FileSystems always have been Databases. There are so many design options that we have many great FS that focus in different areas of that 'narrow' design space.
Any metabase IS an add-on tech for a FS unless it merges functionality with some fundimetal structure, like directories for example. As long as it retains the old function, one could argue that its an add-on for that component of the FS.
Metabases SHOULD be FS independent that use kernel notifications like Spotlight does-- indexing is slower than the notification overhead anyway.
I'd like some APIs for notification & metabase so we can replace Spotlight with something that indexes FILENAMES!

sure wavelets are nice and all, but i'm happy with how jpeg works. Besides, its faster on weaker devices. Mac OS X has Jpeg 2000 support, and having tried it, its slower and doesn't appear to me to be much better that old jpeg--- not worth the hassle.

Unless they replace MS, I don't see anybody trying to make a kernel when its easier to port the few useful parts to other OS.

Don't forget about the military advantage! Control over of the earth-moon gravity well. It takes a lot to "go around" that side. Not to mention a base on the moon is a better platform.
Going back to the moon is considered by many a 1st step to mars, but more importantly, it keeps NASA stuck funding stupid crap instead of other more worthwhile projects; such as earth studies.

Gas corps tend to move in packs than really compete. They should also not be allowed to own/control so gas stations, which only makes them worse.
In some states, like MN, we have laws that do restrict gas pricing to an extent already. They were designed to the big corps couldn't kill off the smaller gas stations.
We all know how good the chinese are at making cheap junk and that they can launch stuff into space. A bag of marbles sent into orbit which end up hitting your stuff at 1000s of miles per hour would be a cheap way to end a space war. Space junk is already a concern today. Intentionally designed devices could make space off limits for quite some time, and destroy or damage what is already up there. F=ma
Anybody ever think it may be good to have apple end up in a monopoly on this? The industry is clearly unable to push them around now. Later, they may have more power... Either apple gets power over the industry or their monopoly is split; during which there will be a great opportunity to change the way the music business works.
