give the existing population work (instead of just importing more people), and give them the opportunity to lift themselves out of poverty.

So I like the idea but it's kind of a chicken vs egg thing.

High tech companies need HIGHLY skilled workers. Most of the unemployed autoworkers in Detroit are not highly skilled.

So unless you are including in your proposal a big training budget (and that's assuming people have the desire and or aptitude to become highly skilled) it won't work.

However, there are a number of support roles (like garbage collection and construction) that are NOT highly skilled but that will go up as people get imported. Think about it, import 50,000 people and they'll all want to eat at restaurants, have people fix their mcmansions (and maybe hire gardeners) etc., etc.

So actually in this case maybe the government does have a good idea.

So Ayn would, I think, be happier to see bounties than Facebook saying, hey, give me this info for free.

And while they probably do have a security team, by crowdsourcing something like this you allow many, many, many more people to look at Facebook and fix it.

NYC is the best place in the world for the rich. I'd love a chance to live there, and be rich.

The BIG problem with living in NYC is the amount of money you need. If you have $100 million in the bank or a job that pays $250k a year, your life style here is sweet (and completely unmatched anywhere else in the world).

If, on the other hand, you do a "normal" job, life is much harder.

Of course, some people like the trade off. If you don't mind living in a closet you may prefer the night life here to small town America, even if the rent on your Manhattan studio would cover the costs of a McMansion in small town, USA.

NY Pizza is different then Chicago pizza, and that's a different type then found in my home town.

This is true in Italy as well. Pizza in Rome is very different then pizza in Napoli.

And there are many places with Pizza. Pide, a Turkish pizza is perhaps one of my favorites and looks nothing like what you would probably consider Pizza (you make the dough into a "boat" and fill with the toppings. This allows you to do things like put raw egg inside and cook)

That's not even remotely plausible. The first and only thing surviving the invention of a writing system certainly wouldn't be a large codex.

Funny because the fact that such a large codex survives, would seem to indicate that indeed it's possible for it to have happened.

Writing systems based on an alphabet are, by definition, phoenetic. If you were to learn chinese, you'd probably use the roman alphabet to write down notes on how to spell it phoenetically.

Given that there probably are not a whole lot of speakers of Ancient Aztec it stands to reason maybe a phonetic representation of Aztec wasn't something easily figured out. (Remember the Navajo code talkers were unbreakable during world war II).

And, this is consistent with what is known about the manuscript if you check the wikipedia article. Specifically:

The language is quite unlike most European languages.
Between 20-30 glyphs could explain the entire text
The language resembles a natural language.

  17. Re:This nonsense only works in corporations on You Might Rent Features & Options On Cars In the Future · · Score: 1

    Well maybe not.

The reason this sort of model works with, say, cellphones is because instead of having to fork out the cost of a new phone, you get it at a substantially reduced price.

If automakers do this and they don't actually lower the price of the cars, it won't take off.

But what if instead of paying $20k for a car, you only pay $5k and you "lease" only the features you use?

Some people (like with phones) will prefer to buy the cars out right. But some people (like with phones) will enjoy the lower monthly payments.

There are lots of other examples out there. Flights for instance -- pay for cheap seats but pay double the cost of your ticket for bags. And consumers reward this paradigm because ultimately, if you are not using all the bells and whistles, you may prefer to pay for what you just use. Alternatively, you may just not want a lower bill and be willing to accept it.
