Which means you *do* care somewhat. I think you mean that you couldn't care less.

  2. Re:Could he do the Hobbit like The Godfather Part on Peter Jackson Says "Hobbit" Movie In The Works · · Score: 1
The difference with this and Godfather II is that the Godfather's parallel development was absolutely *key* to understanding the family. You got the origins and the current story and were able to see links between these men of will.

The connections between The Hobbit and the Scouring of the Shire, on the other hand, are tenuous at best and are definitely not appropriate for the silver screen, where a concrete arc is important.

Yeah, 'gargoyles' -- this is immediately what I thought of too. Imagine hundreds of people selling the data from their devices. An organization could 'triangulate' using multiple people's recordings to track people or events.

Doesn't sound great for privacy, but I imagine we'll have to get used to this kind of thing -- how could you stop it? Ban the devices, you're stomping on rights. Take the devices to the logical end, you're invading privacy.

  4. This != Sub on Fuelless Flight with Air Submarine? · · Score: 1

I'm thinking of all the differences between the sea and the air -- you don't have to 'land' a submarine, there aren't any 'storms' under the sea, and a sub can't just spin out of control like an airplane.

We don't have to worry about it from a statistical point of view (case in point: the Doomsday Problem), but if there's a pattern of life-threatening impacts historically, we might want pay attention. IIRC, there's a cycle of 26 million years for extinction level impacts, give or take 10,000 years, and we *are*, in fact, overdue.

The truth is that we won't be able to predict the one that will hit us -- you can track a fly ball, but the line drive to the face (with a lump of charcoal in the dark of night) becomes a problem.

  22. Try boarding school... on Take Back Your Time! · · Score: 1
If you want a complete life-change from the daily grind, try teaching at a boarding school. You don't need a huge amount of background experience, just a passion and a skill. Most boarding schools (here in New England) are constantly looking for good Comp-Sci, Science, and Math teachers.

Granted, it can get crazy -- teaching 5 classes, coaching or running an activity, dorm duty, tutoring, and other extracurricular activities make for a very full-time job.

But the payoff is rewarding work (usually), free everything (food, apartment, a big fat campus bandwidth pipe), 3 weeks off at New Year's, a month for spring break, and the entire summer. My school has a large grant program to let teachers pursue higher degrees or just go vacation somewhere cool for personal development (CERN this summer for me and my wife).

So it's a trade-off for me. I'm in the middle of insane parent conferences right now, but 2 weeks off for Thanksgiving are coming right up...
