The real answer here is... he's got insurance. This is almost a blessing because you can be assured that all "this dive equipment and submarine stuff" is insured for full replacement value. He just managed to reoutfit with the latest and greatest technology.
The real question is... since he lives in the area.... how much is he helping his neighbor and how much money and workforce will he dontae to those that are homeless and now beyond being in debt because their means of living have been destroyed?
Also, I thought the programs associated with such application [as needed for error correction] are running multiple scenarios/multiple threads of the same calculation.
Take the human genome for instance. Most of it [the real research part] is being done on Xserves currently.
The sequencing program is actually running 1000's of times and taking the calculation that comes up 99.97% of the time to be the correct one. This is then rerun until the calculation reaches an impossibly close number to 100%.
In the US - you are required if asked in a court of law or face jail.
The offense is corporate espionage (really)
You don't have to reveal any details to a public source - and really you don't have to reveal them with a subpoena. However, if this is brought to trial - Apple could sue the websites in question for distributing trade secrets.
If the websites don't cooperate, Apple could make their lives REALLY difficult by asking advertisers such as CDW/MacMall/TekServe not to advertise with them or face contractual "reconsideration".
Apple has the upper hand here - and I see them doing nothing wrong. Apple depends VERY HIGHLY on keeping things mum. Do you think if word would have gotten out about the iPod in it 1 1/2 year development cycle that INSTANT clones would appear BEFORE Apple's release? Creative and Sony are JUST NOW catching the iPod craze.
And of course those that do reasearch on Paypal and find the paypalwarning.com and paypalsucks.com websites - also don't realize:
- Posts that praise paypal are deleted [often] - Posts that try to assist users with problems are deleted - Paypalsucks.com is sponsored by the competition - yowcow - You are allowed to post anonymously and as registered - There's a disporportionate # of comments to registered users
I think Paypal did a good job - they didn't have to compensate "us" at all.
It was a nice gesture on their part and for you to assume that Paypal - with its ENORMOUS bandwidth/customer service burden - should be up up 365 days a year without a single glitch is just ludacris.
In case you haven't noticed, the new front page is more user friendly and transactional searches are almost 50% faster. That was compensation to me.
I also listed more than normal the day they gave transactional fees.
I find that a lot of people are doing eBay as side jobs.
While this brings a lot of cool items to ebay with great descriptions (I sometimes use ebay descriptions for knowledge and research on products - not just buying)... it also brings people to eBay that really don't have enough time to dedicate to it. ebay is either an all or nothing business if you ask me. I find that the people that the people that do it in their spare time poorly pack things, overcharge for shipping (making up wild excuses for the shipping and handling charges), and often don't respond when issues or questions arise.
I have also noticed that some items seem to be "from work" and may be "lifted" "from work" - particularly cables and routing equipment.
The MSNBC article that is linked on the ZAP site say $12,000 for the basic model and up to $20,000 for the convertible with all the options.
There are a few posts here talking about support too, saying the Honda Insight is a better purchase because of proven track record. The Insight is battery electric that needs to be completely replaced after 6 years, it also is a VERY expensive car $36,000 for what you get.
This vehicle will most likely be serviced at Mercedes or Chrysler dealerships and runs on ordinary gas.
The surprising thing is this gets as good a gas mileage as the Honda Insight 60MPH - and may be safer and better for the environment.
Say Apple meets it's best estimate of 4 million iPods this quarter. 15 million PCs are sold each quarter - so 7% of iPod users switching is right at 3.5% - whatta you know, Apple's marketshare is right about 3.5% (Quarterly)
Apple's marketshare is increasing [IMHO] because:
- Stores - Clean stores - More stores - No handwritten signs, no gimmicky sales - People are honestly seeking alternatives to Microsoft - Linuxheads are finding that the MacOS is just as powerful - Community/Grassroots support - Artist bandwagoning / idol worship
The interesting thing is Slashdot seems to be the #1 place (that I have seen) that readers regularly bash SPAM, but that also participate in one of the the MOST MASSIVE email campaigns I have ever seen - the FREE iPOD DEALS.
Look in just about any thread here on slashdot - you'll see a dozen signatures with people linking to THEIR free iPod link so they can get their required 5 people to join.
What happen is your email is INSTANTLY sold to OptInRealBig when you sign up for this page. OptInRealBIg in turn - is also a harvester - but they can legitimately prove they buy email addresses. So, if quetioned by novice understanding authorities - they can prove they are legit.
Point is - the very people that complain about it [slashdotters] - as far as I can see - are the main contributors to it.
People also fall for these emails from websites like wotch.com that have little funny flash cartoons. People forward these sites to dozens of their friends - which in turn - each of those emails are harvested.
It kinda is like the election scenario - the people that complained the most either didn't vote or couldn't vote!
I have been doing a little tracking down of a Spammer myself from my state.
A few months back, when the free iPod craze started - a company in my state started sending out emails from:
Product Test Panel Consumer Research Corporation Subscriberbase.com
Saying, "Product Testers Wanted". They would go from hot product to hot product. Sometimes, not even released products - like the Nintendo DS was advertised almost 2 months ago - claiming immediate shipment.
I found that they were in my state by reading the actual email and seeing a location in my state and then by confirming it with whois information.
I then sent off an email to the contact. I got an email from a guy named Brian Benehaley. In typical fashion, all of my accusations were denied.
Turns out, if you Google this guy's name - he has written a well respected piece [respected amongst bulk emailers] about how the Can Spam Act will bring a new renaissance in email marketing.
I have since written the Better Business Bureau about him, found the record for the company is now in the 1000's of complaints
I have contacted my state attorney general which is conducting thorough investigation
I contacted the host ISP - Exodus - they have over 12000 complaints lodged against Subscriberbase.com
This is the most uninformed post I have read all day.
Race is based in DNA.
By blood sample alone I can tell the race of the person it came from.
DNA is not just the common thread between us, it is the fiber of the individual as well.
In that sample will most likely be disease evidence or potential, eye color, and blood type distinctions that are all common to certain races. Few African origin races have blue eyes for instance.
It is actually quite easy to attain someone's race from a good DNA sample. (Easy to the qualified researcher that is)
But before you say stuff like that, you should know that BMW makes cars here - Space shuttle tiles are made here - more advanced research than MIT of Robotics goes on here - human skin was recently printed with a standard HP printer here - and we have the lowest gas prices in the country (currently $1.64 at the low end) - So there:P
"start condiering South Carolinians to be humans in the first place?"
And at least we can spell. I imagine you meant "considering"
And that's because what the article fails to mention is that the message was SOLELY AIMED at people in charge for intimidation purposes. Few, if any, "soldiers in the Iraqi" army saw the message or were made aware of it.
The purpose of the mesaage (IMHO) was also to trace a few of these higher ups to see where they were.
Do you remember the deck of cards? Saddam was the Ace of Spades, etc etc. Well, I'm sure this email was sent to that whole "deck of people" - and I'm sure it served a minute amount to find those people.
The article has nothing to do with how spammers can send email if they have Premium accounts.
I have a premium yahoo account. I was pleased yesterday to find it had jumped to 2GB of storage and the attachment size had jumped from 5MB to 25MB.
The other thing I noticed though is that you can only send to 10 recipients at a time and it won't send ANY email if one of those addresses is an invalid email account or is even port blocked.
I tested this out several times yesterday.
I do believe you are correct that this is a push towards revenue for Yahoo.
Think about it:
The more space that is available, the less they have to deal with their #4 customer complaint - my inbox is full and bouncing email!
Also, Yahoo cleverly markets to you eventhough they say they don't sell your email address. Bulk lists of users are available to most anyone by making a bot to find yahoo domain email addresses. For instance; find all email addresses that begin with "a" and end with "@yahoo.com" (That finds me) - guess who makes and sells a tool that can do that? (Psst...yahoo)
But occasionally, there is a song on a CD that is a hidden gem, that may be better than any song on the entire album.
A good example "Disturbance At The Heron House" by R.E.M. and less of an example "I Feel Free" ~ Belinda Carlisle off of her Summer Rain album which was a flop.
By downloading the singles you may not get a chance to hear to some really good music too.
Eventhough, I would agree, the majority of tracks are bad and not worth the $12.
Great story, but not a "how to be a success" story

