Re Ocean ridge volcanics:
The basalt and associated rock from spreading centres tend to be Low-K, Low Th and high Fe. Potassium and Thorium in igneous rocks tend to be associated with granites or the types of volcanoes that go "BOOM!" rather than produce extensive flows.
Makes some sense to see potassium anomalies in the old basins if there was water there which has since been evaporated, with the concentration increasing toward the centres, as potassium salts are somewhat more soluble than their sodium equivalents, theyd be the last left to precipitate out. Thorium on the other hand is usually residual, at least here on Earth, and tends to concentrate along shorelines and riverbeds due its high density and low solubility.
France and Italy will be laughing as they start siphoning off the oil & gas hidden under the salt beds in the deep waters of the Mediterranean. It was just to expensive and impractical to extract before, the technology is now becoming available.
Version 3 breaks UnPlug and FireWhat, among others, I can see lots of people not wanting to give up their favorite addons to upgrade. I for one upgraded but miss Unplug, its annoying to have to reload video on a slow connection when I want to show something funny to the kids that I found while they were napping.
I'm wondering where they plan on getting the lime from.
Normally its produced this way: CaC03 (limestone/marble/calcite)+ lots of heat -> CaO+ CO2
So they plan on producing CO2 to get rid of CO2?
Whiskey Tango Foxtrot?

I'm in agreement with paskie here, I haven't had to do any app-specific patching in a while. Sound seems to be the only thing that gives me any problems. Quite a few things that I hadn't expected to work, ran fine, for example some work specific software that I would expect had never been tested against wine. Some hoary old software like Fallout 2 now works as well as it did when I ran Windows, and all my Blizzard games are working as well. When the occasional app patch breaks things, a fix is usually available by the next release, and a workaround within a day or so. (Frex. the bizarre multiple library hack to get Eve Online running recently)
Tell me about it, both Jader Barbalho and Collor got elected yesterday. I get the impression a lot of people vote based on publicity, not on ethics. That and a lot of free cestas basicas discretely passed. It's similar to the pork barrel politics in the US. Roubo, mais faz - "He's a crook, but he gets stuff done"
In other news, Tesora Gifts of Australia has been puzzled by huge numbers of web hits from Iran and North Korea.
An unidentified NK source remarked that the off the shelf solution was much better than the software responsible for the recent failure of their long range missile test. Homeland Security has dispatched a Special Forces team to seal this obvious breach of export restrictions.
Although the geo girls were cute.
Lucky you, most of my female colleagues in geology looked like they had an extra Y chromosome.
Though I do remember a couple notable exceptions. Now the geography dept had a better selection of well formed strictly XX specimens.
Id expect valuable materials to be somewhat rarer on the moon. Most mineral deposits are either the results of elements being concentrated by either the actions of gravity or by hydrothermal solutions. With the reduced gravity, the valuable minerals would remain evenly distributed throughout the rock, making extraction difficult. And without hydrothermal activity, there is no natural system at work concentrating the disseminated material into economic quantities. There might be some interesting material associated with metallic impactors, but most of that is vaporized on impact.
I've had no troubles getting the native linux games running, NWN, DOOM3, and UT2004 all run flawlessly. I haven't played with WINE gaming, though if I get anything that requires XP I'll get around to it. The farthest I've gotten with WINE is getting Excel to run, and even that was iffy: the save as feature doesn't work though a regular save did. I did like the NVidia drivers, upgrading a 5200 to a 6600GT was as simple as power down, swap cards, power up. No reboots to install drivers, it JUST WORKS. Gaming (read Blizzard) is really is the only reason I haven't wiped the Win partition and converted it and my media partition to Reiserfs or ext3
He's probably going to wire his pleasure centre so he won't have to spank his monkey any more.
He'll be over in the corner drooling in a state of perpetual orgasm.
I would consider this to be a conflict of interest. Why fix a vulnerability if you can sell a 49.95 security package instead. Now Microsoft will probably only fix the vulnerability for Vista, and leave everyone else hanging.
You have two choices, upgrade, or rent our security pack for 49.95 for year.
Too bad option 3, get off the treadmill, is unavailable for those locked in by their applications.
The additional fine structure and soft tissue information will probably give us a lot more insight on a lot of the details of evolution. It will be interesting to see this method applied to PreCambrian and early Cambrian (eg Burgess Shale) microfossils. No doubt there will be applications in biostratigraphy as well, such as a finer grained division on index fossils due to differences in the soft tissues not previously apparent.
Jones family to service desk please!
Congratulations Mr. Jones, the oldest child is yours, the other two have different fathers, but we managed to locate one, he's coincidentally on the same flight as yours.
Flight 3485 now boarding, have an nice flight!
The deepsea floor cracks with the rumbles of Microsofts declining sales as software becomes "good enough". As the developers wander out into the seabed picking up the flopping fish of patent infringing code, the wave of lawsuits builds out of sight, until it crashes in with its weighty force, SCOuring all in its path. Stick to high ground and be safe!
Seriously it is an interesting question, I use this nick in at least 8 places. It's fairly unique, so
anyone I know online from any one site has a reasonable chance of identifying the actual individual behind the nick. I have an extremely common name in my country of birth, one full page in the phone book for ~200k people, though at my current residence I can probably be sure I'm the only one in ~120K persons here in this city with this name. On the other hand with nmillion internet users there's probably only a small handfull of praedictii. In the late 80's, early 90's my customary nick was devoid, though soon appeared so many people using this I soon abandoned it, as it ceased to be a unique identifier. So I can understand CmdrTaco's feelings of betrayal at this somewhat arbitrary decision on a GM's part, ie why suddenly after 6 months is the name considered a violation of the "rules".
A pity the article didn't have an actual map available, it would have been interesting to see at what stage of crustal evolution the process stopped. For instance our continental masses are composed of smaller accreted terranes (the process is ongoing: W.California is being added to the N.American plate)..
Rumors have been flying since the sent the remainder of Blizz North to the main branch...
While a Diablo 3 announcement would be welcome, I expect them to announce something along the lines of the Warcraft III board game finally shipping or some such.

Its certain geos have more fun. Reclining thrust faults and metamorphic aureoles are sources of great diversion. Cummingtonite?

At UW, it was called K.A.O.S (Killer as Organized Sport), though with suction cup guns in place of squirtguns.

I wonder what kind of drinks they offer... Shakes. And on British Airways, vodka martinis, shaken, not stirred.

Someone posted this site on a mailing list i frequent. I imagine they will be getting a shitload of funding from Kansas

Naw, confirms my belief that spammers are bloodsucking vampires. Should just put a wooden stake through his heart.
