True you learn more about Linux and the inner workings of Gentoo when you install it manually but that's not the point. If I have a LiveCD Installer to use, it damn well better work. That's the point of a LiveCD installer. Sadly, IMHO it wasn't ready for release. I had a nightmare trying to install Gentoo 2007 using the AMD64 LiveCD installer. It got so bad that I just gave up and did the manual install. Constant freezes/hangs with no apparent reason or logs/errors to help debug the situation. Wasn't fun to say the least.
While I don't know the full details of how it was originally designed I too have been caught up in taking a bit of code and running with it. Only to find out in the long run, I was running a marathon when I just needed to run a lap. Sorry for the bad analogy. But it's so easy as a programmer to think one way is the best only to realize that it's not. Then to have to undo those changes while at the same time not voiding past code/works would be a nightmare. Still, I agree, it's not pretty.
I haven't seen anyone say it yet so I will. Congratz on graduating and receiving job offers from both Google and Microsoft. As for the problem at hand, it's your decision to make. The/. community can say "this" and tell you "that" but it's ultimately up to you and what you think is best.

We've probably all been there where company politics were causing more harm than good. "Welcome to work, you have 3 days to do X but it will take you 2 days to get clearance to logon." I can sympathize for the guy and I myself have used similar tactics to get access to do my job. Nothing like password cracking but I've still gained access when I wasn't supposed to. In some cases "Don't ask, don't tell" works, you just have to be smart about it and know how far you can go. But especially not when you're working for the government! You don't mess around with government security (and I use that term lightly) to get your job done. You're going to get caught and they will prosecute you. At least this guy was smart enough to work out a plea.
That's right. We need more money! A monthly subscription fee to play a legally addictive game is not enough. We need to completely own their lives and money.
And this is why the "Pirate Party" will never be taken seriously. There are legitmate organizations like the EFF, etc., that are all for copyright overhaul. Creating "The Pirate Party" removes a degree of legitimacy from anyone calling for copyright reform.
Not only that but the Pirate Party really doesn't have a stance on any of the other issue that politicians face. Abortion, gay marriage, the war, taxes, social security, the list goes on and on. I'm all for copyright reform and all but who besides "the few, the proud, and the geeky" will take this party serious without a stance on other issue besides copyright laws?
What about a n00b friendly UI? I'm working on setting up a SVN server for my office but I know that if the end users have to do more than a few clicks/keystrokes they won't use it. Let's just say that a majority of the people that I work with are totaly PEBCAK prone.
I wasn't arguing the fact that rebooting can be fast on some machines (alas I don't own a Mac:(). I was simply arguing that having to reboot sucks. OOC how does one convince their better half that a Mac laptop is a good investment. I'm trying to convince the wife:)
Is there any way to migrate to the Open Document Format and then store everything under SVN? OO writes/reads Word files so it might be possible to read the files and save them in the open format. I'm not too familiar with the inner workings of SVN but I know that it r0x0rs for ascii files. I haven't researched SVN support for bin/doc/compiled files.
you could use the XP boot for games, and Apple's OS for all the stuff it's been used so for.
How annoying would that be. "Yeah, let's jump on line and kick some ass...oh, wait a minute, have to reboot." I dual boot my laptop right now and the thing that keeps me from loosing my mind is a shared partition between Windows and Linux. Don't think that would work for games....
A merger between Sony and Apple would be more of a fit, both go for the "our brand name deserves a premium" idea.
Yeah but that would mean that Sony would have to give up the Vaio. I don't see that happening any time soon.
I'd hate to be the PR coorespondent for the RIAA after this one gets out on the 6:00 news! "Yes we recommend that students drop out to pay us an over abuntant amount for songs illegally downloaded. What's that? You have a problem with us sueing for $750 a song when you can by it from iTunes for a $1.00? Expect a letter from our lawyers *evil grin here*."
If people were praying solely to prove that God does in fact heal then yes, you are correct in saying "God, if you exist, prove it." However, prayer is not about proving that God exists or not, prayer is a way to speak to God. Can you only speak to God through prayer? No. You can speak to God just by speaking to him. God knows your wants and your needs. He knows you. It is written that God knows you better than you know yourself. He knew you before you were born. (I apologize for not citing exact scripture as I'm writing this on the fly) What this "study" does not show or account for is that the people doing the praying were asking God to help heal those people, not to prove that you exist. There is a big difference. If I say to you "please help me with x" I'm asking you to help. If I say you to "show me that you're a good person and help me with x" I'm tempting you to prove that you're a good person and help me. In essence you've turned a prayer request "God please help heal these people" into "God show me you exist and heal these people." In that context, "Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God" does indeed apply. Those people who prayed asked God to heal those people, not to prove His existence. God has a reason for everything that the does. I know that's a generic statement and usually the leads to flaming but He does. I don't claim to know why he answers this person's prayers and not the others but I can always ask him in heaven.
On a personal note, in case you can't tell I am a Christian. I believe that God sent his son Jesus to die for our sins. The fact that I believe this makes Christian. I don't know how you define a Christian and I'd love to discuss this with you if you're interested. Drop me a line some time.
That verse was taken out of context. The passage that you used is when Satan was tempting Jesus during his fasting. If you're going to quote the Bible to help "justify" you beliefs, or lack of therefore, read the entire passage, not just the verse that suits your purpose.

Sadly, the same could be said for breeding....