The Real Story of Audion

· Score: 2, Interesting
This story was one of the best I have read in recent memory.
That said, I hate it when great programmers just sit on a product and stop innovating or coming up with new directions to take their product.
In my opinion, Panic should try to become something like Pixo and create great Mac friendly interfaces for Mp3 portable players or work with Napster and Real, and Microsoft to produce a player that will play secure WMP files well on a Mac.
My preference was always towards SoundJam over Audion, but still after SoundJam became iTunes - I leaned towards Audion for the custom skins.
I was somewhat depressed the other day when I was in Atlanta at Lennox Mall to see that they had ripped the electric car chargers out of the stations and said:
No longer available
Will this also happen to this gas station when the "fad" is over for these hybrid vehicles?
Just because someone is registered Democrat does not mean they have to vote Democrat.
I would consider myself a very conservative Republican - yet I voted for Clinton in 1992 and 1996. As he was the right man for the time.
Also, what about the several hundred dogs that voted Democrat in Ohio, yes, dogs, as in Chows and Great Danes - they all voted Democrat. There were also a lot of dead people that voted Democrat in this election.
Look, however you hash it and whichever candidate cheated, you aren't going to find 3 million+ votes!!!
SLASHDOT HAS YET TO MENTION that Kerry cheated during the first debate - and that researching and enhancing the video would have been a great geek topic.
Further, I would like to add that Democrat Poll watchers in my area are under investigation for calling Republican voters and harassing them - I'm one they have harassed.
Because I did not like the unopposed candidate that was running for register of deeds - I had all my friends (47 total) vote for me - two of them have been called and told they were undermining our democracy by voting for me.
I know that Apple LCD displays are supposedly Samsung/Philips made.
Other posts have indicated that Philips has the "zero dead policy" as well.
I wonder if this applies to the pixels in an OEM display - say LCDs sold to Apple for laptops and Cinema Displays.
what Initech handles?
Yeahhhhhh! Mmmmmmkay!
Did you get that memo?

No error correction needed.
The dips in stock and sales around July of each year and December/early Jabnuary would tell a different tale.
