    No. Not at all.

    But let me mention this....

I just built a shiny new Athlon64 box with an nVidia chipset and nVidia graphics. WinXP installs fine. Then, I just load some drivers and everything works.

Now, if I wanted to install Linux, first I have to be paranoid about hosing my XP partition (oops). Second, if I want to use the nVidia drivers (which nVidia actually provides, bravo!), then all I have to do is RECOMPILE THE KERNEL! This is not a process that I wish to undertake, as I am not sure that I am competent enough to handle it. And I have been playing with Linux for a couple of years! I use Unix every day at work, and I am very comfortable around a command line. So I have had my new machine for a month, and have had Knoppix as the only Linux on it (which does not recognize the integrated gigabit ethernet port, so no web browsing for me).

So, it is possible to get all of my hardware working under linux? Yes. But, it is possible for ME to do this comfortably? No. Therein lies the difference.

Happiness lies in being content with what you have. Very few women can compare to the air-brushed beauties in magazines. And the ones that DO look like playboy models are not likely to hang out with your average slashdot geek. So, if you let the magazines and videos dictate what your sense of beauty is, you find that your real love live is not quite up to the ones in the videos. The, you get dissatisfied. Then, you cheat. Then, you get caught. Then, you pay $2000/month in alimony + child support. Then you wind up alone at the gas station of love and use the self-service pump because the playboy models are not attracted to guys who drive Yugos because they pay too much alimony.

The rest of the PC mags are focused on Linux and think that Billy G. is the son of satan. I suspect that the truth is somewhere between the two extremes.

What I want is something in the middle. I would like an impartial review of PC stuff. And if it is hardware, would it hurt soooo much to throw in a sentance or two about Linux compatibility? Can I use that shiny new scanner under SANE using Mandrake? And when discussing options for office software, I would like to think that OpenOffice should at least deserve a mention. Look at it this way .. Once the drivers are done, it probably does not cost more than a buck to add this to each card. There are not even any connectors to add to the parts list -- just a card edge conector. So if the card has this feature and you never use it, no great loss.

On the other hand, if you HAVE to get this kind of performance, at least you have an option now. Expensive, but if they sell even 1000 extra cards, it is probably worth it. So, I would expect this sort of feature to become standard from now on.

Then again... There is always the posibility that next year, instead of ubergamer buying a new nVidia 8000 Ultra Pro Deluxe SE, they will just buy another of the card that they already have (which will be cheaper by then, possibly only $200). This will eat into the sales of the high-end cards.

    Who knows what will happen?

My opinion is that this will be a hard sell. The problem is that almost all games (except some in the adventure genre) are based on conflict. Almost all games involve either shooting (FPS) or battle/conquest (RTS). If you want to go completely safe for everybody, then the games are not likely to be too fun.

There have been some games which break the usual genre system, but those are generally experimental, and as such is a risk for the publisher.

The best that you can do is shoot for no wait for a certain percentage of the time (usually between 70-99%). Because it is possible every customer might call at exactly the same time (but it is extremely unlikely), you have to have one rep for each customer. This is an extreme example, but this is the sort of thing that you have do deal with in probabilities.

    75% no-wait service is cheap.
90% no-wait service is a little more expensive
