Don't you hate it when finally, after 4 years of reading slashdot, you get the opportunity for a first post, but you don't have ANYTHING witty to say in response to the article?
What I'd like to know is if this really was real, how did they get Windows XP to use a terabyte of RAM when even the latest pentiums can only address something like 64GB?
If you had actually read my comment, you would know that I was not the one that installed BO2K, but the other guy that claimed he didn't. These days, I use TightVNC exclusively.
And, what I didn't mention, is that they told me they would press charged if I didn't clean the desks and my parents didn't pay the fines. If they were actually going to do it, i don't know, but what was I supposed to know? It's fucked either way _especially_ since I didn't install it.
Several years ago (I think '99) I was in an optional school activity that fixed computers and made sure the school network worked etc.. There was one particular trouble computer where apparently students snuck on and installed a whole bunch of nasty stuff. One of the other guys that did this with me installed Back Orifice on it to monitor it (remember, those were the days when it was popular). One day he asked me to go on the linux box and check on that computer (I watched him do it plenty of times, so i knew how). At this point, the head of the computer group came around and saw bo2k. Oooh boy was he pissed. Since this was the time of people using bo2k as a virus, he instantly thought it was.
I told him that I was just checking it for the other guy but when he asked him he knew nothing about it and wondered why there was a virus on the linux box. Fuck.
I got kicked off the computer group, got a total of abut 25 hours of detention cleaning desks, and my parents got to pay the equivalent of about $200 in "damages". And no, I did NOT make slashdot with this.
Well of course since Windows 98 you can't. But, there's a nice way to disable it. I quote the following IRC conversation:
<noob> omg my internet is sooo slow
<me> hey have you heard of the IE proxy trick?
<noob> uum no...
<me> for all your applications, go to the preferences and tell it to use the proxy 127.0.0.1, it makes things go like twice as fast
<me> do it for mIRC too
<noob> ok thx brb

