WMC to me was a waste of time considering all the great Linux based solutions out there.
How many of those "great Linux based solutions" support CableCard? I have TWC, and I want to be able to view and record programs. None of the Linux based solutions I looked at will support a CableCard-enabled tuner such as HDHomeRun Prime.
In music, there is something called a Shepard tone, which is a series of skillfully combined harmonics that, when listened to as a loop, appears to be constantly ascending.
Perhaps the "expanding universe" is something like that.
I would say that "reboot" can mean different things, in much the same way that "Zathras" can refer to more than one individual, depending on how you pronounce it:) There is the one you describe (change the story line / concepts), but I think it's also possible to simply retell the story, or perhaps tell "more of the story" (i.e. start a bit earlier in the arc, or give additional background). Our technology has changed a bit since 1994 (I mean, gad, we were still running Windows for Workgroups back then!) so it makes sense that we can better imagine the future from this perspective. I respect JMS and believe he would not tamper with the core precepts in the series. And while there are lots of faithful fans who remember the original series, there is also a huge audience of people who aren't familiar with the original series & would enjoy an excellent space opera.
... I imagined that someone discovered a mechanism in genes that favored survival if there were exactly two or three neighboring genes, and non-survival if there were fewer or greater numbers. Oh, and something about a new gene being 'created' when there are exactly 3 neighboring ones.
Okay, I will probably be modded down for this, but it's worth saying. And for the record, I'm opposed to needlessly killing animals.
The first time I heard about eagles being killed by windmills, I imagined one being cut down while flying from point A to point B, not noticing that there was this lethal windmill in its path. Then, I saw a video on a website of an actual eagle death by windmill (and I apologize for not being able to find & post the link here) and was very surprised bu what I saw. Basically, the eagle was "dancing" with the windmill, repeatedly flying around it over and over. Like a moth flying around a flame. Eventually, the two paths intercepted, and the eagle was hit by the blade.
So part of me wanted to scream "stupid eagle!" and make the natural selection comment. But maybe there is something hypnotic going on that makes the bird want to investigate this strange whirling object?
Maybe a solution to the problem isn't to grant power companies "permits" to kill eagles, but to find a way to repel them rather than attract them.
Sorry for the self-reply, but I had to mention this too:
"Life is autonomous self-reproduction with variations." (the final version from the article) clocks in at 53 characters, which is unfortunately one short of the correct total of 54 (which, of course, is what you get when you multiply 6 by 9, in base 10)

It seems to be a lot from the spreadsheet so I wonder how it gets in. What ingredient has all that cadmium?
Maybe they use recycled NiCd batteries?
The question was also posted to the Multivac, but as of this writing, there is insufficient data for a meaningful answer.

That funny sound the videocassette makes when you push it in the VCR, and the tape winds around the drum, and finally it starts playing.

I can't read a story about this probe without hearing Jerry Lewis screaming in my head.

I guess in multiverse #2, Isaac Asimov's story "The Last Question" would have been quite different.
Are you remembering this?

(I remember reading that Science & Mechanics article in the day.)

The toughest part is to make sure they don't scream as they destruct; the licensing fees would be too expensive.
Not to worry, there will probably be no one there to hear it, so it won't make any noise.
but will it be televised?
It will be televised, but no one will watch it live. They will DVR it so they can skip the commercials.

My wife won't let me.
Imagine there's no government.
It's easy if you try.
Does anybody really care?

Actually, it does, for large values of 1 and small values of 3.
D'oh, I really should read the post more carefully - I somehow missed the link to that article which was already present.
My apologies for the useless post (and this useless reply - which wouldn't be necessary if /. allowed me to delete my own comment.)

If you make it can you break it? IE. If you can 'make' energy this way then can you 'unmake' it?
If you break it, you bought it.

I didn't realize there was such a thing as an Asian swallow.
