2. All websites looked different and ugly as sin, because the package didn't come with the fonts that every other system used. Come on!
ubuntu-restricted-extras is rather easy to install.
Because when I think of "fonts" the first package name that comes to mind is "restricted extras."
The average home user who isn't a "hobbyist" or "enthusiast" or whatever they're calling us geeks nowadays doesn't give a shit about Ubuntu/Debian/GNU's (or is that GNUbuntu? I'd have to ask Stallman) ideological stances about purity and the evils of proprietary code. They want their video card to work. They want an operating system that will replace the headaches they get working with Windows, not a new religion. There's no convincing reason an OS that claims to want to appeal to the average user shouldn't install these things by default.
How is that intuitive? "Just working" when you insert a CD is that it automatically plays your CD. Last I checked this was the default behavior and must be disabled. Casually click the disc and drag it to your library. Watch as iTunes rips it without asking you any annoying questions. It just works. The problem is that you think ripping a CD is the most intuitive behavior for software that is, primarily, a media PLAYER. I'm not an Apple fanboy-- I don't even own a Mac-- but this makes perfect sense to me. As for your wireless issue, no clue.
When you're using a prescription drug without a prescription, that's drug abuse. When you're using a drug in a way its not intended to be used, that's drug abuse. Let's not kid ourselves with name games here.
When you're using a drug in a way it's not intended, that's off-label use. When you're using a drug with a prescription, that's prescribed use. When you're using a drug without a prescription, that's illicit use. It is possible to abuse a drug even with a prescription, and it is possible to use a drug responsibly without one. I have, for example, used benzodiazepines for which I have no prescription to control anxiety. With no health insurance it's easily possible for buying the medicine on the street to be more cost effective than paying for a doctor's appointment, scheduling time off from work to go to the appointment (for which you won't be paid), and then paying outlandish prices for prescriptions, depending on the medication the doctor agrees to give you. And that's not to mention subjecting a person with anxiety to the harrowing process that is convincing your doctor that you need a controlled medication. I now have a prescription for anxiety, but I battled it in my own way for years because the thought of going to a doctor and being subjected to their suspicion was enough to put me into a panic attack. I realize that's irrational, but that's anxiety.
I'm glad your Adderall works for you, but I'm sorry that you can't accept that there are other people who can also benefit from the medication who, for one reason or another, do not have or want a prescription. It's not like ADD isn't real until a doctor tells you it is. It's worth remembering that drug regulation laws were not enacted because people were abusing drugs, but rather because drug companies were putting out tainted shit that killed people.
Hear hear. I actually clicked on this thread to post about my experience with hydergine, piracetam + lecithin + choline supplements, 5-HTP, etc. There's no doubt that these drugs are making a big impact for some people, but the results can be spotty. Finding the proper attack dose and then tapering to your needed dose of piracetam can take a little time, unless you're just one of those people it doesn't work for. The main thing with nootropics is taking the time to work out your stack, and figure out what doses work for you. I'm glad you've had such great experiences with hydergine, which is, in my opinion, a wonder drug.
A less-discussed topic is the use of currently illegal or semi-legal (ie: controlled substance analogue) drugs in a nootropic capacity. MDPV is a (currently) non-controlled stimulant active at the range of just a few milligrams for which I've read great results for nootropic use. Unfortunately it's also prone to abuse, so who knows how it'll last. I had some interesting results for anxiety and depression with low doses of methylenedioxymethcathinone (aka: MDMCat, Methylone, etc.) which is a beta-ketone analogue of MDMA (aka: Ecstasy). I've also read of good results using low (sub-hallucinogenic) doses of LSD and psilocybin for nootropic purposes. And then there are all the synthetic tryptamines-- iprocine, ipracetine, miprocin, psilacetine-- and some of the phenethylamines as well. These are mostly used for recreational purposes, but show promise for therapeutic use at low doses.
I think we're ultimately doomed on this one unless people wise up and throw off their preconceived notions, though. Even though LSD has proven useful in helping people overcome alcoholism, even though psilocybin has shown promise in helping people who suffer from cluster headaches, and even though MDMA has proven very effective in psychiatric counseling, these drugs are all classified by the US Government in Schedule I as having no recognized medical use.
The fact is that for every Albert Hoffman or Alexander Shulgin who pushes the boundaries of organic chemistry for the benefit of mankind, there is a Timothy Leary who pushes too far with their creations and ruins everything for people who would use them responsibly. We have been programmed in this country to believe that using a drug to expand your mind is unlawful and without any redeeming medical value. With the puritanical bastards we have running the FDA and the DEA, I'm amazed things like the -racetams and hydergine are even still legal.
To save anyone from having to look it up, parent is referring to the Due Process clause of the 14th Amendment, which has been interpreted as giving the several states the same responsibility for upholding the Bill of Rights as the federal government. The fact that school boards are not the federal government in no way diminishes their responsibilities under the First Amendment.
Because +1 Funny mods do not give karma. People will sometimes mod funny posts as interesting or insightful so the poster can get karma for their post.
And just to be on topic:...in much the same way that pirating can lead to legitimate sales that would not have happened otherwise.
It's ALWAYS the fucking video card or wireless adapter.
Every. Fucking. Time.
Or it's both! This coming from someone who tried installing Hardy Heron in a laptop with an nForce chipset. I had graphics issues, I had wifi issues (Atheros chipset), and-- the thing that finally made me give up-- I had sound issues. Apparently wanting to use your microphone port is out of the question!
