Why not lie about a degree?
Seems that everybody and their mama lies about everything, including the President and the Congress.
If your are better than a degree holder, then you should have no remorse and think of it as a favor to the HR person that will grant your interview.
Without reading the whole article. I believe that with all the muscle that Google (Motorola) could put behind this claim, the case has more to do with strategy.
It's a case to better loose and then later refer to. As the first poster said, -"Tech can be obvious but round corners can't?"
Sometimes when I go to long thinking on a problem, I stop and have a beer or a glass of wine, a bit after that, the brains changes the way it thinks about the problem.
Often times this brings a better/faster abstract solution and worst/buggier code.
