Ah, but don't forget that there's no DirectX on OS X either, and the percentage of Mac desktops can only go up. When implementing an engine with OpenGL, it's relatively easy to write a Mac port - and the windows implementation will run much better in Wine.
This is the typical academic boil-the-oceans scenario, and I doubt it would ever work - we can't even migrate to IPv6, which is backwards-compatible with the current setup, while theirs isn't (by design, no less).
I'd recommend for you 'Fast Times at Fairmont High' by Vernor Vinge (Noveletta(?)), Accelerando by Charles Stross (available online), and Diaspora by Greg Egan (Which is not that scientifically accurate, but the concepts are mind-blowing).
While I have no experience with FFXI, I'm playing EvE Online, which has an anacrchocorporatist economic system, with corporations being the traditional guilds. The games even allows a corporation to issue stocks which can be traded, and a corp can distribute dividends on the stocks. It even has historic price tracking for goods...
Actually, I have visited the site, both now and the first time it was mentioned, and I've read the letter too. While the site is parody, the stuff sold on cafepress with the 'get a first life' logo is in a quasi-grey area, and Linden Labs, by law, has to either defend their trademark or lose it.
Actually, Linden Labs had to permit or deny use of their logo, or risk losing the trademark. This is a clever move by them both from the legal side and the PR it generates.
My experience contradicts yours. I have a WoW account upgraded to TBC, and I cannot even log on from a non-TBC installation (correctly patched to the latest version). Further, after installing TBC all the 2.0.x patches are being applied, even the humongous 200+MB 2.0.1...
Not living in a suburbia-ueber-alles country has its benefits: 1. Max 20 minutes between busses, and that on Sunday @ 23:30. 2. Prepaid tickets 3. We had some of these once, the dricer stopped and asked them to get out. And everybody else supported him. 4. As the previous poster said, bags. Also, almost each square has its own mini-market. 5. That is actually the fault of the bus? 6. True, we don't have service from 01:00 to 05:00. 7. Most sub-1000-people settlements have 2 to 3 bus stops...
It's easier to just implement an FCGI connector for tomcat than reimplement the whole stack. And you just can't run Java under UML, as 64 megs just aren't enough for the VM (much less the whole OS), and beyond that you get into the dedicated server price range. Note that shared hosting of java webapps is both possible and secure, it just needs someone knowledgeable with ample time available.
No. For better or worse, PHP is easier to administer from an ISPs perspective - it integrates directly in the web server, you just deal with files and possibly their permisssions. With java you have to have a separate server (that is relatively heavyweight) for the various components, you need to map URLs to that server, and the users can't update their apps by themselves, the ISP has to do it.
Java servlets have been designed for the enterprise, and it shows....

Nope, you can't. The users need (at least for the first time they visit your site) to type their OpenID address to your site, they will then get redirected to *their* OpenID provider site to verify what data should be made available to your site. Oh, and AFAIK noone uses OpenID for CC info...
Not in most parts of Europe, as here the caller pays everything. Most companies have introduced contract terminations if you don't call from your phone once in six months...
Eve offers a free 14-day trial, it certainly won't hurt to check it out. Two notes only: the tutorial takes about 2-3 hours to play through (and it really does pay to follow it), and don't try it on tuesday - a new content patch is arriving. Otherwise, have fun! If possible, do try to find a corporation that is willing to take you in despite the fact that you are on a trial account, it does make a difference.
I've played WoW, and switched over to Eve Online several months back. While WoW's PvP didn't win me over, I find that in Eve it actually means something, and it's far, far more integral to the player experience than the simple Alliance-Horde split in WoW.
Nope, that's for GeForce2 and oldxer cards. NVidia Linux drivers are one-size-fits-all, just like the windows version. I really hope he didn't use the driver from nvidia.com...
Oh yes, but have you played the previous TES games? The lore is pretty much the only thing that stays the same, considering that they are written from scratch in each iteration...
Look, grey goo exists, and it's called microbes. Just leave food outside for a couple of days, and you'll see. And generalized dissassemblers can't work simply due to not having enough energy/kg available in the environment (unless you use fire, which could be construed to be a general dissasembler...:-) )
Because all "new" artists that get promoted have a contract with their music studio/distributor that makes the iron maiden look positively roomy, spacious and comfortable.
Well, you can manually select the roaming provider on GSM phones, at least here in ye olde Europe, don't know if they have crippled that feature over there...

Duh, just open Knuth, Volume One.

The network plumbing is almost in place, using UPnP, which both Apple and MythTV use to a certain extent...

You really don't want to use that on a laptop for far of burns on legs and hands...

Oh, they do make money from gmail all right - they sell ads. Targetted, usually relevant ads, but they do get paid for them.