I have to wonder if this will be gone tomorrow, and yet I can't resist the urge to stroke that sweet, sweet epeen. I could see this being great just for getting more people to metamod, but if it's just a joke it's a good one.
I've certainly noticed that having three tabs open with nothing but text and a few simple banners or inline jpgs causes it to use 1 gig of RAM... Sadly it seems the Firefox Memory Leak Days are back upon us, assuming they ever really went away.
I paid for GTA4 and it did not disappoint. It paid for Fallout 3 and it is still not disappointing. I did not pay for Spore, and it disappointed heavily. I saved 60 dollars that I would have wasted. People will pay for good games, which is why good games shatter sales records.
I had a professor who was a Shi'ite who relayed a story to me about going to lunch with a Sunni friend of his. He was eating a sandwich, and the friend remarked on how good it looked. The professor offered him a bite and the friend took it, and upon remarking on how good it was and asking what was on it, the professor replied; "Ham." The Sunni was not amused, but the Professor, being a Shi'ite, casually claimed that he was just observing Taqiyya to get by in the land of the infidels.
The whole thing was relayed to me in the amused tones of a "Catholic" who only goes to mass for Christmas and Easter, and really doesn't give a fuck if he eats beef on Fridays during Lent.
Educated "Muslims" are much like educated "Christians"-- their faith is a social exercise to identify with others of the same culture, but they probably find the finer points of their religion embarrassing and outdated, and may not even believe in a god.
It's the stupid Muslims and the stupid Christians that you have to watch out for...
But they all have a bunch of bullshit that they're going to use to fleece you out of your money and manipulate you into doing their bidding.
Hint: There is no God.
The District Courts are the lowest courts in the Commonwealth. They have limited jurisdiction, and typically deal with piddling misdemeanors or civil cases with low damages. How this even originated in District Court and not Circuit Court (the court of general jurisdiction over "real" cases) boggles my mind, but IANAL.
This would still have to get through the Kentucky Court of Appeals, as well as the Kentucky Supreme Court, and then there's always an appeal to The Supremes. Right now this is like a divorce court judge (which is what Kentucky District Court judges were until the recent-- read: last year-- establishment of the Kentucky Family Courts) ruling on international law, and I can't imagine it'll stand.
Also, I notice that a couple of domains have been changed to Secretary of Justice. This would be the head of the Justice and Public Safety Cabinet, which is responsible for the State Police. This should not be confused with the Attorney General, Jack Conway. He actually struck me as a level-headed, intelligent, reform-minded guy.
All that said, this is one more reason for me to be glad I moved out of that crazy place!
A very easy example: An easily frightened solider is walking in the woods. He hears something and is frightened, and immediately flinches. A bullet flies over his head, and he turns and returns fire, killing the enemey. A few miles away, another solider is walking. He is not easily frightened or startled. He hears something, and calmly turns his head in the direction of the sound. The bullet goes straight through his face, killing him.
Not counting a couple of exceptions, bullets tend to travel faster than the speed of sound. By the time your soldier had anything to hear, he would already be dead. This is why people say, "You never hear the one that gets you."
Paedophilia tends to imply that the children are prepubescent. Sexual attraction to jailbait is called Ephebophilia. Not enough people know this bit of vocabulary.
An "Agent" is someone who is a CIA contact in the field-- an asset. Actual employees and operatives of the CIA (what we think of being "Agents" in other government agencies) are referred to as Officers.
I heard a similar joke about Canada-- that it was to be a grand social experiment, with American technology, French food, and British culture. Instead they ended up with French technology, British food, and American culture.
Perhaps the Saudi legal system would be more to your liking than the American one then. In this country we supposedly value the rule of law, and believe that all men-- even murders, rapists, and other "scum"-- are created EQUAL.
Not long ago the media was reporting the story of a man, I believe in Texas, who was falsely convicted of rape and exonerated after some long (many years) period of time due to DNA technology. Should he have been beaten and raped himself in prison? Do you just say Oops and apologize when it turns out that person really wasn't guilty?
The true test of the Freedom of Speech is whether or not you believe it applies to people who disagree with you, and people who say horrible, deplorable things. Likewise, societies should be judged by how they treat the lowest among them, not by the smiley gladhanding you do with those you have deemed to be above the Untouchable caste.
Being forcibly removed from society and deprived of your freedom is the punishment. Being stripped of your dignity and sense of self-worth is the punishment. Being stripped of the rights you have as an American citizen is the punishment. These things are awful, but they are earned. I don't have a problem with that. However, if we are going to deprive people of their freedom and place them in confinement, we have certain responsibilities to see that they stay healthy, that they are fed, and that they have access to opportunities to better themselves so they won't have to be criminals if and when they get out of prison. That is justice.
I agree that, among a prison population, a certain degree of uncivilized, violent, disturbing behavior is probably inevitable. However, we have a responsibility to try to prevent it, seeing as it is as much a crime as-- say-- Hans's murdering his wife. Just because you do not like the victim doesn't mean we shouldn't try to prevent crimes. To say that criminals deserve to be beaten, or raped, or abused is no different than saying that some wives deserve to be killed, and some children deserve to be violated. In a society that claims to believe in justice and the rule of law, crime is crime REGARDLESS OF THE VICTIM.

According to John McCain, that's middle class.
1) My point was thatGrandpa's example was stupid.
2) You know nothing about my political persuasion.
3) There is also certainly a correlation between people who act like pompous assholes on Slashdot, and people whose opinion I don't give a fuck about.
