point of taking ourselves seriously here - if we agree that TigerDirect is bad company to do business with and we spread the word - it does matter and does show the effectiveness of geek politics!
This is an often overlooked tidbit, and it's a reason Jobs was in some ways happy to leave Apple (after being ganged up on by execs)
He formed Next where he was essentially able to create the LISA on the super powerful 68030 and 68040 processors.
The video that circulated the internet a few months back with Next's capabilities were mind blowing.
Only now is Jobs true insight being seen with the release of Tiger - analysts point that this is the "thing beyond that iPod" that will grow marketshare for Apple - amazing - it was most like the LISA project....
I agree that the pension thing is mess - but the reaity is - these compensation plans were unrealistic -
I do not believe in socialism - which most of Europe does.
Income redistribution through taxes and teaching people that they are not responsible for the things they say, do, and participate in by letting someone else do it - well.... brings you to the society we have today.
I don't consider the BBC to be quality television anymore than any american network. In fact, sometimes the BBC oversteps it's bounds politically - most like OUR government sponsored channel PBS.
Stealing code and claiming it's yours is quite different from downloading a song and listening to it.
By downloading the song and listening to it you are not claiming you wrote it, sang it, or even bought it.
Now, if you go out and sell said song at ANY price - there is the violation of the download.
Most people who feel filesharing of songs is ok - also feel as if it's promotion for the artist. I download rather infrequently - but MANY MANY of my friends buy music based on what they hear in my car and I also go to concerts and promote iTunes downloads on my website!
Your files physically expire... as in cease to work.
You must burn them to CD (which costs more to gain the priveledge)
Then, you won't be able to burn them back or rip them... the only method from that point (or straight from the beginning of the download) to get a non expiring DRMless file is to record it analog.
What is often questioned by others here on slashdot - is actually a sustainable business model by Apple. By locking the iPod to iTunes... Apple doesn't have to worry about competitors like this coming along. They also don't have to worry about companies like Walmart coming in and underpricing them.
The ONLY reason that iTunes is successful and therefore the iPod is because of this lock in.
Contrary to belief, it DOES promote competition - as evidence here. It's just that no one seems to be capable of creating a more user friendly total package than Apple.
Yep. Ms. Rosen is a lesbian. How's that relevant to the discussion at hand, again?
Stereotypically, I shouldn't have to say. Realistically, it does provide some background about her.
Apparently, gays are modding me down here thinking I made that reference to bash her. In fact, just the opposite. I made there reference, appalled that she represents a prominent executive that is gay and has a very ill concieved stance on filesharing and on Apple.
Former Apple executive (and former RIAA CEO and Chairwoman) Hilary Rosen has spoken out against Apple's iTunes Music Store, notes Slyck.com. "The new iPod my girlfriend gave me is a trap," said Rosen. "Yeah, it is great looking and I really love the baby blue leather case but when, oh when, will Steve Jobs let me buy music from somewhere other than the Apple iTunes store and put it on my iPod?" She continues: "There are little players to make your favorite music even more portable than ever starting at as little as 29 bucks. Most every player device works at every one of these "stores" and it is pretty easy to keep all the songs, no matter where you got them, in a single folder or "jukebox" on your computer."
"The new iPod my girlfriend gave me is a trap," said Rosen.
Girlfriend??
______________________________________________ "... when oh when will Steve Jobs let me buy music from somewhere other than the Apple iTunes store and put it on my iPod?" "
When the market dictates that this is a good business move. Right now, Apple can combat the RIAA on prices (read as lower prices for you and me) with such large marketshare.
Also Ms. Rosen is free to walk in to the thousands of retail locations that sell CDs and rip them to her iPod at any time she wishes.
"There are little players to make your favorite music even more portable than ever starting at as little as 29 bucks."
Then go buy them! Apple isn't telling you to only buy iPods. By controlling the player and the store, Apple is able to sustain a successful business model - NO OTHER COMPETITOR IS MAKING MONEY!!!
"Most every player device works at every one of these "stores" and it is pretty easy to keep all the songs, no matter where you got them, in a single folder or "jukebox" on your computer."
But not as easy as the iPod... nor as high quality GUI and combination as iTunes provides. Besides those other stores do not support the Mac. If they sold songs that supported the Mac in a format that played on the Mac, then as a CEO of a company that produced macs - I might be willing to open up MY store.
Also, tell me how many custom cases & accessories I can find for the Creative Muvo again?...
Reaching the 128MB ceiling seems to have been easy for most games... but don't be fooled... 256MB cards are only faster because of better processor technology associated with them and because there can be a slight overflow or memory leak that may exceed 128MB
I don't see that ANY game or CAD or rendering engine could reach this ceiling... at least for now... and the apps and games that could take adavantage of such memory would require better GPUs to push the bandwidth anyway.

That's intriguing ...
