I'm pretty sure that Cosmic Cat has updated the Firesomething extension. I run Firefox 1.0.5 on Linux, and it was working as of this morning. Back in the 1.0.3 days it was necessary to hack the versioning to work with 1.0.x but about a month or so ago it autoupdated to my intense surprise. Can't speak for 1.0.6 as I'll wait for the Slack package before upgrading

Indeed, If the advertiser's own sites get blocked, either by adblock, or modified hosts files, an easy solution would be to put the ads directly on the sponsored site rather than being externally linked. A little more work, perhaps, and possibly open to abuse, but potentially very difficult to block.
I was aware that one of the fixes was as simple as better tires, which were already available BEFORE the accident, even recommended in light of the earlier instances, but not done due to the greater costs. The plane in question did not have the reinforced tires, but there still remained the question of the vulnerability of the fuel tanks to debris punctures.
Actually it WAS a problem with the Concorde. Apparently there were 9 or so other incidences of debris causing damages to the undercarriage including another impact on the fuel tanks, fortunately in that case the tank didn't rupture. One of the motives for the retirement of the Concorde was the cost of correcting this vulnerability.
True about the music industry in Brasil, its difficult to get foreign releases, and even Brasilian music that falls outside the norms. I only discovered Sapatos Bicolores, for instance, via the internet. On the other hand I find a better selection of films on broadcast television here than I did back when I lived near the US/Canada border and had access to over 13 channels over the air. This may be due to the fact the movie industry in Brasil is nearly nonexistent, with the occasional notable exception (eg. Cidade de Deus). But if I want to see Firefly, the new Battlestar Galactica, or any other foreign TV, I'm pretty much SOL without resorting to P2P. The only serials to interest me that showed up here were Buffy, and Smallville (but only up to the second season). What's even worse, the plague of so-called reality shows exists even here.
With respect to technologies like the broadcast flag, it's largely a non-issue here, not many people tape the novellas, though I'd imagine that applying it to a World Cup game would result in wide-scale violence.
I welcome the news, but I'm still suspicious of the motives. I currently am stuck with an onboard
VIA KM400 based video after my old MX440 blew up taking out the AGP slot in my old motherboard. I've been using the OSS Unichrome drivers http://unichrome.sourceforge.net/ as VIA's own drivers had a limited selection of distros and kernels.
The current config here is a 2.4.30 kernel with the r30 Unichrome release, Mesa and DRI from CVS and X.Org 6.8.2 I had to hack in the AGP support from a patch designed for an older kernel, as the chipset isnt supported in the main branch. Most everything works well enough, The Goom plugin for XMMS is ok, though Lemuria is dog slow. Q3Arena works as well as on Windows or better, NWN works better. There are a few issues with the Privateer remake http://priv.solsector.net/ and with UT200x that remain to be fixed. I'm hoping that the crew working on the Unichrome project can fill in the missing pieces now with the source available, as there has been a constant struggle to get necessary information from VIA
I wonder if this soft tissue will give us some clues about the metabolism of T-Rex, namely will it reveal whether it was warm or cold blooded, or something in between. I must admit this is surprising news.
While that may be true for the vast majority of the population, it's an insult to the minority who will tinker with the code of the OSS they are exposed to, get a taste for it, and go on to develop a home-grown software industry as a result.
Or more probably, given the lack of opportunities
start a defacing group like the Crime Boyz, write hacking tools like Senna Spy, or just rob banks like the Mafia do Cartão.
Seriously there are quite a few talented people here in Brasil, and most of them aren't black hats. Any incentive to help lower the costs of digital inclusion will certainly have long term benefits. With the high prices of (legitimate)* commercial software and development packages, especially in light of the low per-capita income, using a free alternative is the obvious choice. Reducing the absurd import duties on computer equipment would probably be another good step.**
*pirate copies are widely available in urban centres for R$5 or so
**aside from grey market importers & Paraguay prices of equipment here are almost double US price (has been getting better lately)
Unfortunately what's been happening is a lot of the early adopters got burned by developing Linux support - and now have to face their distributors. Seems the people actually programming don't mind doing Linux, but the PHBs giving the orders want to make money, any there still isn't any to be had in supporting Linux. Bioware's NWN has a Linux version (they used openGL) NWN 2 will be using Directecchs, a Linux version will probably not happen.
As an aside - I bought NWN a few months back because it supported Linux. I finished it (in Windows) long before my video (on-board Via) had working Linux drivers available. Only the latest Unichrome release -r30 released last Friday is capable of running the game (props again to Ivor,Thomas and the rest of the Unichrome crew for their continuing hard work despite VIA's so-called support). Incidently I get better framerates under Linux now:)
I live in Brasil as well (Parauapebas PA, known for mining and phishing scams) - I'm quite a ways from the major centres. Food expenses here are probably higher in some aspects here than in the capitals, lower in other (farmer's markets etc.) If I eat at a middle of the road per-kilo place here, food is R$ 17/kilo (independent of type:veggies/meat/fruit all same) As humassa, I usually eat about 400-500g and a soft drink, so it ends up R$ 8.50+1.50= r$10 or about 3.30 US This is not subsidized A better restaurant here has dishes at around R$20 to r$40 = U$ 6.50 to u$13 (one dish usually serves two people with some leftovers). There are no really good restaurants here... A take out pizza and a 2l pop runs r$ 20, though I much prefer my wife's pizza (I taught her not to base the sauce on ketchup (ugh!))
