"News for Nerds", sure, but Trek nerds will already know about this. Others won't care about a boxed Star Trek set.
It seems to me that something like "Friends - season 1" boxed set would be more appropriate. It shows people with knowledge of hygiene dressing nicely and having normal relationships. Very useful information for nerds.
Or how about when the latest "Girls Gone Wild" dvd is released? After all, man does not whack to jpgs alone...

Say what you will about Windows but at least it's a standard to work against. With Linux it seems there always some pertpetual tinkering...enough already! Enough tool building, now make some apps.
Look how many freeware and shareware files are available for Windows. Sure, they're not open source but a lot of people are still writing apps for Windows. For example, go to hotfiles.com and search for "word processor". Quite a few choices. For Linux, you've got...AbiWord, Maxwell, WordPerfect, StarOffice/OpenOffice.
The point of all this is that most people don't care what's the newest/greatest/most different way of doing something. They just want something that turns on and works. So don't think about replacing X, think about making more applications for the end user.
I had a submission accepted (*once*, but I digress). I included a link to my website. As expected, traffic went up. A review of the logs showed the majority (like 80%) of those referred to the site from slashdot were using Windows, with the majority of those using XP (interesting, as usually most of my visitors are using Me).
This doesn't answer why, but I found the results amusing considering the anti-ms vitriol found here.
Douglas Adams, on the other hand, rocks. Or rocked. What a waste of talent, writing a Dr Who episode. I guess when you only have 3 channels to choose from you'll watch anything. If I had to choose I'd rather see a Douglas Adams "Prisoner" episode. But I don't get to choose, so it's time to move on to the next article.
Also note that it will make millions and millions of dollars anyway.
So it must be ok! Thanks Taco...I think I'll put up a/. mirror but with my own advertisers. I know you won't mind if I take your work and profit from it.
Heh, in a way, I'm already doing the equivalent of p2p trading wrt slashdot. I'm running The Proxomitron which wipes out all the ads. So I'm benefiting from your work without making you any money.
Now here comes the part where all the Taco lovers mod me down without considering the point I'm trying to make...
Ah, the utopia expressed in that old Coke commercial rears its head here.
Free as in they have not sold their souls (not to mention music rights) away to the devils of the music industry.
It seems those "devils" have made rich people of a number of musicians. If those musicians aren't trying to change the system, why are you? Translation: it can't be that bad if the old hands (Stones, Petty, that folk chick that had an article in USA Today, heck, even McCartney) haven't risen up and thrown off the shackles of the master's contract. I'm quite sure that as onerous as the contracts may be, not a single one says "for life".
"Damnit, I didn't run Ethernet into the family room so that we could buy a box that uses a @$%^ing serial modem."
Yeah, I know what you mean. I've got ethernet in bedrooms and the dining room (currently my wife's office - with small kids the need for a formal dining room is lessened). Cable is dirt cheap if you buy it at Home Depot and add the plugs yourself (once you buy that $30 crimping tool)...
And isn't TiVO more "hackable"? A coworker is always telling me about the things he's added to his TiVO.
Interesting. I didn't know that. I took a look at the service agreement which reads, "Thus, any service that is activated through the one-time, up front subscription fee follows the ReplayTV unit and not the person." On the bright side, if you want to trade up it certainly increases the resale value of the unit.
Kudos to your wife for the research (I know you're the husband because no wife would ever refer to her hub as a "spousal overunit"). When is your "shootout" web page going up?
A note for the paranoid:
Though tangle keeps track of web usage patterns, the focus is not on tracking the habits of individual users, but on tracking the trends of an entire community of users. tangle is GPL'd open source [source here], so you can see for yourself...
Yes, but since this runs on the server, how do I know you're really running the source that's available?.
Or maybe I'm worrying too much, and the check really is in the mail, my information really won't be sold to 3rd parties, that really does happen to all guys at one time or another, and it's not me, it's you.
Look Zigfried...it's a joke. See, it's supposed to be all about security, yet the password is stored in plain text in the "sample". Didn't you like the part about "display" being a bunch of *'s?
I thought it was funny that the post was modded informative - I think it's hilarious that you took it so serious! Here's another xml snippet for you:
I enclosed the block with ecode tags and the system added it on. I'm open to suggestions on how to better display posts containing xml to be displayed. I guess I should have tried plain old text or code...
Basically you want a site/service you've authenticated with to authenticate you with other sites, so the spec lays out how this should be done. From the RFC (just a snippet):

Biz dev and sales are quite different. Think strategy (biz dev) vs tactics (sales). Business development, well, develops new business. New markets, possibly new products, new partnerships. Sales executes, possibly getting into new markets but not on the level of biz dev.
Brilliant! I'm forwarding on your instructions to my 75 year old mother...she's been wanting a TiVo.

Thanks for your support. We are currently in the process of setting up the Group Defense and the PANIP Group Defense Fund. We hope to have it set up by the end of this week giving people a chance to contribute online through a PayPal account. The response has been very encouraging.
Stay tuned in and help us spread the word. PANIP thought they could extort money from small businesses without them making much noise. They were wrong.
I'll also pick up some chocolates for my wife at their site...that way I can help their business and score some points with the bride at the same time. Double bonus!
