yes, and that's why Hamilton didn't want to include one. We have our rights as humans. In fact they are part of what makes us human. The government can't take our rights away. It may stop us from expressing them, but it can't take them away. The constitution doesn't say "You have these rights, and don't have these". Its just a framework for the government to operate without stepping on the toes of your rights. Of course, the role of SCOTUS is to define when this is happening, using the constitution as a guideline. I wouldn't say that the SCOTUS makes law it simply codifies the guidelines that laws are made under.

Yes and significantly raise the cost of information to make an informed choice. I don't know currently where the policy initiative comes from, the pols or the public, but party affiliation has certain advantages that are nigh on necessary for representative democracy to function.

For example, if I point out a candidate, who is Republican, the majority of people have a general sense of where that candidate stands on a variety of issues. The same stands for democrats, and for the better informed the third parties. If Bob Johnson came up and said he was running for congress, where does Bob stand? And if you were standing in the ballot booth in November, and saw his name and a list of others, how would you differentiate? yes, if you knew about him before hand, but what about the minor parties? (who currently have this problem) I personally think this is the most important role of parties.

Of course, in the US, party affiliation is a very loosely binding label. There are many on either party that ideologically fall closer to the opposing party than their own. This number has been shrinking over the last decade or so, but some holdouts remain. So really, unless you're totally uninformed, you're forced to decide on each candidate on their merits anyway.

Oh, and party isn't on the ballot everywhere, this would have the same effect as your system without eliminating the easy access to information the parties represent.

  4. Re:Well i for one on Nader Off Virginia Ballot · · Score: 1

You're right for the most part, but the party system in the US is very weak compared with the rest of the world. Party leadership has some control over its members, but the party will never be able to trump any given member's constituency. Just won't happen. The desire to be reelected will always be forefront in a politician's mind.

I think part of this perception of strong parties is that the US has been coalescing closer to each party's ideological means. The poles of the electorate are shifting, away from a single humped bell curve, toward 2, one slightly left of center, and another right of center. So, while it might seem that the party's are running things, constituency effects are pulling pols closer to the party positions. Now where this shift in the electorate is coming from is debatable. I haven't seen conclusive evidence of any one source. It could be that the party's are shifting and voters are then moving their preferences toward the parties. The converse could be true, the parties following the people. it'd be interesting to know though.

Yes, and that's the point that everybody crying about Bush and his policy fail to realize. At its absolute worst, Bush will only be in office for 8 years. Max, can't run again. Not to mention, that Congress is close enough right now, that the democrats have a good amount of control still, especially in the Senate. We've seen waves of stuff like this going back all the way. Hell, in 1789, Congress passed a law that said you couldn't say anything bad about the government! The sedition act of 1789, was passed and sunseted (is that a word?) in 1801. And I'm not saying that nothing bad happens now because of the actions of the Bush administration, but 224 years is a long tim, and this isn't the first time that anything like this has happened. And you know what? It won't be the last. The beauty of the american system is that we can screw up and the ill effects won't harm us incredibly much. Whatever goes wrong, can be changed. Its happened throughout American history. Now again, I'm not saying we should rest on our laurels, in fact, not resting on our laurels is why we're able to correct our mistakes. When the people see that something doesn't work, they have to change it. And this is where the real power in American government comes from, the people. Don't like something get it changed, go out and do something. Give money, volunteer, write your congresspeople, VOTE. Whatever, but the system doesn't work (well it does work, but you have to make it work for you) if you're not doing something. Whee, I've ranted enough. But the point remains, go and do something, don't post on slashdot how Bush is a nazi and we'll all get the mark of the beast or something. The system is there. It was designed for us to use, and if you want to stop and/or prevent abuses of it, get involved.

    Yeech, red herrings abound.

Which can be mapped into a pop-up window at screenside, no?

Yes, but this amazingly enough takes up screen space. I am given to believe that mucking with inventory is a common enough occurrence, that obscuring a portion of the screen because of one or all players, would retard the game play to the point of being unplayable. Yes, it could all be done on screen, but this allows everyone to do as they wish without interfering with the game-play of others, as the on-screen display could.

If Nintendo keeps attacking flash cart vendors, what geek would be able to buy one in order to use a GBA as a music player or PDA? They'd buy an iPaq or Zaurus PDA instead.

your statement assumes that all geeks want all their devices to play music. The grandparent mentions nothing of this (although, he assumes that love of video games == geek). Therefore, your argument is invalid against his. I'm not arguing that all geeks should have GBAs nor that having a GBA makes one a geek, but your argument has nothing to do with his.

Blame Nintendo for making the most expensive current console now that the PS2 is down to $150 and a GCN + GBA with non-defective display + cable is $210?

Here, you assume that to play all games, one simply needs a PS2 or a GCN, GBA and the cable. To play the majority of games, one does not need all these things. One simply requires a PS2 or a GCN. One could make the same argument of Sony of requiring the network adapter to play online, that raises the price of the PS2 up to $200, which is much closer than your stated price (not to mention that the $149 price went into effect today) or the requirement of a multi-tap for more than 2 players on the PS2. This is also neglecting the purchase of a game, which (depending on one's requirements, may or may not have the extra associated costs above.)

I will concede the point that in absolute terms, to play Final Fantasy Chronicles (the only game currently released that requires multiple GBAs for multiplayer), the Gamecube is the most expensive system.

Well really, that's what Sony's done with the Playstation market. Granted they aren't giving the SDK away for free, but the vast majority of games released for the PS1 (the PS2 isn't quite as bad, but it still exists) were crap, with a license or something that nobody should have bought. But it allowed Sony to say with the PS2 "and you can play the 600 games for the PS1". Granted of those 600 maybe 150 were worth owning, but its all marketing. Sony's going to have a tough time with the PSP if only because they're in the middle of a generation (I don't think nintendo's going to rob peter to pay paul with the DS stealing market share from the GBA). This is why the xbox and gamecube aren't near where the PS2 is. If all three had launched the same day, current standings would be very different. Of course, its kind of pointless to speculate on this since none of them have a firm release date yet.

I'm gonna say 9 cause I seem too remember that being about the price when I was in DC last year. So if a movie is 2 hours long, you're paying $4.50 per hour, and you get 5 different enjoyable experiences instead of one for the game.

Anyway, its just a thought. I haven't payed $50 for a game in years. The most I've payed in recent memory was $35 for Soul Caliber for the Dreamcast, but that was 2 years ago, and nothing's been more than that since. And I don't even buy many used games. Unless you're the type of person that has to have it the day it comes out, there's no reason to drop that much cash on a game, give it two or three months, and it'll go down a little. I'm still waiting on Fzero GX and Viewtiful Joe to get down to $20. Hmm, maybe I should go check on them ;)

If an advanced player did that, the beginners would never play, why should the beginners and/or those of little skill be allowed to use it against the advanced players?
