Last I heard, the dental school was the only official body to weigh in on the suspension, and the issue was going to be appealed to the next level up. This decision was probably made among 5 dental school teachers/administrators, all trying to spare the feelings of some crybaby professor.
The major issue is pricing; the 1 TB is about $1300. Now, for the DIY crowd, yes, using Linux you could very easily put together a RAID 5, 1 TB machine for not that much more -- and you are probably going to do it anyway. But for the target market, especially situations in which the IT resources are limited, it's a great machine for the ease of setting it up.
How about Openfiler? Not quite DIY, probably a decent compromise.
And since it supports doing automated back-ups as well as has the serial port to work with a UPS system, you don't have to worry about the whole crapping out and losing all of your data. All in all, a great unit. Price is a concern, but a minor one.
Openfiler also supports checkpointing. Price is almost never a "minor" concern.

Now, I don't expect perfection, but the sheer amount of errors present here is beyond the pale, and renders the reader incapable of trusting the subject matter presented, or taking the author seriously.
I can't tell if you're joking, but I find it a little ironic that you used "amount" where "number" is more appropriate (you can't have a partial error).

The OP probably wants to avoid scp and sftp because they will usually require authentication, whereas with FTP over SSL can still be done anonymously (and then you don't have to leave passwords in your script).
Can you write the GUI in C++, or just utilize an existing GUI written in C++? I can't see any problem linking your C code with someone else's C++ stuff.
