I am of the opinion that exceptions need to be made for drivers. If the Linux community wants companies to support their kernels then we need to allow proprietary drivers to link with the kernel.

What do the hardware companies have to lose by GPLing the driver? They're money comes from hardware not the drivers. It will be ported to more platforms if its GPLed; thus increasing sales of the hardware.

It wont come to revolting in most cases. A monopoly cannot sustain itself. Buying out all competition is not an effective tactic because in general it would cost more to buy a business out than it cost to open it. Anyone would then eagerly jump into the business just to get bought out, if not for the potential profits. The monopoly would eithher go bankrupt buying them all out or stop buying them out and lose the monopoly. Thus buyouts can not work. In most cases, the only other tactics are FUD and legislation. FUD will not work forever though; as long as someone sees through it the truth will eventually come out. Thus in most cases, the only way a monopoly can be sustained is through government regulations. The other way is when a resource is found only in a certain region, which is owned by the company.

Read the quote you gave. He says as long as you dont endanger lives not as long as you dont kill people. If you dont know how to drive then you will endanger lives if you drive, even if you dont crash. Buildng permits are completely different. Building permits just state that you will follow the zoning requirements; Building a computer store in a place zoned for a convenience store(an example given by the parent) doesn't endanger lives.

But, doesn't a car lease have value? It'll disappear, it's only temporary.

I went to a wedding once where the couple paid like $800 for an ice sculpture. It melted. So, did it have no value?

The roses in your example will be black in a few days. Things which are temporary are still valuable.

In the first example the car lease will disappear, but they cant legally make it expire at any time other than that given in the contract. In the other 2 examples they were destroyed by nature, and not at man's discretion so they are similar to the 1st example. When the parent poster said 'at any time' he meant at the discretion of a person or group of people.

They paid workers to sit at the computer, and play the game finding/crafting items, and then sold them on ebay. They got sued and shut down, but, still, to say that it's not property just because it's got no value to you is short-sighted.

the parent did not say that it wasn't property because an account has no value to him, but rather because the player doesn't own it. And simply because someone will pay for something does not give it value. If I donate money to someone does that mean that nothing is worth something?
