Virtual Reality Experiment Wants To Put White People In Black Bodies

Molly McHugh (3774987) writes with an intriguing use of VR technology: "It's as simple as making a light-skinned person feel connected to a virtual, darker skinned self—a thought experiment pretty much impossible without the immersive potency of VR. The effect is achieved by outfitting participants in VR headsets with built-in head-tracking and motion capture capabilities that sync actual movement to virtual experience." From the article: Evolving from cruder methods, VR is a natural extension of research examining the ways that people think differently when made to feel like they are part of a meaningfully different social group, known as an outgroup. ... What’s most exciting about this channel of research is that it gets at the kind of complex, subtle prejudices that most people can’t even articulate if asked directly.

Anyone can be racist. Anyone. In fact, probably everyone is racist to a certain degree even if they try to not be. The biggest difference is that black people, already not only in the minority in the general population but in an even smaller minority in positions of authority, have a lot less capability to do harm to white people as a whole than white people, occupying the disproportionate majority of authority positions even relative to their majority-race status, can do to black people as a whole. If 50% of people in each race are racist in their attitudes and behaviors toward the other, and if the balance between white to black populations in authority is 80%:20%, then 40% of jobs (half of those with racist whites making decisions) are already off-the-table for blacks, while only 10% of jobs (half of thsoe with racist blacks making decisions) are off-the-table for whites. That's part of White Privilege, not having a large number of doors already closed simply because of race.

Barack Obama grew up in one of the few places in this country where race is much less of a factor. Hawaii's issues aren't black/white, they're native/migrant in nature, with the natives coming up on the short end of the stick, but with so many natives compared to settlers plus the massive tourism industry, it's less pronounced. A mixed-race child of African and European ancestry will blend in a lot better in Hawaii as the playing field is a lot more level there to start with. Maybe that had something to do with his mindset, and why he was able to succeed further than any other 'black' politician has, he is not a descendant of the legacy of slavery, and he did not start out pre-judged to the same extent that most black people in the continental United States are.

I do have black coworkers and have had black coworkers throughout the years. I've had Asian coworkers. I've had Hispanic coworkers. I've had Indian coworkers, of both definitions of Indian. For example, black men are often of masculine physique, athletic, attractive to chicks, well hung. Some women actively seek out black men and avoid whites due to skin color or other inherited traits. Often, blacks don't earn the physique, virility, being more musical or being personable, but inherit it or absorb it as part of their background. If you see music clips, there is also a strong promotion of the gangsta culture, with the black indifferent casually-looking underdressed peacocking person, who in style, lyrics and sometimes personal life, embodies or idolizes a criminal, and makes overt references to his private parts, is surrounded by an enthusiastic girl crowd.

I've seen some of the most beautiful girls I've ever seen, hanging out with black guys. Some women, I hear, also display their preference for blacks with an ace of spade tattooed on them, and depending on locale, there is also sexual tourism (e.g. visiting a multicultural borough to meet brothas).

So yes, with lesser emphasis on material needs, and a growing emphasis in areas where blacks do well (masculinity, being fun characters, rap/gangsta idolization, approachability or ever-eagerness to meet new women) I'd say not only that being black has benefits also, but that these benefits may, depending on individual circumstance, well outweigh the drawbacks, being a more significant contributor to a man's quality of life.

And the girl aspect is just one, although perhaps most important benefit. I hear another factor is that if a white guy commits a crime in the US and gets jailed, he has a good likelihood to get raped by black inmates. Then there are a lot of competitive sports that are dominated by blacks.

Btw if you don't like the fact that I bring up points that are relevant, even if it's not about 'economic status' or 'voting power' but more down to earth factors such as success with girls, don't assume that I don't meet women, or that I only date girls of my own race, or I'm rich or poor or WASP or just a foreigner or racist or anti-racist.

Here's a really helpful note for the /.ers who are having a hard time comprehending that you can possess white privilege while being discriminated against yourself in other ways:

If people talk about privilege, it's not just one spectrum, it's a whole interaction of power structures. That is to say, white privilege exists within a system where the majority of people are white, and you enjoy a majority privilege. You could call it "majority" privilege if you want.

If you've worked at a place where you're the only white person, you may feel discriminated against but it's good to remember that it's just within that microcosm - you're still safe and accepted within the larger society outside. In fact, it's that larger society and the polarizing majority that often makes minorities exclusive of other ethnicities, or react in ways that might seem bigoted in turn. That's just group polarization at work.

Just because you're white doesn't mean that you don't also suffer if you're poor, disabled, unconventionally attractive, overweight, gay, or any other number of factors, it just means that you have a certain set of privileges because you're white. Things like being able to see yourself represented positively in most media, or not being 'othered'. Basically, white is the default in our society.

If somebody says you have "white privilege", they don't mean you're inherently racist unless they're stupid and don't understand what privilege means.

Being racist is to hold prejudices, stereotype people, and practice discrimination.

Is somebody calling you a racist? Check down this list:

    1. Do I have a prejudice against the group in question?
    2. Am I displaying stereotyped or overgeneralized thinking?
    3. Do I engage in practices or actions that are discriminatory, or designed to suppress opportunity or access?

If the answers to these are no, you likely aren't racist, good job! Shrug it off, feel comfortable in yourself. If you're uncertain or defensive on any of those points, rethink your ideas or do a little bit of "opposition" research. If you're sure of yourself, it doesn't hurt to see what the other side has to say. You might learn a bit.

However, just because you're not racist doesn't mean that the system doesn't benefit you.

The system generally does benefit you! On the macrocosmic scale, at least. If you don't want to be told you have white privilege? Work to change the system, and that doesn't mean subjugating yourself or anything ridiculous like that. It's eliminating those three factors above in society - stereotypes, prejudices, and discrimination.

You go along on the free ride to the cop shop and resolve it there (if it even goes that far - often the situation can be resolved by an honest calm conversation at the scene if there has been no other criminal activity). The guy in Missouri had just robbed a store and was walking down the middle of the street with his stolen goods and his accomplice, and then stupidly confronted the cop (probably because he knew he'd be ID'd and arrested for his ROBBERY). The guy in NYC was selling untaxed cigarettes (a MAJOR crime in a Democrat run high-tax locale) and he resisted arrest. Had he simply peacefully gone with the cops, he'd be alive today. You do not have the right to fight against the cops and resist arrest; "resisting arrest" is an additional offense.
