    Well that was kinda my point. There's quite a few people around here that hate Sun, IBM, SCO, Microsoft to an equally venomous degree. The kind of person that hears that Bill Gates breathes on a daily basis and instinctively starts holding their breath in defiance of his monopoly.

    One reason might be that spammer's can't guess your email address by dictionary searching. Case in point: my wife set up an email account some years ago and used a name based on a "Peanuts" character. For various reasons she didn't use the account and I'm fairly sure she did not sign up for any mailing lists etc. so the name was not published. Then all of a sudden she gets 20-30 porn messages a day into the account, because some spammer decided to try

    Of course, that's only relevant if you reboot frequently. (Please everyone, put aside the obvious /. meme about Windows and the BSOD). On the other hand, if you are talking about a couple of minutes per day to start work then it's comparable to, say, an extra toilet break.

    I know nothing about Newham specifically, but the perception in many parts of the UK are that many local councils are not well run. It might well be that a half-decent audit would find potential savings whoever the sponsor and whatever the IT system in use.

    My local authority caused a stink when it bought expensive laptops for all the councillors - because it was later suggested that these machines were hardly ever used. Small example, but such is local politics.

    Also, and I mean no disrepect to anyone in local government IT in the UK, but it's not well paid compared to the private sector - there are plenty of PHBs I guess.

    If it's "cool", perhaps it was something different and non-obvious. Perhaps it was innovative. Using the phrase cool and then comparing it to something as mundane as buying and selling stuff rather undermines the argument.

    Unfortunately this view of the Septuagint has no direct historic evidence, so ultimately accepting it is an act of faith. It's true that the gospel writers were familiar with the septuagint, judging from the ways in which the OT is quoted. And it's an extremely valuable witness to the text alongside the Masoretic and other Jewish sources. But there's no way of *proving* that it's the best witness to the text.

    Eh? Even if we assume that the Masoretic text is "full of errors" ,how can we know? By comparison to older hebrew manuscripts - SOME OF WHICH WE HAVE. So, use the older fragements! Yes, use the Septuagint as one witness to the text, but don't throw out Hebrew texts, that's just plain daft.

    I have read the article, and still don't understand why calling an instance member function d.GetWeekDay() is somehow to be deprecated in favour of GetWeekDay(d). Making "set" methods instance but "get" methods static introduces an asymmetry in design which is surely confusing? And there is no difference in efficiency, I would guess.

    I agree with part of the interview - i.e. overuse of O-O can be a bad mistake - but I'm lost on this one.

    Hmmm. So what you're saying is "if you don't like this bit of reporting, don't read it". Quite bizarre. It may be biased/wrong or whatever, but you won't do yourself any favours by sticking your head in the sand. There are quite enough people who don't RTFA at the moment. Please don't make it worse.
