well, according to the dutch site tweakers, (www.tweakers.net) the linux kernel itself is possibily violating 286 patents, including 27 owned by Microsoft and 98 from 'Linux friendly' companies like the 60 from IBM, 20 from HP and 11 from Intel, and NO, it wasn't SCO that searched this stuff out. patents are one big mess, it's very nearly impossible to create compatible (as in, windows send file, linux users uses it, edits, send back, windows users uses it) open source products without violating patents. patents prevent software creators to compete with each other, therefore, patents must die!
And why not, the only thing the end user uses his desktop for is pressing the icons for the apps he wants to use, just openoffice, mozilla, a mail client and 99% of the users are happy
Well, according to the dutch site tweakers.net site, ati plans to have better drivers before the doom 3 release date. the reason they give for losing in the brenchmarks is because they haven't done any coding at all. if I understood everything right, there is going to be a "Doom III opengl ATI driver"
Is there a better choice for/tmp ? I use tmpfs for that, it rules in speed because it doesn't have to sync back to the harddisk all the time. (if we crash who gives a damn 'bout the data there anyway) + it is automaticly cleaned up after reboot, that's quite nice 2.
reiser4 is one of the two projects I am interested in the most. reiser4 does a good job with data integrity because all low level operations are done atomic, normal filesystems (including ntfs) guaranty only that the integrity of the tree will stay intact, they guaranty NOTHING about the actual data stored in it. the other is nfsv4, when using it in combination with kerberos v5 (trough rpcsec_gss) it allows users to securely access there files. the currently used auth_unix is equel to NO security at all. the bad thing is that both killer features (reiser4 and rpcsec_gss) aren't ready yet. but I deffinitly see these to as more promising then anything that microsoft has promised up to today.
Or using linux components to make windows cheaper. microsoft already used the bsd tcp/ip stack once, what would stop them from that kind of stuff, again and again. windows will not stop as an operating system any time soon, even if nobody would buy there software, they still have enough money to live on for the next 200 years...
even IF the goddamn would have been fast enough, there is still a PowerPC cpu in it, so it would be way hard to get the "linux" version to run on it. (you need cpu emulation because pc linux doom III uses x86). the "best" chance would be to run mac os under the linux gamecube edition using something like www.maconlinux.org and running the "when it's done" mac version of doom III under that. but all the files would have to come from a network server since the gamecube lacks a harddisk, but that should be doable using nfs or simulair. anyway, it will look g33k if you get it running, but it will be darn slow and probably not the worth the time and money.
don't be that happy just yet, the linux release is scheduled AFTER the windows release, and the mac release is scheduled "when it's done". so if you are running linux or mac (like me), you might want to consider not holding your breath.
don't know 'bout that, I do know that mail that is send out by kmail will be both readable in html as in plaintext. (allways on) so the reciever can choose what he wants.
Well, you can still use them as thin clients.
that way you'll probably still be able to run kde6.0 on them. (if the Xserver guys don't make to many wars) seriously though, we can't always stay in the past. linux needs to have a full blown desktop availible if it wants to reach the desktop market. geeks like you and I can still use windowmaker of something else incredibily basic. kde is a great desktop for end users, and it becomes better every release.
The greaters advantage is that is has ultra high compression. this is where we look at citrix like bandwith usage. multiple connection over one 56k line. vnc really sucks on slow connections.
Indeed, I can play 90% of my dosgames under dosbox (granted, it needed a dual and mp 2200, but who cares:p) and more and more Windows games start to work for me under wine and winex. wine is overall better when it comes to directx 1 to 7 games. winex becomes much better at directx 8/9 games every release!
It's a good thing for them to fix up directx 8.1 as well. or we will end up having half working versions of everything. also note directx 8.1 and 9 share much code. so working out things in the right order also seems to be the right way of doing stuff.

jup, it does!

"because they haven't done any coding at all" I ment OpenGL coding here...

reiser4 has a plugin for this...

I've heard words online telling they needed money and are currently working on something else before finishing reiser4.
correction.... windows stole NOTHING bye using the bsd stack, it was perfectly legal for them to use that software that way.

well, you can preorder it on tuxgames, so I suppose it will be somehow boxed by them...

gates kills open source jobs that would be?

I ment html mail composing ofcourse. and I almost forgot the virus and spam wizards
kmail with html mail, and hopefully full kolab groupware. kde3.3 is gonne rock!
Well, only very limited. mono is working on the Windows.Forms Implementation. once that is finished it will "run". (but look like wine, because it is)
Read Again, he said "closed-source"

the one running the sco kernel.
