    Redirect all traffic from unknown users to a local webserver, which contains a usage agreement. After the user clicks "Accept" add their MAC address to the list of known users, and maybe remove it after 24 hours or so.

    Mnemonic for 'Halt and Catch Fire', any of several undocumented and semi-mythical machine instructions with destructive side-effects, supposedly included for test purposes on several well-known architectures going as far back as the IBM 360. The MC6800 microprocessor was the first for which an HCF opcode became widely known. This instruction caused the processor to toggle a subset of the bus lines as rapidly as it could; in some configurations this could actually cause lines to burn up. Compare killer poke.

    Having low load times is something Nintendo is very good at (and was the main reason the 64 used cartridges). Playing a Gamecube game it's rare to see a load time of more than .5 seconds.

    In most competitions, including the World Finals, the judges will issue "time limit exceeded" and "run-time error", which can be caused by an infinite loop and a segfault, for instance. But this year the judges stated that intentionally crashing your program would be grounds for disqualification (I am almost certain this policy is new).

    In many games, such as chess, there have been observed regional and national variations in particular skills. This is likely due simply to the fact that players geographically closer play each other more often and come to focus on those particular skills most effective against the locally popular style of play.

    Remember that only 10% of commercially produced software is ever sold. I would happily accept a 10% decline in the software industry as the price for living in a Free world.

    I think that even if Nintendo was able to remake Mario 64 for the GBA, it would not sell very well, simply because massive 3-d graphical environments really require a larger screen. In fact, I think the low-end graphics on the GBA do a lot to encourage creativity; the number of RPGs and puzzle-type games is at its highest now since the days of SNES.

    Actually, I remember that being roughly their answer on an old FAQ. Their current one says more obliquely:
    Trolltech supports free software development on platforms where contributing to Free Software/Open Source development is part of the platform strategy. At the time being it does not seem natural for us to release a free edition for Qt/Windows.

    This is the best way of putting it I've heard. The market Nintendo is not going after is the young teen market, who (in my day) played games like Mortal Kombat because they were bloody, even though they weren't much fun as games. I personally like the idea that the Gamecube actually looks like a toy rather than the monolith from 2001.
