To be fair, I am probably what you would consider a leftist, and I absolutely love my car. I don't see individualism and "leftism" as being mutually exclusive. ("Leftism" is quite a relatitive term anyway. Doesn't it really just mean "more liberal than those who are conservative"?) I don't think people should be dependent on the government, I think that the government should be a useful tool of the public (George Washington: "Government.. is a handy servant, but a dangerous master."); to be a useful tool, it has to be adequately funded. As a "leftist", you imagine that I want to send everyone to a gulag, yet "leftists" seem to be the ones who speak out most to ensure equal rights. I donate to both the ACLU and the EFF.
You are using the term "leftist" as simply a buzzword, much like "communist" was used in the 1950s and "terrorist" is being used today.
Who is to say that the Xbox version won't support extra mods and levels? That would be a cool feature.. download, burn to cd, go to menu on Xbox screen, load on to hard disk, play.
You're right about the replay value though. The Xbox version will fade away after the console falls to obsolescence.
Just a little question, how is the slot-loading optical drive that's featured on Apples proprietary? I mean, it's just a hole in the front. It's not like only Apple-branded CDs will fit inside. BTW, car stereos have had this kind of loading system for quite some time.
I did a few months ago, and it's a great thing to see the investment pay off. Not only should people donate, but they should put the nice sticker the EFF sends in return on their cars or in other prominent locations to get the word out. It should reach the eyes of at least a few receptive minds.
Just for the sake of argument, were Apple to release an X86 (-whatever extension) computer with a compatible version of OS X, how long do you think it would be before some enterprising hacker devises a workaround? Maybe some easily homemade, add-in EEPROM card that you can flash with whatever reverse-engineered (and probably illegal) code, that will fake the Apple BIOS?

"every privacy-related story must be in alarmist mode"
As it should be. There are countless examples of why we shouldn't trust such corporations/govt. agencies; if we trustingly fall asleep, do you think you will have any privacy left to speak of?
"What percentage of CE source code is available?"..."as close to 100% as we can make it -- we can't release sources that belong to other companies." Most operating systems contain code licensed from other sources.
This seems like a good idea, as 'embedded' applications have a much different set of operability requrements to fulfill, and an all-encompassing OS just isn't right for that. I wonder what might happen though, after time, if the majority of the code gets rewritten by third parties? Will MS just be plain unable to share anything useful anymore?
Hey, 15 isn't so bad, some go down with only a couple posts on the comments page. I know I sure as hell couldn't afford the bandwidth to withstand a/.ing.
Amen to that. Crock pot, oven, and stovetop-prepared foods taste immensely better than their microwaved counterparts.
As far as other uses for networked appliances, I can't think of too many; as an above poster mentioned, many require people to interact with them at some point anyway. I can see a greater benefit for industrial appliances, so that batches could be controlled all at the same time, or monitored in case of failure.
...the set of people capable of making distributions (call this set A) is not a representative sample of the population of people who need a *good* distribution...You can't create a distribution until you enter set A, but by the time you've entered set A what's good for you is no longer what's good for average joe.
Then why not get people not of Set A to test your software? If you have average Joe giving feedback on what works and what doesn't, then the finished product should be usable by average Joe. It's unacceptable to say, "It works for me, so it should be good enough for anyone." The lack of testing in this area is a weak point that indicates immaturity on the developers' part.
One has to wonder how long this can last. I cannot RTFA, it doesn't work for me (msnbc.com redirects me to msid.msn.com, which is a disturbing thing in its own right), so I don't know how much this costs. However, I remember reading that next year's budget deficeit is projected to be around $300 billion. What kind of other things will have to be cut in order to keep the US going? Or, how long until the country is bankrupt? I sense major economic whiplash approaching.
...then the above post makes a great analogy for the uninformed, uncaring politician:
Does the water company charge me more because I have more sinks than my next door neighbour? They may charge me more if I use more water but having more sinks doesn't matter, it is the flow that matters. Same should be true with a network.
This kind of simplification is what really appeals to politicians. Makes sure, if you attend a public formum to gauge opinion on such laws, that you say things like this. Is there anything else that should be said in simplified politician-speak? Please list anything and everything you can think of!
Is there any way to download the complete package from my windows box (which is fast) so I can install it on my linux box (which is slow) later?
Hmm, none of that really kept you from this one...

Dude, if that's true, there must be hundreds of dead people in my attic. My house is massively dusty.
And here it is for cheaper

Wahoo!
Look at that poll on perlmonks.org! It's miles above the polls here at slashdot. What would it take to get such polls here?
