  1. I preordered it a few weeks ago! on Doom 3 Vaporware no More · · Score: 1

About 3 weeks ago I preordered Doom 3 at Best Buy. It came with a nice Pewter Figurine of one of the monsters and a nice-sized poster of the Doom3 logo and monster... Where have you been?

  2. That's Why!! on You've Got Spam: AOL Blocks 1/2 Trillion Spam · · Score: 1

That's why my geriatric father never got the messages I sent him telling him how to buy performance enhancing drugs from online pharmacies so he could "get bigger" while trying to save money to stay out of debt!!! I figured he just didn't care anymore.

  3. Why Smartphones and Pocket PC's? on China Launches Linux-Based Smartphone · · Score: 1

Wouldn't it be more useful to have a phone device that would communicate with a Pocket PC for all of those extra features (handwriting, voice recognition, etc) and the phone would just be used for communicating with the service provider? Make the phones dumber and cheaper but give them a lot of compatibility with PDA's and Pocket PC's, so those do the work for the phones. Is it too much to ask to make my Pocket PC useful with other devices?

  4. ISP Bandwidth costs... on Have You Fought Your ISP Over Bandwidth Limits? · · Score: 1

How much does an ISP actually potentially "lose" if a few clients are using their full bandwidth almost constantly? I mean, that's one high-bandwidth user for every ten that are low to average at best? In my community there about about 30 low bandwidth users to 1 high bandwidth users. By low bandwidth I'm referring to Grandma and Grandpa who check their e-mail at Yahoo once a week on a good week; Mom and Dad who check their stock quotes once a day; and a small business that checks inventory prices once a day. If everyone was a "Normal User" by ISP standards, they'd probably be putting out more bandwidth than what they are now. Right?

  5. If Money's an issue... on Finding Holiday Discounts on iPods? · · Score: 1

Apple products are natoriously pricey! Yeah, this seems like a flame. However, as I am the link to the digital devide among people of my small community, they always want technology if it comes at a low price. From your basic computers to cell phones and, recently, MP3 players. I have never recommended an apple product of any sort because of the insane prices for performance (seriously). I'd continue with more... But I'm already starting to shake with "Apple Hate". Get a Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra. It is just as light and shapely as an Ipod with about $7/GB less for a pricetag. In fact, Amazon.com is currently selling their 30 GB models for $262 with free shipping, can't beat that, guarenteed.

  7. Lithium Ion batteries are great. on Batteries Continue To Suck · · Score: 2, Interesting

I don't think that there is such a battery pitfall. My iPAQ Pocket PC uses it's own built-in lithium battery and that could easily last me a week a regular usesage, with a few games here and there. Furthermore, my Nomad Zen MP3 player gets over 12 hours of life on it's built-in lithium battery, as well. That's well more than I need considering this: It is extremely easy to hook up these built-in battery units to the wall/computer to recharge. When I get home after the day I just plug my pocket pc into the cradle and let it charge and sync, and my MP3 player charges from the USB cable that I already have it plugged into to transfer files. I'm not a mobile phone user, but the two examples I listed are very high on the portable electronics market and I haven't noticed a problem with battery life at all.

  10. My ISP owes it to me!! on P2P Bandwidth Hogging the Net · · Score: 1

Living in the middle of nowhere, but having aDSL (THANKFULLY!!!) makes the monthly bill pretty damn high. On top of that, other users that subscribe to my same ISP include a handful of businessmen that access it at 4:00 PM for about 10 Min to update inventory, a few gamers, or a gaggle of seniors that have been told by their big city children they 'needed it.' I see it this way: My downloading normalizes the usage/subscriber so it makes it seem like the ISP is actually doing its job to its coporate headquarters.

It's great to learn the content, if you're curious. However, you need the degrees the colleges provide. Maybe this will give the field a boost.

I love hearing stories of how the average geek was raised from the earliest of machines. Makes me wonder if my kids will think the same way about me and my experiences with technology today. Sigh... I want to go back and see those glory days you all seem to remember of so fondly.

  14. I've had a lot of "experience" with the problem... on How Do People Evaluate a Web Site's Credibility? · · Score: 1

Most (it could said all) of the people in my high school (students and teachers alike) judge the web site based on the eye candy. On one occasion, a teacher told us to look for truths about Canola oil. Well, most students found some pretty interesting reads that they though to be pretty true, on websites like urbanlegends.com and truthorfiction.com. I was all over that computer lab trying to convince the teacher that the articles were just opinionated, but to no avail!
I even lost a girlfriend because of this. She was a major animal rights activist and had found a website that showed a few pictures and a few "facts" about animal abuse. The page was done completely in flash so it looked nice, even if it was basically someone's homepage. Well, you might be able to imagine I was against her saying this was real and this is what really happens... It didn't end well.
It should be required in grade-school to teach kids about the difference of creditable sites and personal opinions!

It's a little extreme for a high school of 300 students and staff, but I'd like to see how it turns out. Maybe I can talk the Sysadmin and school board into letting me build some Antennae for them so I can access the school network from home to do some... "school work." ;)

I must say that the idea of three-dimensional computer use would be extremely... COOL! However, I think that for quite some time during the first years of development, there will be problems with people having adjustment problems. When I first played the N64--before I had a computer--the 3D graphics alone made me a little naucious after the first few hours. I adjusted all right, but that was being displayed on a 2D screen. Well, perhaps it's just me, but I think this won't be too great in its early years.
