ok... I'm sorry if I'm missing something here. with the utter prevailance of acronyms these days I have a hard time keeping up. this is a new one. what is this "TV"? how do you pronounce it (guess: teee veee)?
Maybe it's because the old domains never die. These god awful search sites and other squatters just buy them all up. I use to own the domain name jeremylogan.com (my name), since I let it die two different domain squatters have bought it up as soon as it was available. I'm really beginning to think we ought to have to justify our domain names in some fashion.
If you need a little help being convinced just check out http://manpage.com/ and tell me THAT URL couldn't be put to some real use.
yeah, but these are the same people who say our phone numbers should look like this: (###)###-#### that's just ugly. ###.###.#### is so much nicer.
note that I do, actually, agree on the date formatting
you know, this is spot on. a bunch of my geek friends and I actually have a poker night set up bi-weekly. we play for very low stakes, but it's very enjoyable, good socialism, an excuse to drink in the middle of the week, and gives me something that requires that I think that isn't computers. I think a lot of other social games are probably good for geeks too. oh... you play on the internet... for real money... nevermind.
ok... to put it a little better:
for a lot of us it's hard enough to find a good first job. once we get that then I'm sure we will be in different spirits, but for now we tend to be a little bitter. to us a better question is "how can completely competant IT people prove that, despite our young age, we are quite adept at what we do. how do we hammer it into the HR people that 10+ years experience in a technology that's only existed for 5 is just ludicrous, not to mention unnecessary".
you people and your jobs make me sick. I'm out here running around all day trying to find a first job and you're complaining about not being able to wrangle a second?
You know, as of right now, yours is the only screenshot from a non-windows desktop. If this were anywhere but slashdot or any article but this one it wouldn't seem important.
guess I should be sorry YOU didn't have mod points today:)
it's a wonder that I don't have anything good to say until the story's already progressed off the main page and I'm horribly buried below hundreds of other posts... ah well, such is life
its free-as-in-beer... if you don't like it there are libraries out there... write your own
I did, in fact, say that it was free as-in-beer. By doing so I also accepted that it was not free as-in-speach or, as you put it, free as-in-freedom (dictionary.com -> "being free of restraints"). I will give you that much. BUT, and here in lies the key, I further followed up by recomending the poster that he write his own if he was unsatisfied with the curent state of affairs. In a sense, your attitude is more detrimental to the open-source (and/or free software) movement than mine. Your comment (insofar as how it relates to my own) basically says that you just expect it to be free, that you shouldn't have to input the effort. This is a bad thing. It borders on freeloadership (I'm pretty sure that isn't a word, but you catch my meaning). You shouldn't just expect a company to release their hard work (and money) GPL style. It would, in this case, present quite a number of problems (imagine forks... Flash.org v7.06.21beta... the less experienced of the world wouldn't know up from down). You should, however, be happy that they are supporting our platform. There are FAR too many companies that do not.
Now, in closing, I will admit that my comment was probably not well constructed to acurately present my meaning. I, in no way, intended that to come off as abrasive, argumentative, demeaning towards open-source or any such. I was just pointing out one of the truly great things about open source... if you don't like it, change it.
When I was 15 other teachers were pulling me out of class. You'd be surprised how long you can drag out a "plug it all the way into the outlet" sort of problem.
I live in Portland... it's the same here. The few responses I've gotten when I posted for jobs have all told me that they got a ton of qualified applicants. It may be getting better, but it's still not good enough where I can pick the job I want. I've just got to take what I can get.
What's really interesting is all the research into how to keep future generations out. It's presumed that they won't speak the same language and won't even know how to translate anymore. It's also assumed that none of the instutions or governments of today will still be around.
There was a report by Sandia National Laboratories titled "Expert Judgement on Markers to Deter Inadvertent Human Intrusion into the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant" that discussed this very thing. It's a terribly interesting read. Some of the best excerpts can be found here.
If you live in the United States your daughter is (probably) old enough to drive a car on her own. A car is A LOT more deadly than a.22 rifle is. If you're willing to surpivse her in the latter then please surpivise her in the former. I'm tired of being almost killed by kids who can't drive.
Disclaimer: I'm not some raving old man... Just 23.
Dell is already in the shopping malls. From ifoAppleStore: Dell Computer doesn't depend only upon its telephone and on-line sales: they have 81 kiosks within the hallways of shopping centers in 11 states. They're now running a billboard promotion with the tag line, "We're In The Mall."
so... why would someone in the United States (as Corell University is) quote prices in GB Pounds? Answer? They wouldn't... if you had read the real article (you know... the one that dpnow.com links to) you would have seen the following:
The proper way to perform these tests is to order both the ISO standard and a properly-made test chart. The latter are available, for example, from Sine Patterns LLC and Precision Optical Imaging, both in Rochester, New York. See the the I3A site for worldwide sources. Expect to pay more than $US100 for such a chart.
Did it occur to you that maybe the submitter based his facts on the source, not the hype?

my ex-girlfriend would like to argue with you there

you mean babies use those things too?
ah yes... maybe "good social interactions" or something similar.

ok... so the three screenshots that are visible to me right now (viewing at +4) are all from Windows boxes... sigh
ha ha... joke's on them. pennies barely have any copper in them at all.

I agree. A better link might have been this: X10 Protocol or Intro to X10
you know... I just moved to Portland myself. Maybe he can help me get my ethernet card working
