  1. If you have to use software... on Open Source Math Software For Education? · · Score: 1

...why not take advantage of the numerous and generous educational discounts available to teachers and students? That way you get manuals and support, and the instructor doesn't have to waste time on configuration, installation, or troubleshooting. Why does it have to be open source? Is she (your friend) worried about bad math being put in or is she going to extend the software in some way?

  2. Re:Taking it back on Firefox Reaches 10 Million Downloads · · Score: 1

So you have a plus with mbox as being portable, human readable, and 'repairable' with a text editor the con of being slow with large files.

In the 11+ years I've been using e-mail on Windows and Unix systems I've never to read or repair a mailbox with a text editor (or any other tool). Considering t-bird is aimed at the masses I don't think having a text-editable mailbox is an advantage anyway. The target audience (if the goal is to replace OE) does not have the skills or desire to make such repairs in the rare case of a failure.

The focus should be on the user experience as that's what will increase the install base, not features for geeks. Slap on a proprietary database for speed and feature enhancements and people will be happier.

300 baud was great. I could read at 300 baud so screens would load at the perfect rate. Fortunately I was poor at the time so I couldn't spend too much time trying to download pictures from Rusty n Edie's BBS.

I even ran my own single line bbs on an Atari 800. Nothing but text files, really, mostly discussion of text adventure games. The Wolves Den, though that entry is wrong as it was in San Leandro and ran software I wrote myself.

Those were the days...if I knew then what I knew now I'd buy a lot of Microsoft stock.

  8. I stand alone on Mel Brooks Says 'Spaceballs' Sequel In The Works · · Score: 1

I've been conducting an informal survey over the years and I seem to be alone in my opinion that Spaceballs is horrible. It's second only to Mad Dog and Glory in the "worst movie ever" category. It wasn't funny; it was just stupid. I saw it in college after an evening of pizza and beer...just not funny. I like other Mel Brooks' movies. I like other movies that are funny: Army of Darkness. Animal House. Vacation. Caddyshack. Holy Grail. Life of Brian. Princess Bride.

I for one do not welcome our Spaceballs-sequel-making overlords.

  9. My time is valuable on Real Presidential Debates · · Score: 0

Why would I waste it listening to two non-contenders? I would rather spend that time listening to the debates, then checking the facts as presented by the candidates. I don't consider the debates to be a "press conferencene" - that's what the conventions are for.

By the way, my question is legitimate. What do I have to gain from two unknown non-players telling me what they want me to hear? I can find that information and more quite easily; you see, I have the Internet installed on my computer. Gaining knowledge of your agenda won't help me decide how to vote. I already know what issues are important. I now have to decide who (between the 2 people that have a chance of being elected) comes closest to my views.

  13. SanDisk CruzerLock software on Lexar JumpDrive Password Scheme Cracked · · Score: 1

My SanDisk came with "CruzerLock" software. I wrote the company some time ago and they couldn't tell me about the encryption used. Now a search turns up a page by the authoring company on the software. Here's what they say about the algorithm:

The CruzerLock(TM) 2 software uses the powerful and fast Blowfish encryption algorithm with a 448-bit key length. Blowfish is a symmetric block cipher that has been analyzed considerably and approved by the United States government. It was a finalist in the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) competition.

I wonder if the software has the same flaws as the JumpDrive software. You can download the software here, though I don't know if it will work with non-SanDisk drives.

  23. As a Lockheed employee... on Lockheed Replaces 10,000 Solaris Seats with Linux · · Score: 5, Informative

I can say that MS isn't going away anytime soon. Not only (in my particular division) does Exchange run the back end, but our engineers have integrated the authentication across the board. Want to check your pay stub online? Use your exchange domain\username and password. Want to check your training records? Ditto. Check the status of a referred employee? Ditto. Change health care coverage? Ditto. Pretty much the only thing that doesn't require that login is access to the 401k/pension site.

The division I'm in is heavily involved in software development for the government. Sun gets a lot of the business here because of the massive data storage requirements we have. 10's of terabytes is not an uncommon need. The government is also pushing towards more COTS solutions so until there are ready-to-deploy applications on Linux, Sun will still be around. Unfortunately, ready-to-deploy doesn't mean easy-to-deploy. My current project is a nightmare of integration...but that's a story for another day...
