Well I would definitely agree that ZIP works, I would also say that gzip, and bzip are used all the time and also work. On top of that rar, gzip, and bzip achieve better compression ratios.
But what I really find interesting is where the line is on bundling software. I use OSS on my desktop, but I see that Microsoft is going to start bundling a compression program. This seems like a utility that belongs in the base system. But a media player, which also seems to make sense, should not be bundled.
We'll lie low, developing our technology and build robots. Oh not to kill... not at first..... And then, one night, in their sleep... they'll never know what hit them.

A homicide bomber is someone that blows themself up with the intent of blowing others up.
Was Theodore Kaczynski a "homicide bomber"?
How about Timothy McVeigh?
They are both homicide bombers and not suicide bombers. The term homicide bomber is less accurate then suicide bomber if your describing somebody who kills themselves along with there targets.
Just because it negatively affects Microsoft for once doesn't mean that it's good in any way.
You may be wrong about that in this case. If Microsoft hires a lobbyist group which manages to get the ear of somebody in congress, this may be the first step to real reform on the whole IP pantent craziness.
Remeber that MS has more pull then a bunch of people who complain on slashdot, but yet never do anything.
I feel a bit more secure with one of the largest companies in the world backing up my software than some college kids working out of their dorms.
Your point would seem to make sense, except Microsoft is just as likely to decide that a product does not make them enough money, and discontinue it. When they do that, you have no recourse. If you were using OSS then you can hire your own guy to maintain or improve it. If your using open formats, then you could just switch programs an not think twice about it.
So, having said that, doesn't it make sense that the government should mandate open formats so that they're protected from the OSS coder losing his broadband and MS locking them in? If MS Office really does the job the best, then they should not be afraid to use an open documented format. This goes for any product.
this will be great when someone quietly locks 10 years worth of documents he created before getting laid off
Can't a user already just delete the files before he gets layed off? I think the recovery procedures would be the same. And for that matter he could gpg encrypt them before he leaves.
I think that it would be hard for that to hold water when there probably is thousands of e-mails from the same 35-week time period that are far more mundane and much less worth keeping:
remember that these are mainly office paper pushers, not computer geeks.
I would contend that "office paper pushers" would probably have less trouble with a migration to OpenOffice from MS office for example then a poweruser. I say this because powerusers know all the shortcut keys and are more tied to the features and quirks of the system as a whole.
Simple users still know how to type into a Word or Writer document. In both apps, the save and print buttons still look the same.
Perhaps they want to run vmware on systems that need to use the apps that are not yet ported to Linux, which would seem like a sound strategy.

Bittorrent doesn't give me a way to look at how many completed downloads the file has had
If you goto your trackers URL, you will see the number of completed downloads next to the hash of the file that your serving. This will let you know how popular your file is.
The only thing I can think of would be nice to display a powerpoint presentation from my PDA -- however, a laptop would still do better.
This can help blur the lines between a PDA and a laptop. So today you have a PDA that can be held in your hand, and has the horse power and storage to play a 2 hour movie, the only thing it is missing is a nice 17" display.
So, if you have a little display that can be folded up with the PDA/laptop, along with a nice folding keyboard, You can watch movies, type email , surf the web, etc with a nice interface that is smaller and weighs less.
I can't quite figure out whether they have cheated on hyperthreading
I'm sure they did not disable hyperthreading on some tests in order to make the results better for the Dell's:)
his screenshot looks like it's on a Windows machine to me. No antialiasing...

... Also, what you think is Windows-style anti-aliasing is actually NO anti-aliasing. That's right, anti-aliasing is DISABLED in that screenshot, I turned it off.
If more people followed it, then perhaps we would not have so much NOx in the air in the first place.
