The DS does this as well- Was happily surprised to discover it. The thing is, game consoles these days are "always on" anyway- in power save mode, waiting for a signal from the remote to turn it on and wasting electricity. Seems like a natural evolution of sorts to have it actually offer some additional feature while it's in this state.

Did you even read the post you've responded to? Parallels isn't even mentioned once. FWIW, I doubt there's a way of getting Oblivion to work well with Paralells, however in my experience it worked fine with Boot Camp- however, on the iMac I had to run it in a lower than native resolution to get it to run at a decent speed with the visuals turned up.

It's kind of ridiculous that this would scratch a disc when Microsoft was promoting this as a feature. IIRC, it was on G4TV's Icons series where Microsoft demonstrated how the lights on the front console (which indicate what controllers are plugged in) change their orientation when the XBOX is moved to horizontal or vertical. Why would the console do this if they didn't expect their users to move the XBOX while powered on?

I'd also add here that the G5 in the iMac barely works as is; if you notice on these systems, they are set to "Automatic" Processor performance, which according to my benchmarks runs at about half the speed it's capable of. When you change it to the maximum setting, the fans spin up and it gets much hotter inside- I'm talking about 65C+ HD temperature and 75C CPU, while mostly idle.

This is also the reason for the noise/fan complaints; because the case is so small, Apple was forced to use small fans running at a high RPM to cool the system, thus creating an annoying buzzy model airplane noise. Drives a lot of people crazy. Then again, many users don't even notice, so it goes both ways.

I pay my credit card bills online and one of them was accidentally still linked to my old Wachovia account-- I recently switched banks and still have my old account open. Instead of the ~$1,000 charge being denied, my old bank (probably "for my convenience") let the charge go through, gave me a -$1,000 balance with an additional $30 overdraft fee on top of that, and sent me a notice in the mail a few days later. I was going to use this as a special Paypal only account until this happened. Yeah, you still have the benefit of them not freezing your real bank account, so I suppose that may be useful enough, but it's still a hassle either way.

I'm sorry, but if you're recording music, who cares what platform you're on? Why do you "reluctantly" use Windows XP? Think of it as an appliance; choose the one that offers the most functionality for the price. Right now, Linux isn't there, and realistically I don't see how it ever will be.

Forget about support for "a decent soundcard"- you're going to need support for ALL of the decent soundcards, all the latest hardware [i.e. usb midi interfaces], VST/VSTi and DX plugins, decent sequencer (Logic, Cubase SX) etc., before ANYONE who's serious about music would even consider switching to Linux.

Nevermind the fact that Linux is appalling for desktop use to begin with. Maybe if some company or group of developers actually put together an original distribution one day, such as one that isn't !! EVERY BINARY EVER COMPILED ON LINUX TOSSED ON A 18 CD SET !! there might be some chance. What I'm saying is, there needs to be a new kind of Linux, not a new kind of Linux distribution. You know, sort of like MacOS X.

Hey, I know, how about you wait a few months and run Logic Audio on MacOS X when it's released?

I'm guessing they're gathering statistics on when people are home. Can't really tell them to stop, and my phone company (Verizon) says 1) it's legal because it's not before 9am or after 9pm and 2) I can't block "out of area" calls.

Actually what my phone company suggested is that I purchase their call intercept service, which asks out of area callers for a name before ringing your line. But that's too fucked up. How do I know it's not the phone company making the calls so that I buy their stupid service? I said they could either disconnect my line or give me the service free, and they disconnected my line. oh well ;)

Eventually, though, I sacrificed some of that support (and with the place I'm using now, not much) to move elsewhere and get more features at the same price. Looks like Dreamhost is more price competitive now, but I'd still have to pay up to four times as much to get certain features (such as Anonymous FTP, unique IP address, up to 10 domains, etc.)

  23. A Necessary Evil? on Review of Pay Napster · · Score: 2, Insightful

I for one, enjoy the concept of a new Napster. Yes indeed, the day and age of free music for all is over, but I'm willing to fork over a little bit of cash every month in order to listen to some swell new music. Without Napster, I would have never heard of the Dave Matthews Band. Never would I have been amazed by the sensational pop stylings of Britney Spears. Discovering underground music is what this service is all about, and even if the underground involves money and other less-popular stuff, it's still worth it. Sure, I won't be able to trade from my enormous collection of pristine-sounding 128KB MP3s, but hell, there was a time when you COULDN'T trade music over the Internet. You had to settle for lyrics and tablature, and hum the melodies.

Why is it that every time a company comes around and decides to charge money for a product, tens of thousands of ninnies decide that it's suddenly no longer 'worth it'? I'll tell you why. It's because they're poor.
