i had this problem too. many people have. it seems to be a hardware problem with the battery. i took my ibook to the apple store in soho. i told them what was up, they gave me a new battery (under warranty) in 10 minutes and i went home. since then i haven't had any more problems. give apple a call about your problem. you might have to bitch a little but hopefully they'll send you a new battery.
i don't know if that counts. frame rates in flash were so slow in the previous release that navigating a flash site was almost impossible. i've done a lot of flash work lately and the craptastic performance in Safari was the main reason i wasn't using it. now i can. i am happy.
after watching the preview it seems that they are not skipping Dune Messiah, just putting the two together. it shows the bomb go off (where Paul is blinded) and the childrens as infants. later it shows Leto and a young adult in the desert and Paul has lost his sight. so unless i don't remember the books so well, this is both, right?
i'm also a UNIX user but i have to agree with some other posters that ACL's are a good thing. it's one of the MS things (yes, there aren't many) that i like.
will we finally catch our own tail and eat part of our ass?...
thanks for making me laugh today.
in regards to the disscussion, i'm a recent college grad (in CS) with a pretty decent CV for my age and i've been out of work for 6 months. outsourcing may not be the main reason for this, but it certainly is one reason (course another may be that i may be an idiot).
this is just my understanding of the grandparent's post and the GPL versus the BSD license. i don't intend to start a flame war, ok? if i'm wrong, correct me. it's the only way i'll learn...
if a large company was to do what with linux (under the GPL) what Apple did, they would invest a signifigant amount of cash into development costs to produce a desktop focused, user-friendly OS. under the GPL they would have to release their source. this would put competitors at an advantage and also allow a free release of their OS making it difficult to profit.
for free software and open-source developers the GPL is great. it allows us to learn and grow from the existing codebase. but for a publicly traded company, it simply does not make sense. why would i spend money on OS X if i could get all the source for free? or for that matter if another company could get Apple's source (Apple is only an example) and produce a similar product which they release for free.
again, if am i wrong correct. but this is why i think the BSD license is more attractive to commercial developers.
i did. well, i didn't desert linux or openBSD, i still have a linux box. but i did buy an ibook and it is my main machine (email, web, etc.)
i assume that most switchers are doing just that. they probably have a linux box still, but for common uses they perfer an OS that has the functionality of a UNIX box (terminal, NFS, etc) with the features of an idiot proof mac.
i like my ibook because i never have to screw with it (and it's so small...)
try it and see. the result is the OS X equivalent to a BSOD in windows or the bomb icon in OS 9. the desktop will gray and a dialogue will appear (in a number of languages) telling you to hard reset.
As far as I know, Microsoft does not make or sell any Linux software
huh?
Lots of Mac users use Windows boxes too
yes, perhaps some might. but you'll have a harder time finding someone that frequently switches between macOS and windows as opposed to linux and windows. i'm speaking for home use, of course. you can't judge from what people are forced to use at work.
my point is: perhaps mac users use MS software. they're usually honest about it. linux users (not all) on the other hand, violently bash MS while still booting in windows every day. look at the average slashdot reader.
i'm not saying anyone is better and i'm not trying to start a flame war, but saying most linux users don't use any MS software is complete bull. sure, they run linux as their main OS, but how many of them dual boot into windows or have a windows machine around somewhere? please...
get off you soapbox
i find this completely irrelevant. in 20 years when these children are in the "business" work force i doubt that windows (as it exists currently) will be around. sure Microsoft will probably be, and they're products may still be as prevalent, but that they're little GUI menus will still be set up the same? i doubt it.
most of us grew up using Apple II's. did that seriously affect our ability to use a computer today? most of the non-tech savvy people working today didn't use a computer at all in their youth.
sorry, you can argue OSS in the classroom in a lot ways, but not this one.

i apologize for the amount of typos in that. i assume most can figure out what i meant to say.
Leto and a young adult
Leto as a young adult
etc

thank you for an informative post. man, slashdot would be so much nicer if everyone (or at least most people) was/were like this.
flamebait? moderators... why do you waste your points?

haha, that made me laugh. pretty good idea

perhaps off topic, but it will also cause kernel panic (at least in my network without fail).
try to mount a share from an local smb server that does not exist. cancel it, then try to mount one that DOES exist.
ie. from the finder command-k
smb://10.0.1.3 #does not exist
cancel it,
smb://10.0.1.4 #does exist
the second attempt will time out and the machine will have to be hard reset.
maybe this is just me, but this has been happening to me since 10.1.5

i have a IMAP mail account on mail.app (1 account, not .mac) and i have no problems displaying folders (local and on server).
i've never heard anything positive said about lexx before. that show was terrible...
sorry, that just made me laugh. haha
