"Hewlett-Packard and Philips said Wednesday that they have developed a content-protection system for DVDs, designed to protect users from burning "protected" DTV broadcasts."
In other news, 15 years ago a woman in Lithuania gave birth to a kid who will crack the new scheme shortly after his sixteenth birthday.
Just hope whatever machine is keeping me alive is Y2K_38 compliant. In all, it's not my problem. If my life support machine fails it will most certainly no longer be my problem.
Besides we will probably find a way to blow ourselves up before then.
Now, if my holodeck stops working that will most certainly be a problem and heads will roll!!!
What a silly description to this article. Put it half the title (socializing) and then give a description about the other half (t.v.) Then watch them morph into one idea and have everyone question how one is the other.
Only on/.
Kind of disturbing. Immortality for the elite. If you are rich or a genious you will be allowed to live. You will be part of the alpha population. The betas will be disposable and feed the alphas. They will sweep the sidewalks, donate a liver if needed and then be disposed of. Betas will wear dunce caps at all times just so they know who they are. Better yet tattoo a big B on the forehead at birth. Your future is mapped.
I've had a flashback to grade10 and Brave New World.
Much more probable then "Hey cool, we'll never die....we all live happily ever after".
Pass the soma.
Why don't any banks have pki as an option for authentication? You have a password and a private key. I know some people will say it is too complicated, but why not have it as an option for those willing to take the extra precautions?
I agree. If it's a "must have" then buy it. If it's an "I'd like to see that but am not sure I will like it" then rent. If it's a "piece of shit" then ignore it. Don't get me wrong, I love bittorrent, but only for stuff that I can't get otherwise. Besides, Pokerstars runs like crap when I'm downloading large files. Not acceptable.;-)
****Absolutely**** I've done them all (except flipping burgers) + a whole lot of other demoralizing shit. IT is the "cat's ass" compared to most other crap I've done in my life. 37.5 hours a week, benefits, weekends off, pension plan, 4 weeks of holidays and sick leave I can accumulate. Ever been a janitor at a Bingo Hall? F*cking disgusting!
How about just saying; "Our stuff sucks less and will hopefully make things run better for you. If it doesn't then we need to talk, so we can figure out the problem and fix it. Either way, we will stand behind our product, that's a guarantee!"
Content providers need a paradigm shift in the way they think about digital rights management.
The more they say no, the more fun it is to fire up BT and just get it.
Instead of whining about lost sales why not package the stuff to make it attractive for me to go to them. I don't care what they prevent TIVO from doing, it will end up on the net in a nice compact avi file.
Start rewarding your loyal customers and cultivate relationships with them instead of wagging the finger all the time and pissing on everyting. Educate, respect and deliver.
Nothing more pig headed then a boardroom full of of old white haired guys in fancy suits.
Idiots.
What is the chance of getting everyone out there behind their own reverse firewall? Slim, very slim. However, blocking outbound port 25 at the ISP's router is the way to do it at the flip of a switch and still maintain the flexibility of opening it up to those users who have a business need or have demonstrated the "know how" to run their own mailserver.
We can't even get all ISP's to block port 25, how you gonna get aunt Jane and kasaa loving cousin Sally to bother going down to Costco to pick up a router with reverse firewalling built in.
a) freedom of conscience and religion;
b) freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression, including freedom of the press and other media of communication;
c) freedom of peaceful assembly; and
d) freedom of association
I am free to bitch about my government as much as I want.
I did read your post. It's titled "Umm...Security?" and then you go on to say you would rather have everything on your laptop, presumably because you feel more secure that way. If I misunderstood your meaning then my apologies.
I agree with you about the banking stuff of course and the article does say this is not a thin client so I guess we'll see how secure it can be. In the meantime I'll keep using my laptop too.
Because there's nothing more secure then travelling with a laptop now is there. It gets stolen or falls off the table and your f*cked.
That's kind of the same mentality as saying I will never buy anything online because it's not secure, yet you feel perfectly safe handing over your card to anyone to physically swipe.
We had a fire in our rec room. Brand new home built Athlon system turned to charcoal. It was kind of creepy because all the components were still there, they just looked like charcoal. The 17inch flat screen LCD just kind of melted over. Laptop beside it melted too. HP cp1700 printer was just a power supply and a metal rod of charcoal. That sucked.
Enough of the air tight, vacuum sealed buildings already. Windows you can crack open would be great. Of course it depends on the air quality where you live I suppose.
Also, no beige anywhere. Where I work I can't even see a window and the crapper is right across the isle. Nothing like the smell of someone elses after lunch dump to motivate you.
I hope you don't get modded flamebait because it's a valid concern. However, it's way too early to say the project is in trouble. For crying out loud, it's just a Wired article pointing out the drop dead obvious. Migrations are tough, we just did a migration to W2K Advanced Server where I work(I know I know...what can I say...not my decision) and you wouldn't believe the hitches along the way. The lock-in I am seeing is downright scary when I step back and look at the big picture.
Give this project time and it will blossom, and that ~12Mil will be insignificant in comparison to the savings down the road.
Being a pioneer is not easy, and Munich will end up better off in the long run.

I like it and will be back often to see the site grow. Great idea.
Not sure how this is different from CNN et al now.

Hope I'm not spending all my time patching Windows 3000 when the time comes. That would be sad. Kill me! Please........kill me!!!!!

Oh! And don't forget the Bullshit Generator.

After the announcement great joy and chatter could be heard throughout the cricket community.

I've smuggled a monkey into the office and trained him to do my job. Now I sit around all day with my feet up throwing him peanuts. hehe....it's fun!

ummmm.... no, they can't! Did you just make that up?
Check out the Canadian Charter of rights and Freedoms.
Everyone has the following fundamental freedoms:
a) freedom of conscience and religion;
b) freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression, including freedom of the press and other media of communication;
c) freedom of peaceful assembly; and

I missed all the fuss on LT....
That would really bother me if there was actually something worth watching on T.V.

Doubtfully, but if you are going to spy on people don't you think something less conspicuous then an 18" f/8 might be in order?