On a more realistic note for the working class:
Our field crews have their meals provided by the company: in general we pay the company running the camp R$ 6,00 per day per person for all 3 meals or about U$ 2.00 per day which is considerably cheaper. In terms of quality, so-so by N.Am standards (I eat the same food if I'm on field duty) Even so, this is usually as good or better than the crew would eat at home.
Other things : Cachaça - hard sugar cane liquor- 40% alc/vol is r$2.50 (u$ 0.80) a 750 ml bottle, so even the poorest can get drunk.
Sorry, looks like I forgot the www, so the link would be http://www.mindat.org Also of possible utility is www.rockhounds.com
On topic though, petrified wood can look very similar to Tiger's eye if the grain is well preserved (I have some stashed away in my collection somewhere like this to work on when I retire). Also: petrified wood can be found in various stages of replacement, I've seen some that could probably be turned on a lathe successfully. The replacement mineral in petrified wood can be varied: Opal (even precious opal), quartz, carnotite (nasty radioactive stuff), calcite (makes for a pretty soft material), and others.
Tiger eye is a form of quartz, pseudomorphous after asbestos (crocidolite in Tiger's eye, riebeickite in the case of Falcon's eye) It it the partially replaced asbestos fibres which give the woodlike sheen. Could probably find a reference at http:\\mindat.org if I wasn't feeling so lazy.
As a geophysicist, I've been looking for a simple tool for manipulating 3d datasets. Many of the field surveys I conduct result in data sets consisting of X(Usually UTMeasting), Y(usually UTMnorthing),Z(depth-either from surface or absolute), and a list of values. (physical properties - conductivity, chargeability, etc) So far I haven't seen anything that will grid this data well in 3 dimensions - most software I've used ends up making 2-d slices and then laying them side by side rather than making a proper 3-d matrix. I would rather have a proper 3d grid with colour/transparency levels based on the property values I can orient in realtime. When I see the rapid realtime 3d processing in games and compare it to the slow 2-d gridding in commercial geo software I end up shaking my head...
Impressive!
The photo taken during descent clearly shows fluvial structures on the surface, indicating liquid precipitation (rain!) of some nature. The surface photo shows what looks to be rounded cobbles, again an indication of liquid interactions, at moderate velocities judging from their apparent size. Very cool, and will definitely be provoking more questions than answers

But at least they're still supporting both versions. 1.65 was just recently released for both Linux and Windows. I still haven't got it working correctly in linux (no fault of Bioware, I have a poorly supported onboard video) This brings up the issue: not everyone has access to bleeding edge hardware. (I have to get relatives to ship from overseas or pay up to 3x the going rate - a crappy mx440 is over the equivalent of 200 dollars here, and a 6800 goes for the equivalent of 1200 dollars) So I'm forced to go with less than optimal hardware for the time being.
Lack of open drivers is not always the manufacturer's direct fault - often they have NDA's on licenced technologies that limit what they can reveal to 3rd parties (the poor folks trying to get Linux drivers working) hence, unless the company is committed to linux support like NVidia, and makes their own drivers in-house with binary releases, even rudimentary gaming support for the rest of us is an uphill battle. Not is all gloom and doom however, for instance I find the linux sound drivers for my motherboard far superior to the Windows ones!
The last two game purchases I made were deliberately because of Linux support... I'm not one of the mythical freeloaders the Microsoft astroturfers seem to go on about. I am also working on getting an NVidia card (6600GT) sent here, but for the time being I still need to dual-boot.
Just a thought about the chutes. What kind of material will maintain flexibility at the temperatures that will be encountered in the atmosphere. First the probe will be scorched by re-entry, then flash frozen to the point where almost all materials become extremely brittle. The thermal stresses will be incredible on the electronics as well. I have a feeling there will be new Huygens-sized crater on Titan.
The person who came up with the abiotic theory is largely regarded as a crackpot. Methane can be generated abiotically and there may be reserves related to this, but crude is full of degenerate organically derived molecules - cracked chlorophyll and other such things. Host reservoirs are categorized by the degree of such decomposition - see Vitrinite Reflectance Index. The Athabaska tar sands are Cretaceous, they merely overly the Shield.
Although Lula is pretty buddy-buddy with other left-leaning politicos (Castro & Chavez for example as well as a lot of ties to China), he also seems to be on reasonable terms with Bush & co., so I don't think we should be too worried about Brasil making deals with rogue states. It may be a subtle warning : look we have rockets - look we COULD build nukes, so leave Amazonia alone. *A lot of otherwise intelligent Brasilians seriously think the US wants to take over the Amazon Basin for its natural resources.
Brazil doesn't have expansionist leanings, and gets along well with neighboring countries. There is a desire to be more involved in the international scene (A permanent place on the UN Security council has been proposed) Brazil may be considered Third World, but it is not a poor country, problems are more due to distribution of wealth rather than lack thereof. Assuming corruption can be brought under control, Brazil has a bright future, and can certainly afford to pursue a space program.
