  2. Re:"Fake news" or "Opinions I disagree with?" on Americans Don't Think the Platforms Are Doing Enough To Fight Fake News (poynter.org) · · Score: 1

News doesn't have to be fake to be biased. News organizations show their bias by what they choose to report or ignore. They also show their bias by harping on one story that fits their narrative (agenda) day after day after day, while ignoring more important news.

They also make mistakes, ALL of them. I think sometimes they're in too big a rush to get a story out. I've seen stories on all the news networks that had to be retracted because they had only one source and that one source was wrong. Back in the glory days of printed newspapers, nothing went to print without being verified by at least two sources. With news networks going 24/7/365 they don't always wait that long. Verification takes time they don't have.

All of them should make it clear which of their shows are opinion and which are real news. I believe most people can tell the difference, but there are still a lot of stupid people out there. Some of them post here!

  5. You know damned well the government knows it. Google is part of the government . . . you could call it a "non-governmental organization" if you wish. 8. We still have them where I live. I think it's the best way to vote.

Walk in, get verified, mark ballot by filling in the ovals, feed ballot into machine, machine scans and counts, and the paper ballots are there in case you need a recount. Why don't all polling places use this method?

The only thing you need then is voter ID, and we have that here. Every polling place should.

If voters can't trust that the election was fair and honest, there's no reason for anybody to vote.

  13. We've dumbed-down the last few generations enough. Let's turn that around and get back to actually teaching them the three Rs.

Education isn't rocket surgery. We know how to do it because we've done it before. Discipline, less political correctness, real grading, and no Common Core would be a nice start.

This was just in the news: "Of the more than 1,000 people surveyed in May and June of this year, only one person was able to name all five First Amendment rights. A whopping 40 percent, however, couldn't name any." THAT'S the result of doing it wrong. Fix it before trying something new and unproven.

  14. There's a lot of truth in what you say. I'm 65 and I've been in about three dozen real fights in my life, most of them before I was 25. I've been knocked out a couple of times and also knocked out the other guy a couple of times. I came way too close to killing a guy in college with my bare hands. That was my last fight because I realized the damage I could do to another human being. Nowadays I wouldn't fight if you paid me, and I've learned that revenge is safer and more satisfying.

Remember, when us "old" people were young, there was no protection from bullies. It was either learn to defend yourself or suffer the consequences. You learned fast.

Google Maps shows a town about a mile from where I live. Click on the name and no information about the town shows up. Nobody has ever heard of it and few people live within that area. The area is actually part of the city I live in, so it can't be a city or town of its own. Maybe Google found the name in an old history book where there may have been a community by that name a hundred or more years ago.

That's not the only case. I see it repeated all over the state. These are not "dead towns". I'm familiar with dead towns. I have a book that lists every dead town in the state. They may be old communities that Google "thinks" are towns.
