There was no demo, so I shamelessly warezed the full version.... hear me out. I got about average-demo-length through it (couple of levels) and gave up. It was easy... it sucked. Nothing new. The weapons felt useless, there was no 'feedback' to the game. Never once did I feel like changing weapons, there seemed to be little tactical reasons (well except for the flamethrower). AI was just plain dumb:P
Great engine... I love the Unreal engine, and work on modding it... but... but.... aaaaaagh! This was meant to be the game to end all games!
My father used to be a paratrooper, and on one particular deployment (it was premptive action... no shots fired, so a lot of lounging around on the beach and chatting to civilians).
Anyway, one particular journalist decided that the lack of news didnt make him happy. Seeing a member of my fathers squad talking to a young boy the journalist yells out "He's going to kill you! RUN!" - Then he snaps some wonderful pics of a 'terrorised boy' 'running away in fear' from 'nasty british para invasion'.
Digital imaging isnt the only way to alter the percieved truth. Decisions should come down to the integrity *grin* of the particular journalist involved.
There was a happy ending to the story though... the journalist had his equiptments confiscated:)
Here Mitola mentions a radio that can work with various bands and protocols and a chief benefit is that intelligent software can pick the preferred channel, due to cost or security issues with the various options.
To me this seems like interface metrics done right. Instead of assigning an arbitary integer to represent the cost of using a particular interface or route, this would allow a more quantative measure of the effect each routing option would have on the traffic (cost to user / security / qos).
Research like this, if made more generic, would have excellent applications in IP routing. Not just wireless could benefit from this sort of routing power. We have the technology to do this now, but the advantages of a well implemented system would mean it is worth the effort of getting the standards right (and im talking for all IP here, not just wireless).
I realise that Mitola's idea is from the client point of view, but extending this tech to the whole network would be great IMHO. Every router running this... we could even add in the long wanted factor of link saturation affecting metrics. Oooooh:)
Modern communication is about intrusion. Irritating impatient rings. "Youve got mail!". "Drop whatever you are doing, this _might_ be more important!"
I have a mobile, but when I'm doing something with friends I have it on silent. If someone calls then I see whose calling and then I make the decision to answer it, or call them back later.
I dont mean any offence when I cancel your call, I just am not in a position to rudely drop all my other interactions.
Text messages are nasty... a pet hate is people that ask me questions via SMS. "Hey does a P4 work with a Uber-2 motherboard?" What? You expect me to pay 20c to answer your question? Call me ffs!
There was an interesting artical here a while back on the Amish and their views on technology. I cbf looking for it, but they are not techno-phobes, they just examine the tech to see if it will intefere with their way of life and their community.
Remember though... You dont HAVE to answer a ringing phone. You can call back later.
IANAL but isnt copying media a civil matter, and only distribution is criminal?
Additionally I really hate these stupid numbers that are thrown around... $60million? Yeah maybe... but if i copy a few gig of mp3 off a friend i am NOT ripping the ARIA off for $200000 bucks. Maybe I will not buy a couple of CD's. Sure the record company loses $60. But seriously... these guys with 200 gig of mp3 are hardly likely to have gone and bought it all if they couldntve downloaded it:P
What college student can afford a few million dollars in music?
Nah, we just export that shit:) nobody in their right mind over here would drink it anyway...... oh i actually did partake once a publicity thing... was very cheap indeed, and i was made very sick... i am pleased to report however that the urine levels are still high, so dont worry about missing out:D

