Logically you could just buy 4 candybars for 20 cents, and get the same amount of chocolate you used to.:-)

If something were to happen that enough people wanted to revolt then it stands to reason that some in the military would possibly be of like mind.
If that were the case, the general public wouldn't need guns, would they? That argument falls flat on it's face. Basically I'd say that what's going to be enforced is what the military is prepared to support, given the unbelievably vast amount of money poured into it. As the military prides itself on taking away soldiers' sense of individualism and identity, I suspect they'd obey the government command like robots under most circumstances.
With the exception of prize tournaments (the money's got to come from somewhere), I fail to see why all this cannot be done on a free server. GMs can play on free servers, anti-computer cheating systems can be donated/developed for free (FOSS), etc. It may be more likely to happen on ICS, but there's no thing other than, IMHO, a general feeling of smugness ('I've got the money to PAY for my chess!') that prevents stuff like GMs playing on FICS.
Mr. ICC admin, I don't wish to pay money to use a chess server when it takes less processing power/bandwidth to run one than your average IRC server. Could you tell me what happened to FICS (It seems dead now:-( ) and whether there are any ICC-like free chess servers around, other than Yahoo?
It's probably pretty easy to get in here, especially if you're American. Having been born in the UK, I don't know too much about the immigration process though.
The British elections aren't like that either. Although there is the occasional attack on opposition party leaders, these piss me off/turn me off politics a lot, as I'm sure they do a lot of other Brits, and political parties actually seem to be noticing this. Hopefully they'll stand by their rhetoric and continue to campaign on progressive proposals, not negative ridicule.
So you'd support Bush staying in for '4 more years'? You might not approve of Moore but really this has to come down to the lesser of two evils - let's say Moore's documentary would definately win Kerry the election if aired, which would you support - airing the documentary to remove an insane virtual dictator who has taken thousands of lives and inspired a lot of hatrid in the world, or keeping Bush in power because a documentary was slightly misleading?
Having both sides of a disc holding data is a pretty major problem in terms of labelling. A lot of people (myself not included) don't even bother to put CDs/DVDs in jewel cases these days - without a label on the DVD either, they're gonna be pretty screwed when searching for that 1001 videos collection they burnt the other day in their DVD pile.
Let me get this straight too. (S)he has a perfectly good calculator, and wishes to 'whip out an abacus' to do difficult calculations that could almost certainly be done much faster either with a calculator on paper, for what reason? Getting back to roots?
How is this contradictory? Just because the US authorities like spying on people in their own homes, doesn't mean Slashdotters in general approve of that idea any more than mass CCTV.
Depends how you define censored. If you mean 'no outlet in the entire country could publish anything, on pain of death' then yeah, you're right. But if you mean 'the major networks refused to cover this stuff en masse' then i think the word 'censored' does apply. That's the only way the general public in the US really learns about things these days, isn't it?
Someone who moves the window down (even a touch, in this case) will lose sight of those controls entirely
Yes, if they move the window down so that it goes off the bottom of the screen and completely forget where the controls were 2 seconds ago, that will happen. If they have problems with that, I think they should stop using their computer and submit to the nearest euthanasia clinic.
Based on your criticisms, I've redesigned the interface to be easier and friendlier to use. See what you think.
This inspires confidence that our current understanding of reality is correct, at least for the domains where the models are intended to apply (important caveat).
Indeed it is - and doesn't it apply here? If EM signals take hundreds of years to reach us from nearby stars, don't you think aliens wouldn't even bother trying to send them out, realising how pointless a means of interstellar communications these signals are? They're likely to be either working on a more appropriate/speedy technology for communications or have already developed it, and we don't have a clue how to pick it up.
Dear God, I wish the mods would start modding this joke down. Seriously, this was funny maybe the 5 times after that Simpsons ep was aired, but now it pisses me off. Shut the FUCK up. Thanks.
They will probably revisit this 5 years out... By which time congress WILL have made it illegal for individuals to record any kind of broadcast material...
Microsoft gets a larger application base for Longhorn.
I'd consider that a bad thing because the larger the userbase MS gets for Longhorn, the more power they have to prise people away from their old OSes and onto the new one with forced upgrades, incompatible software etc., resulting in more unnecessary spending on both software and hardware for the end user.
My wife and I just use our cell phones. Of course, we still have our old numbers which are in a different area code. That freaks people our when we order pizza.
Your cellphone numbers are area-dependent based on where you bought the cellphone? Really? Ha. Hahahhahahaa!
And all those ugly cancer rates will continue to increase...
I'm sorry, I know there isn't a proven link between high-power high-frequency wireless signals and cancer growth, but isn't it a bit reckless to be relying on new technology when this hasn't been researched conclusively?
Ashcroft got the figures wrong. I believe he meant there were five thousand hubs, each with 605000000000000000000 movies and 1050000000000000000000 songs, containing a total of 400000000000000000000000000000000 petabytes of data. Apparently they'd managed not only to share all the media in existance on Earth, but find most of the media from other cultures in the galaxy and share them, hence breaking intergalactic law also.
Do you have another explanation? Misguided, perhaps.
If the police constantly asked me for my ID without sound reason, I'd complain about harassment.
To whom?

what was shown in that movie should be enough to get bush nailed to the cross
:-)
But mightn't that make him some kind of a... martyr?

I think you meant 'adjective'.

You're confusing it with Service Pack 2.
