I really really hate these people. In my version of the internet these people would be shot. Note that my old domain keeps getting bought by company after company. I intended to buy it back when it expired this past June, but another domain hijaker got to it first. It's really pathatic.
this isn't a derect reply, but it kindof is... I have had a few intel-run laptops over the years... I was completely leary of the "speed-step" from the get go, but consider it this way: if your computer can get opperation X done in Y amount of time while consuming Z amount of power (where Y is measured in milliseconds) is it worth upping Z by an order of magnitude to increase Y? the point is that, for the most part, stepping down won't even be noticable. If you think otherwise you should consider how much you spend writing code, browsing the internet(s), etc... it may be wonderful to be able to run Duke Nukem Forever, Doom 3, and Quake 27 simultaneously, but how mush of your time does this REALLY consume?
I have to admit that I am kindof torn about this. I have an older Athlon chip that use to get QUITE hot (more recent heatsinks solved this). However, one of the things I use to prefer about Intel chips is that they'd stop working before they'd fry themselves. This may not seem important, but it is to me... I had an Athlon 1800XP that burnt out itself and the motherboard within 2 seconds of startup because the heatsink/fan were underrated for the job (despite it's claims to the contrary). Now I'm a little more willing to pay for something that will "step" itself down instead of dieing.
ok, this is, probably, a kinda silly question (given the context), but what kind of ice is it? is it frozen H20... otherwise, is it immediately useful to us?
Yes, I'll admit that this was funny, but why would you mod it so? It was equally (if not more so) insightfull. By modding it as 'funny' you've actually deprived the OP of total karma. I wish more/. mods would realize that +1 FUNNY actually detracts from total Karma.
The FCC doesn't have any say, what-so-ever, over this. You could start a company tomorrow making cards that'll transmit on any frequency and even if they don't like it there's nothing they can do. Now, that being said, if I were to purchase one of your cards and start illegally broadcasting on restricted frequencies then they're free to nail my ass to the wall because I have then broken the law.
If you don't believe me then how about this... anyone (in the United States, at least) can buy a ham radio that'll broadcast on all types of frequencies that the general public isn't allowed to use. And yes... there are "computer controlled" ones.
I really hate seing people use this excuse to protect the companies when it really has no merit.
I completely agree with this. One could also, easily, make the argument that he took your code when he forked the project. I'd even be willing to wager that he's taken a lot more of yours than you've taken of his. Maybe pointing this out might help put out some flames (probably not).
I'm trying to figure out who's making these things. Search google for "Balance" and "laptop" and about all you come up with is things saying "hey... walmart has sub-$500 computers." I'm really wanting some specifics on the specs (eg. as far as I can tell the $50 more one has a parallel port, but no serial... the cheaper doesn't mention either). The "specs" listed for the cheaper one are almost ALL talking about the OS/software. It's like they're trying to convince everyone that they really are ok to use. Also, there's only one pic of it so I can't even self-diagnose.
Ommited from your list: the $549 one has gigabit ethernet where as the other doesn't even mention ethernet.
Viruses are exclusive (almost) to Windows because it's possible for them to spread. Linux enforces user permissions so (unless you, stupidly, run as root) there's not too much havok the can wreck. Sure you may loose the stuff in your home directory (~) or other files you own, but that's not that big of a problem (most viruses try and damage systems, not files). Viruses also, traditionally speaking, make use of security holes, or other such things. If these don't exist then there's no real threat.
Antivirus software IS useless under Linux. There are no (to my knowelege) viruses for the platform, so there's nothing to detect. The only advantage I can see to there being scanning software is to clean up Windows partitions. As soon as the first Linux virus manifests then it will make sense to have it, but if there's nothing to detect then why have software to detect "it".
To touch on your cross-platform email virus. I don't know about you, but what mail clients do you know of that automatically run code from email attachments? Not only that, but they'd also have to recognize the format and call up the interpreter for that specific format. I know, for a fact, that none of the email clients I've ever used (at all... under any platform), save Outlook, DO execute untrusted code. Your version of a cross-platform virus would have to be built in either a scripting language (which can even be quite powerful. eg Python) or an interpreted language (eg Java or.Net). Name one (for any platform) email client that will recognize an attachment as Java, locate the executable, and automate the execution of the untrusted code. Also, just for good measure, name one cross-platform virus (doesn't have to be email-borne) of ANY type.
Either you don't know enough about the subject matter or your logic is that "you never know... someone might be able to figure out how to code a virus for a system that's proven resistant." That's kind of like wearing a little white surgical mask all the time because "you never know... them terrorists might figure out how to dust my city with anthrax." Possibility does not equal probability.
According to their website(www.spybot.info) it requires Windows. Even if it DID run on Linux what would be the point? Name one spyware app that's Linux based. It'd be kinda like a virus scanner... useless.
Why are you attacking me? I don't write the fucking laws. However your flaimbait comment could be argued. With all of those services some peice of information is being conveyed, or, communicated. It doesn't have to be a two-way conversation for communication to take place.
In the US it was a crime long before the terrorist drabble cropped up. It is illegal to "make a phone call without intent to communicate". I think this one was written specifically for wardialers.
Funny you should say that. I'm actually using stolen internet (open access point) right now. 'The Man' could tell every ISP in the nation not permit you access, but there are ways around everything.
so, if I want to play some of EA's stupid sports games I can do it on the go now. sigh... when will they learn that Nintendo is the market lkeader (despite inferior systems) because they have good games?
yeah... when I first glanced over this I read it as if it was current. I was thinking "wow, someoene figured out how to reconstruct, from photographs, what the city would have looked like. This is amazing". Then I RTFA and felt like an ass.
Slashdot - Where we promise the news will be from the last century (if only slightly).
no see... you're missing the point. this one is "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and the old one was "Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory". they're obviously totally different
so... I have to go to a website, download/install a plugin, then (presumably) click a few more times to get it set up for "one click". I'm fialing to see how this is useful.

note: I did not RTFA
There is quite a difference between the two... :)
:)
albeit only slight
I'm not saying that karma is worth caring about but, the fact remains that needlessly diluting someone's karma pool *DOES* do 'damage'.

sigh... this was in Wired two months ago.

You are wrong in so many ways.

good question... you also have to take into account local laws too though

I'm laughing... if I had mod points (and hadn't already talked here) I'd give em up

read this somewhere last night... type "george bush is a" and look at the results. quite amusing
I'm having the opposite effect. It seems like everyone I know is on (and they all want to talk, sigh).
I think you just admitted to being in drama club. You can turn your badge in at the door.
