  1. Well first of all it was cool as hell. Second of all this was test of the big ass rocket they used. Normally they would use dead weight like lead or sand, but this time Musk just decided to use his car.

An yes, there are other reasons. Mainly it was a publicity stunt for Space X. An it was a good one. It has people focused on space travel again. Anything that does that in a positive manner is a good thing to me.

  2. I agree. I will take my chances and if in the next million years a car falls on me. Hey Free Car!

  3. Well what do you know. I was dead wrong. Someone is making money off this bitcoin thing.

Yeah, I got to agree with this. Linux, and therefor unix, has lots of programs and applications. Outside of games and if you are willing to put up with its little quirks, you can work linux into a office environment.

But generally speaking when I need to get any real work done. I usually toss aside the gui and open a vt100 window. An 90% of the time us use nothing but command line tools that come with the OS to get work done.

Jesus Christ, is that what passes for a "nerd" today? I'm glad I don't know you, dude.

He isn't. I don't know how that got modded up to +4 ether.

Everyone know one of the true signs of nerddom is the love to read, with scifi and fantasy at the top. I don't know one true nerd that doesn't have a well stock library, physical or virtual. One of the reasons I got my android tablet was so I could have all my favorite books with me at all times, and have access to an infinite supply at the touch of a button.

    I deny his nerddom.

The early books in these were generally pretty readable by pretty good writers but they've proliferated beyond all belief, basically becoming Harlequin Romances for Nerds. Most (used) book stores I go to now have sections devoted to these titles and they're crowding out original Sci-Fi.

This is the exact reason I stopped reading Star Trek books. The early books where actually very good. Even the weak ones where readable. Some where even fantastic, Yesterday's Son comes to mind. They where not even afraid to take risk.

Then they took a nose dive sometime in the '90 with hack writers like Michael Jan Friedman and plots just didn't make any sense. Even for Star Trek. I was reading the book Dyson Sphere and the plot go so stupid I tossed in the trash halfway through it and didn't read another Star Trek book for 10 years.

I picked up one at the grocery store because the back looked interesting. My mistake. Instead of all the books containing complete individual stories like the episodes. Now they all tie into arcs and if you want to know what is going on in this book, you have to read these book. Fuck that.

I have a Roku (love it, too).

I bought my first Roku about 2 years ago when I was living out of hotel rooms. They only offered shitty basic cable but had decent wifi. It changed the way I watch tv, if you can call what I do watching tv. Our cable box has been unplugged for well over a year. We watch everything through the Roku now.

Have you ever took a stroll down the "dark" recesses of the channel list? There is some strange and weird shit out there. We found some channel that had some old guy in a silver jump suit waiving around some weird models. We wasted 20 minutes listening to him ramble on, then he said his "lecture" was going to go on for 4 more hours. My tolerance for weird shit was empty so off he went. We never did find out what he was rambling about.

  10. With Netflix and Youtube, I already have more interesting content than what I could watch in a lifetime.

This, exactly. I subscribe to 3 streaming services now, Netflix, Hulu, and Curiosity Stream. With these services, Youtube, and my Plex collection, I don't see myself subscribing to anything else.

The only reason that I still have my cable service is because I'm under contract. Which will run out next month, then time for trip behind the barn. Besides the only thing I'm now watching on cable is Foxnews. An I don't care how much Sean Hanily thinks the sun shines out his ass he isn't worth 60 bucks a month.

  11. Hmm...I'm trying to wonder what video from a tiny phone looks like on a nice 4K TV, or even a regular 1080p tv....?

It looks like standard 1080p video. The screen on most smart phones has at least 1080p resolution or higher. Just because the screen is smaller doesn't change the quality of the video. 1080p video on your phone is still 1080p video on your big ass tv.

  12. Do you mean MPC-HC (mpc-hc.org)?

Yes, MPC-HC. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles that VLC has, but it renders virtually everything I've thrown at it perfectly.

  13. No, they haven't. I wouldn't call it the "best free media player" just yet. I've wasted hours trying to fix video issues by re-encoding source material trying to get out pixelization and other errors that I see in VLC. Only to find out the issue is with VLC and not my encodes.

My encodes play just fine in MPC, on Plex, and even windows built in media player just fine. It's only in VLC that I see issues. So, instead of just adding features, it would be nice if they would fix their core features first. As in play video correctly that everyone else can.

I dumped VLC for MPC. It doesn't have as many features but it is a better media player.

Speaking of. Have you ever noticed the difference between getting a dog and a cat fixed. A dog will wake up, go to lick its balls, and think "hey something is missing." But once you get them to the park with a ball, all if forgiven.

Cats on the other, hand will sit across from you, staring at you going "where are they?"

I think this fix is going to be something like a cat. It will just haunt you and haunt you....

  20. The Saturn V is not manufacturable today, and it's not due to "missing blueprints", it's just hopelessly obsolete.

This, but another reason that I heard that we couldn't manufacture a Saturn V any more is because the originals where built by hand. Since most of the original craftsmen that work on the Saturn V have passed on those skillsets died with them.

I'm sure that given enough time and money we could reinvent the skills required, but that time and money could be better used to come up with better systems.

I do not understand why these people want to just launch up and bounce off the dome surrounding the earth. It should be clear that is what is going to happen.

Instead I want to announce my kickstarter project to fund exploratory project. I want to build a "sphere" probably made of metal that we will lower over the edge of the planet to investigate the large turtle that carries the earth, and it supporting elephants on its back. While we are down there we will attempt to discover the sex of the turtle and possibly communicate with it.

This is an entirely original ideal and there is no precedence for in any written proposal fictional or otherwise.
