well, I would really like the world to become more free, If we can get more and more free, then that will give us more time to spend on the things we like won't it? open source might be a portal to a new way of living. having advanced software availible for free is a improvement. just take a look at the base schools, look at the garbage software they are running, that it doesn't suite you as a person is of non importance. to the world as a whole it is a great improvement, try thinking in the larger picture. you can't stop this evolution.:)
don't worry...
they will release a windows "patch" very soon after samba 4 gets deployed, integrate there smb/cifs stuff with.net winfs and introduce other features that will make a samba server unusable with longhorn clients.
excuse me... but static linking applications would tripple it's size, if not more. just imagine konqy and the 44 libs it uses (on my system that is) compiled static together.. it would become VERY large. then add kicker, kdestop, kopete, amarok, kontact and all the programs it uses... it would cost you gigs of discspace for a decent kde install.
well, skype is a nice packaged application. download, install and use, in the easiest meaning of the words. being crossplatform (windows, mac, linux) + easy is what makes skype nice, another great thing is that you have a contact list, you can search for people, etc, etc. that's a big plus too, the interface is also very simple and does just what it must. sure any other easy to use cross platform voip program with contactlist and good interface could replace this program, but the point is.... I haven't found another that makes things so easy yet.
the soundblaster live (with alsa driver) is a nice way to go, because it has hardware mixing. so you can actually play multiple sounds at the same time. (like having 2 mplayer programs playing video + sound, having xmms open playing mp3, and playback your window manager sounds using arts...) alsa also has oss emulation so you will even be backwards compatible.
konqy is not integrated into kde. it might look that way because it is shipped by default. but it's very easy to get rid of. by integrated as IE we mean that the OS is so dependend on the presence of it, that it is just freaking impossible to remove it.
compatible doesn't mean they have implented it or something, it means that the card has the ability to support it. but this indeed seems old news. the dutch site tweakers. http://print.tweakers.net/?nieuws/33801 reported on 11 august that opengl 2.0 was ready.
don't worry, it will be shipped on every pc there is for sale... after that it all the companies will upgrate because they have service contracts and stuff or need feature xyz. longhorn will come, and people will use it. if it would only be for the eye candy. (the main reason 99% of the people i know like xp so much.)
winFS doens't seem very usefull in my eyes. it's just a layer on top of ntfs. in the end (windows 2012) you'll see they rewrite it to be a true filesystem. reiser4 seems to do this the right way. having a nice filesystem that you can extend all the time using plugins. I think microsoft wastes a lot of time by doing this in 2 steps. I also understood that winFS is "My Documents" only (or something like that) and cannot be used on the entire harddisk (atleast not in longhorn).
the kernel seems to have a rsync mirror. I haven't tried it yet, but that way you would be able to download the kernel in cvs style by only downloading what you need. this ofcourse only has a adventage when you download new kernel versions all the time, but most people that download from kernel.org seem to do just that. I also like the all in one package. this way I don't have bother 'bout searching for supported hardware. if it ain't in linus tree, it's not worth it for me.
I myself use kerberos v5 with a dictionary checks and simple password checks. on my system, you wouldn't be able to get away with a 123456 password. but I do have to admit it is quite some work to get it properly intergrated with your, ftp, ssh, kerbolized nfsv4, openldap, postfix, cyrus imap, etc, etc... It really took me years before It was ready and usable, but in the end it was really worth it. (for me) the users however are still whining about having to change there password every 2 months, but hey, I had to spend years to get them decent security, now those lazy asses are also going to use it.
I do browse a lot of websites every day, and I don't really find any REAL sites anymore, almost all of them have are now using mediaplayer... even the pr0n sites switched! the only use for realplayer I can see now is that I can legally use it for my clients without having to fear a patent war...
like.... the kernel?

it is possible to get s3tc using dri driverst c.html
http://www.nuclearelephant.com/papers/s3
but i agree this is not the way to go(tm)
I can only find a rpm based install. but my distro doesn't support rpm... :( does anyone know of a non-rpm release? I'd love to test it out.
well, there sure was a possibility that someone back then would have invented it right?
so first you create a managed runtime... .net?
to run on every cpu....
and then you write a cpu for
doesn't really make sense.

on the screenshots I see them running.... linux.
it doesn't seem to run windows...
this alone rules it out of being an alternative to vmware.

qt4 also makes a great promise for startup times. but we won't see that until kde 4.
I heard people say rekall is a good app and kexi also moves in the right direction. http://www.koffice.org/kexi/screenshots.php

with ..... two buttons?
well, it might ease live for people who want to switch from windows to linux and own tons of vb apps...

are you running fedora core? fedora seems to behave pretty bad when using konqy.

well, it's seems like a brenchmark. the amd is 40% slower and also 'bout 40% cheaper. so I'd say it's a draw!

this is all old news.... this was all anounced on slashdot 700 times
