Is this a buffer overflow? Is it insert of code? Or, is it just access? Ummm... since this is just the details of HOW... well, if its used then the code behind the exploit could make more than the infected machine vulnerable, and so, ALL WORD docs could be compromised shortly... it IS possible, until the patch comes out. But, then it won't be available to those pirates so it will spread anyway as the computers they've upgraded become infected... *grin*... tx microsoft. :P

Don't let us outta the gravity well, the species has no concept of altruism.

I AM a 911 operator and have to say that the ONLY advantage may be location of the caller and that would have to use the mac address of the modem and access to the ISP's database to make it viable. Now, maybe there are a small number of handicapped who use their computers more than the phone who would benefit, but as a microsoft PRODUCT? That scares me.The monies available (which I'm sure are shrinking these days) should NOT be put into NEW technologies but into perfecting the existing systems and adding GPS tracking of cell phones, and finalizing revamps of local emergency systems now in place so calls for service are handled quicker and more efficiently. Now, if a new computer driven system CAN be proved viable.. all is good, but it should NOT be patented by a corporation who could in later years decide to provide emergency services by paid contracts. And lastly, centering attention on a computer (and thereby internet driven) solution leaves out those who do NOT have internet and the required OS.

This makes me think of humanity-as-virus and the need to find fresh hosts to perpetuate the species. Could this 'will to explore' also be an instinctive trait within the viral forms we fight daily here within our own bodies? We consume natural resources and so far, NOT to the benefit of the host. Is this not the actions of a virus? Though I admit that to go to the stars has been a deep and obsessive wish of mine, I am also concerned about allowing such a dangerous life-form to escape the gravity-well. Being self-aware does not mean we have carte-blanche to infect the solar system and then the galaxy. A self-aware virus would inherently view its own perpetuation as a good and natural progression, regardless of the actual outcome of its spread.