Anybody who has owned and/or played more than a few minutes with either the PS2 or the Xbox will know that there is not much difference in graphical quality between the two. I think the same thing will apply here.
It's not only the power of the GPU, but also how fast and how much data you can get to and from the GPU. Nobody knows, of course, how fast each does this task but from History I just have this hunch that the PS3 will still have comparable graphics to the Xbox. And of course, it's not all about graphics, its about gameplay foremost, where I find the Xbox mostly lacking compared to the PS2 (GTA:SA, 'nuff said)
That is a very interesting idea, removing cancer by regrowing. Maybe certain blood diseases can be cured by "regrowing" the blood piece by piece until theres only clean blood left in the body? then again, blood isn't tissue is it? (I am not a doctor)
I do hope this is applied to humans soon. there are way too many people on waiting lists for heart, liver, kidney transplants.
Also, maybe this is a new hope for people that have gotten limbs amputated, or were born with defects.
I've had this install of Windows XP for about a year now. I never ran any antimalware or antivirus programs on my computer, although I certainly have on other people's computer (usually for money, yay). Upon a prompt by my friend, I ran the whole suite on my computer, betting with him that nothing serious would be found. I bet him $100.
After all was done, he was stunned in disbelief. Only Ad-Aware found something, and that was merely a few "tracking cookies". Why? The only thing I ever used IE for on this computer was to go to mozilla.org to download Firefox. I don't use P2P programs. I do use Bittorrent, but I make sure whatever I get is from a semi-reliable source. I do play games, never got infected from them. I do use AIM, but not through the client (through which I infected my previous installation several times), but instead, Bitlbee on irssi through a shell account. GMail is my email.
Keeping a clean Windows is possible, I've proven it. But nobody tells the average user how to do it.
...(although Linus has retained his job). If Linus had been laid off, slashdot would have instantly turned into a single black page saying something to the effect of "REHIRE LINUS, WE NEED HIM", and all sorts of anti-OSDL propaganda.
I'm sure employers and ISPs around the world alike would rejoice if slashdot is only a single page:)
Currently KDE has to be the best desktop environment (looking at 3.4rc1, I'd have to say they did a really good job). Theres several problems though, its slow , bloated, and still not completely integrated. Mac OS X does a much better job.
And my reasoning for slow: What exactly you have here is Application on top of KDE lib on top of Qt lib on top of X11 lib on top of X11 server on top of Linux, 5 steps. Windows? Application on Windows API on Win32 GUI on Win Kernel, 3 steps. Mac OS X? Application on Cocoa/Carbon/Whatever on Quartz on Darwin, 3 steps. See my point?
One thing that pisses me off that in 12th grade, in "Advanced" classes, I am being taught things for the 3rd or 4th time that I have been taught many years ago. Often, I am not even taught more about the subject, sometimes even less. I believe this is caused by the fact that education simply takes too long.
I think everything I have learned in high school, and this would include the things I'm going to learn in my following last few months, I could have learned in 4 years of applied studies.
I can't think of a reason why it should be a requirement for me to take an Art class if it is not my goal or talent to be an artist. Why should I be forced to take a foreign language when I never plan to leave the country? (I actually believe the world should have a single spoken language, but thats another topic).
What is the point of such involved lectures about obsolete history? I am in full support of learning about relevant items in History but there is no reason for everybody to know the birthday of some random unimportant vice president of long ago, while they pay no attention to applying the important facts of history (the _CAUSES_ of the wars, the resolutions, and why they caused more wars, etc.) to how things work today and how they don't yet shouldn't, and how you can apply it to make life better for yourself and others.
Why would I, in math class, learn about factoring polynomials equally in 8th grade, 9th grade, 10th grade, 11th grade, 12th grade? I am not exaggerating - the teachers taught equally every year the same exact materials on that subject. Learn it once, remember it.
English class should be teaching me Grammar, styles, poetry, but not how to extract senseless unintended meanings of random ramblings which are only deemed poetry because it seems to have a "hidden meaning" and lots of metaphors. I would never use that in life - the only time I would ever is if I was becoming an english major or something, and even that might be doubtful.
The only classes I can't complain about content is my science classes, except for of course once again all the repetition of what is taught. Of course, not all the science that is taught should be taught to somebody who does not intend on doing something related to science.
A basic CORE knowledge can be established in 4 years or less. That includes all the rules of grammar, the basics of math and practical applications in everyday situations, a basics in sciences, a ground foundation in history and HOW IT APPLIES TODAY, a brief introduction to economics and government (not as ridiculoudly verbose as now), as well as brief instruction on common things you need to know to live, such as how to wash clothes and cook simple foods. After that, go right away to "college", but start at a much lower level to be taught only the requisites for your field or group of fields.
If you look at the screenshot, you'll also see that the "advice" that is supposed to be taken is not valid english, and MS products are known to always have correct and valid english. More proof that its fake.
Well, with those numbers I might as well get a 6.80Ghz 1TB RAM 2TB HDD Laptop....

Duke Nukem Forever, anyone? :)

Well of course he is doing the "Developers, Developers, Developers" dance, followed closely by the chair-throwing ritual. It's just like in real life!
Because otherwise he would have gotten in trouble too.

You know, this is such absolute bullshit.

I find the acronym IANAL funny. Whenever I see it, I first read it as "Yes, I [do] Anal". :)

Bye First Amendment, and Thank you so much for serving me all this time. I'll be sure to miss you.
Oh my god, the moderators are such clusterfucks!
Seriously, does anybody still get educated in the USA? Or has this been deemed obsolete by technology?

For the Forth branch of languages, Joy and Factor are missing, which are both "functional forths", so with a large influence from lisp etc.
If I interpret this correctly, I see 6 major language families, which have heavily interbred. These are:
Apart from Joy and Lisp, which are not on the chart, the Forth subtree is the only one without outside influences.
Anyone else notice that theres a huge void between 1992 and 1995, followed with a big surge starting in '95? This is not a coincidence. :)
The update that said it was a joke came after the story came out.