Server In A Fly

You actually run into problems with network bandwidth here... especially with a battle out in the open where you cant employ cunning tricks to fix the problem of having to replicate 49 players + 300 AI's to 49 players. (300 players to 300 players would suck)
You can make up for a lot of replication with client side simulation, but in a situation where AI has to make decisions, one client or server must have authority. In a big battle like helms deep.. AIs would be constantly making decisions that would affect the future... which means all simulated proxys need to be updated.
It would be possible to do if the AI followed preset routes before becoming independant... meaning a *lot* less to syncronise. It would be a challenge to code... would be nice to give it a shot:>
I just wish people would use these talents to mod more updated engines so I get nice graphics too:)
The unreal engine is fantastic for this... I went to the effort of learning unrealscript; object orientated, network safe, platform independant programming language. looks like java... but when you can come up with a declaration like: "var syncronised float foo;" it makes any coder thats ever had to grapple with network code sing out with joy:)
the unreal engine is a dream to mod... and i guess this is why we are seeing so many unreal based games coming out (splinter cell, raven shield, etc)
ive been playing ut2003, but i keep going back to ut because of the bevy of mods and mutators avaliable... (a mutator is code that 'hooks' into various routines to affect the gameplay... so you can be playing any game.. but with vampiric damage... or the map full of water)
Dont just stand there then! Run out and grab a copy of "Cossacks"... the new version based on american history has a unit cap of around 10k or so... battles look rather cool:)
You could keep replacing bits... end up with this uber-cat made up of parts from lesser cats!
Hell forget genetic engineering... make your dream cat frankenstein style:D
I can see the man walking into the pet store: "I'll take the cute ginger one in the corner... the one with the green eyes... and that playful one..... errr... and a scalpel"
What else could you spend this cash on?

Its interesting that people would see fit to spend generous wads of cash on extending the life of a cat by a couple of years. I wouldve thought that the cost of this would be prohibitively expensive... for the average owner as well as the average cat:)
I also wonder how someone can justify paying this sort of money... thinking of the starving children, etc, etc. Maybe a compulsory tour of a human hospital to look at lack of funding might be in order for people that would pay for this...
Well lets have a bit of analysis... the GTA3 pc version took a while to come out... not just for the port, but also the hi-res graphics and additional code for effects and multiplayer.
Yes, multiplayer. There is multiplayer code inside the original GTA3... gamespy imports and graphics for the menus, etc. Guess in the end they found the synchronisation issues to be too tricky.
So fast forward to now. Vice City is being ported across. Now while the artsy folks are doing the hi-res textures and sounds, the coders are doing the quick job of porting it... theyve done it before.. they end up with time on their hands. They also know that with working multiplayer they will probably sell double the copies.
Think they might have a crack at finishing the multiplayer? I suggest so;) I hope so!
Im sure the team wants to play it multiplayer as much as we do:)
Mafia is a fantastic game. The graphics really give the feel of the city back then, the slums are downright depressing.
Gameplay is more scripted than GTA, but fun nonetheless. You have the option of a 'free-ride' mode to muck around with... but the gameplay is fairly linear.
Its more satisying to commit mass genocide too because of the gritty realism.
The one we haven't got licked is patch management and engineering. Each division has their own engineering group. We have got to bring engineering to a point where all patches are together in a single deliverable way. We're looking to get to two installers in the next two years and then to one some time after that.
Evolutionary computation solving the travelling salesman? HAH!
"Yeah the little blue travelling salesmen was doing quite well... but then he got eaten by a bunch of those little red buggars. The green ones are too busy having sex to travel anywhere... and the orange solutions are too bloody stupid and get lost."
Heck, after billions of years of evolution, my sister still gets lost on the way to the corner store:)
The only domain left where cds are of value is recording information for consumers. Backups, archives and kind-of-floppy disks for people who can't yet afford writeable dvds. Sales are on the down, fast, and for good reason.
I agree, and furthermore this is why the media associations should not have a levy on blank media to make up for 'losses due to piracy'.

Why kill your own citizens? Bush has enough fun blowing up innocent afghans...
Oh but its a war on terror! Thats different then!
Or you could unbind netbios and file/print sharing for ms networks from your dialup connection...

it cant cost that much to develope a system like what your describing
no... i would imagine it costs about $5000 to develop the system... then you have a small overhead of 25 billion dollars for the management

i did not mean to insinuate this.
